You can connect to your Zeppelin Air three differentways: Using AirPlay . Using the front mounted iPod dock. Using the rear panel mounted connection sockets.Diagram 2 illustrates the Zeppelin Air rear panelconnection sockets.AirPlay ConnectionZeppelin Air is able to play audio from iTunes eitherwirelessly or via a wired (Ethernet) connection usingAirPlay streaming technology. When connected tothe same network as a computer running iTunes,Zeppelin Air can appear as an output option in thepop-up AirPlay menu. See Section 5 for informationon configuring Zeppelin Air to join your homenetwork and on configuring iTunes to play throughZeppelin Air.Auxiliary InputIf you wish to listen to an external analogue ordigital audio source, connect it to the Zeppelin AirAux input socket using either an analogue cableterminated with a mini-jack plug or a digital cableterminated with a mini-TosLink optical plug. ZeppelinAir will automatically identify the type of cable usedand configure the Aux input socket appropriately.Note: Zeppelin Air is able to play stereo digitalaudio at up to 24 bit/96kHz resolution. It is notcompatible with surround-sound encoded 5.1channel digital audio.Video OutputZeppelin Air incorporates a composite video outputphono socket that enables video on a docked iPodor iPhone to be sent to a TV or computer monitorwith a suitable input. ENGLISH3. Using Zeppelin AirZeppelin Air can be operated either from the controlson its body, illustrated in Diagram 3, or from theremote control. If the remote control is to be used,the battery insulating tab must first be removed. Thisis illustrated in Diagram 4. Diagram 5 illustrates theremote control key functions.Only applicable whenAirPlay has been set up.3.1 Switching On and OffIn addition to normal operating mode, Zeppelin Airhas both Standby and Sleep modes. In Standbymode, all Zeppelin Air functions are switched off andthe power consumption minimised. In Sleep mode,the Zeppelin Air wireless function remains connectedto the network. The Zeppelin Air indicator illuminatesdim red in Sleep mode and will turn off in Standbymode.Zeppelin Air can be switched from Standby mode bythe following actions: Pressing the Zeppelin Air Standby button Docking an iPod or iPhone.Zeppelin Air can be switched from Sleep mode bythe following actions: Diagram 3Zeppelin Air controls explainedPressing the Zeppelin Air Standby button .Pressing remote control Standby key .Docking an iPod or iPhone.Streaming music to Zeppelin Air by Airplay.Play music through the AUX input.When Zeppelin Air is switched on from Standbyor Sleep, the last input used will be selected if it isstill connected. If the last input used is no longerconnected, Zeppelin Air will automatically scan itsinputs AUX, Dock, USB, AirPlay, and select the firstconnected one it finds. The Zeppelin Air indicator willchange to the colour that designates the selectedinput. If AirPlay has been set up and no connectedinput is found, Zeppelin Air will select the AirPlayinput by default. If AirPlay has not been set upZeppelin Air will enter Sleep mode.Note: For first time power up when AirPlay hasnot been set up the indicator will flash Yellow.Note: The table in Section 4 describes allthe Zeppelin Air indicator colours and theirmeanings.To switch Zeppelin Air into Sleep mode, either pressthe remote control Standby key or press and holdthe Zeppelin Air Standby button for 2 seconds. Diagram 6 illustrates Zeppelin Air's audio and videoconnectivity.With the Zeppelin Air switched on from Standbyor Sleep: You can listen to your iPod or iPhone audio. Y ou can output iPod or iPhone video to a TV ormonitor, with audio on the Zeppelin Air. Y ou can connect to a wired or wireless networkand listen to your iTunes audio via AirPlay. Y ou can listen to other digital or analogue audiosources via the Zeppelin Air AUX input. Y ou can listen to audio stored or streamed on yourcomputer via USB.Note: See Section 6 for more on using theZeppelin Air USB input. Y ou can use the remote control Volume keys or theZeppelin Air Volume buttons to control volume.3.4 Zeppelin Air Automatic InputSwitchingENGLISH3.2 Zeppelin Air FunctionsIn some circumstances the Zeppelin Air willautomatically switch to its AirPlay input or switch onfrom Sleep mode: I f iTunes streamed audio is present on the AirPlayinput when the dock input is selected and adocked iPod or iPhone stops playing, the AirPlayinput will automatically be selected. I f iTunes streamed audio is present