Plumbing SystemsThe SharkBite connection system offers the only total rough-in solution, including a full line of valves, pushto-connect fittings, PEX pipe and traditional PEX components and tools. The SharkBite system offers threeoptions for a PEX pipe installation – Trunk & Branch, Manifold or a Combination system – as described in thediagrams below. The Trunk and Branch SystemMaking a SharkBiteConnection The combination of SharkBite push-to-connect fittings and PEX pipe offers the fastest, easiest installationfrom meter to fixture. The Manifold SystemFixtureStep 1Use pipe cutters to cut the pipe between the pointed ends of therepeating 1 inch SharkBite imprint pattern. The pattern providesa visual aid to determine if the pipe has been inserted all theway into the fitting. Ensure the pipe is cut square to allow it to beinserted all the way into the fitting.FixtureSharkBiteDrop Ear ElbowSharkBiteDrop Ear ElbowTub/ShowerSharkBiteAngle StopSharkBiteAngle Stop1/2" SharkBitePEX PipeSharkBiteEB35 RegulatorSharkBiteEB35 RegulatorFixture3/4" Copper Pipe3/4" Copper Pipe3/4" Copper PipeSharkBitePush-fittingsThe Combination SystemFixtureSharkBiteAngle StopStep 2Ensure the support liner inside the fitting is in place. The linerreinforces the wall of the PEX pipe to help prevent collapse of thepipe wall.SharkBite Manifold(Barb or Push-fit)This system uses traditional PEX components(manifolds, barbed fittings, clamp rings, etc.) andoffers the total lowest material cost. When youneed special configuration fittings, such as drop earelbows, SharkBite push-fittings offer greater speedand efficiency than traditional barbed fittings whilecosting about the same.Step 3Insert the pipe into the fitting until the pipe reaches the pipe stop.Make sure the pointed end of the SharkBite pattern is even withthe end of the release collar. Only when the pipe reaches the pipestop has a secure joint been created. The Home-Run SystemSharkBite Drop Ear ElbowFixtureEnsure the pipe has no rough edges, cuts or abrasions, which candamage the o-ring and cause the fitting to leak.1/2" SharkBitePEX Pipe1/2" SharkBitePEX PipeThis system uses SharkBite PEX pipe and pushfittings. One dedicatedplumbing line is run to each fixture/appliance forboth hot and cold supply lines.Step 4Place the SharkBite disconnect clip around the pipe with thenon-branded face against the release collar. If