on the AirPlayinput when the USB or AUX input is selected, theAirPlay input will automatically be selected. I f iTunes streamed audio is present on the AirPlayinput when Zeppelin Air is in Sleep mode, it willautomatically switch on and play the streamedaudio. W hen Zeppelin Air has been In Sleep modefor more than one minute and an audio signalis detected through the AUX input, it willautomatically switch on and play the AUX inputaudio. I f an iPod or iPhone is docked, or Zeppelin Air isconnected to iTunes via AirPlay, you can use theremote control Play/Pause key to play or pauseaudio, or the Next and Previous keys to select thenext or previous track. Y ou can use the remote control Input key or theZeppelin Air Standby button sequentially to selectconnected inputs.Note: There is a short delay when Zeppelin Airinputs are switched. This is a consequence ofthe need to re-establish USB, Network or iPodcommunication.3.3 Adjusting the Zeppelin Air soundA Zeppelin Air used close to a wall or near a roomcorner may overemphasise the bass elements ofmusic played on it. You can reduce the bass byfollowing the steps below. W ith the Zeppelin Air switched on from Standby,dock an iPod or iPhone and play some music.While the music is playing, select the iPod oriPhone Settings icon.MENU S croll to the bottom of the Settings page andselect Speakers. T he default Zeppelin Air setting is Bass 0. Thisis appropriate for a Zeppelin Air used away fromwalls and corners. Bass -1 reduces the bassoutput appropriately for a Zeppelin Air used withits back close to a wall. Bass -2 reduces the bassoutput appropriately for a Zeppelin Air used neara room corner. Bass 1 and Bass -3 options arealso provided to enable personal preferences alsoto be accommodated. You should select whicheveroption you feel sounds best on a range of music.The bass adjustment happens as soon as youhighlight the option. T he selected bass adjustment is retained by theZeppelin Air once the docked iPod or iPhone isremoved and is applied to all the Zeppelin Airinputs.Note: When you use Zeppelin Air with AirPlayor a docked iPod or iPhone it is best to switchoff any equalisation. Select the “flat” equalisationoption.Diagram 6Zeppelin Air connectivity6

The Zeppelin Air indicator illuminates in a range ofcolours to indicate different operational conditions.Table 1 describes the colours and their meanings.5. Joining Wireless Networks andconfiguring iTunesIn order to play your iTunes music on your ZeppelinAir using AirPlay, your Zeppelin Air must join thesame network as the computer on which iTunesis installed and running. Zeppelin Air networkaddressing is set to DHCP which means that once ithas joined the wireless network it will not require anyfurther configuration. You will need to know yourhome wireless network name and password(also known as wireless key) before you start.5.1 Set up your Zeppelin Air with your iOSdevice (iPod touch, iPad or iPhone) Get ‘Bowers & Wilkins Control’ App from theApp Store or by visiting www.bowers-wilkins.com/control Follow the onscreen instructions.5.2 Set up with Mac or PC Get ‘Bowers & Wilkins Control’ App from theApp Store or by visiting www.bowers-wilkins.com/control S elect your home network Name from thedrop down list and enter the Password in theappropriate box. Take care to type the passwordcorrectly.ENGLISH4. The Zeppelin Air Indicator W hen you are finished, click on the Apply button,then close the Zeppelin Air setup page. Disconnectthe Ethernet cable. T he Zeppelin Air indicator will change to steadypurple when the wireless network connection isestablished. This will take up to 3 minutes.Note: If Zeppelin Air fails to connect to yourhome wireless network, the most likely fault isan incorrectly entered network password. Followthe reset instructions in Section 8 and begin thenetwork setup procedure again.5.4 Configuring iTunesWith Zeppelin Air connected to your home network(wired or wireless) you can configure iTunes to use itas an output device. Select Zeppelin Air as an outputoption in the pop-up AirPlay menu.iTunes will now play through the Zeppelin Air.Multiple Zeppelin Air units can be connected tothe wireless network and used to provide audioin separate rooms. Each will be available in theiTunes devices menu, identified by either the namesspecified in the setup page, or by default the lastthree digits of their serial numbers. Follow the onscreen instructions.5.3 Setting up Zeppelin Air using a wiredconnectionTo set up Zeppelin Air to join your wireless networkyou should first connect it physically to the Mac/PCusing an Ethernet cable. You will need to ensure thatyour Mac/PC wireless capabilities are disabled. Onceconnected you can browse to the Zeppelin Air setuppage. Follow the steps described below.Note: Zeppelin Air can also use a wired networkfor AirPlay streaming. U nplug every cable from the Zeppelin Air andundock any docked iPod or iPhone. U sing an Ethernet cable connect the ZeppelinAir rear panel Ethernet socket to an Ethernetsocket on the computer. C onnect the power cable. Zeppelin Air will switchon with the indicator pulsing red. O nce the Zeppelin Air indicator begins to flashyellow. Press and hold the ' ' volume button onZeppelin Air for 4 seconds. Zeppelin Air's indicatorwill show solid purple once the wired networkconnection is established. U sing an internet browser application runningon the computer connected to the Zeppelin Airtype the Zeppelin Air default network address(http://169.254.1.1) in the browser address fieldand press “return”. This will open the Zeppelin Airsetup page. The setup page provides the option to change theZeppelin Air name. Changing the name is usefulif more than one Zeppelin Air is to be connectedto the network. Zeppelin Air Firmware UpdateThe USB input enables you to connect your ZeppelinAir to a Mac/PC in order to play stored or streamedaudio, or to synchronise data held on your Mac/PCwith your iPod or iPhone.Updated Zeppelin Air firmware may from time to timebe made available for download from Zeppelin Air'ssupport section of the Bowers & Wilkins website.6.1 Playing Audio via USBWhen Zeppelin Air is connected to a Mac/PC viaUSB and its USB input is selected, the computer willidentify Zeppelin Air as an output only audio device.Specifying Zeppelin Air in the Mac/PC audio controlpanel will allow it to play audio data either storedlocally on the computer or streamed via a network orthe internet. The Zeppelin Air indicator will illuminategreen when the USB input is selected.Note: The table in Section 4 describes allthe Zeppelin Air indicator colours and theirmeanings.Depending on the Mac/PC audio application in use,the remote control may be used to control playback,skip tracks and adjust volume.6.2 Data Synchronisation via USBWhen Zeppelin Air is connected to a Mac/PC viaUSB it can be used as an iTunes synchronisationdock to synchronise data stored on the computerwith data stored on the iPod or iPhone.To function as a synchronisation dock, the ZeppelinAir must first be switched into Sleep mode Once inSleep mode, pressing and holding the Vol buttonfor two seconds switches the Zeppelin Air intoSynchronisation mode (entry into synchronisationmode is not possible from the remote control). Insynchronisation mode, a docked iPod or iPhone willbe linked directly to the Mac/PC via USB so thatiTunes can be used to manage data synchronisation.The Zeppelin Air indicator will illuminate yellow insynchronisation mode.ENGLISH6. Using the Zeppelin Air USB Input8. Zeppelin Air Factory ResetZeppelin Air has a pin-hole reset button locatedon its rear connection panel. The reset button isillustrated in Diagram 7. To return Zeppelin Air'ssettings (AirPlay input) to the factory defaults, ensurethe power cable is connected, and power theZeppelin Air on. Press and hold the reset button for2 seconds. The indicator will flash red twice.9. Cleaning Zeppelin AirUse a clothes brush or damp cloth to clean thegrille cloth. Wipe other surfaces with a clean lint-freecloth. If you wish to use a cleaning agent, applyit onto the cleaning cloth, not directly onto theZeppelin Air. Test a small area first, as some cleaningproducts may damage some of the surfaces. Avoidproducts that are abrasive, or contain acid, alkali oranti-bacterial agents.10. TroubleshootingIf you need help troubleshooting a specific problem,or have a question you’d like answered, pleaseconsult our Troubleshooting guide, or FrequentlyAsked Questions section on the Zeppelin Air ProductSupport page of our website.www.bowers-wilkins.com/supportNote: If no iPhone or iPod is docked or no Mac/PC is connected, Zeppelin Air will not entersynchronisation mode.When synchronisation is complete, synchronisationmode can be cancelled either by un-docking theiPod or iPhone or pressing and holding the ZeppelinAir Vol button for 4 seconds. It is good practicealways to “eject” iPod and iPhone models fromiTunes before physically disconnecting the USBconnection.
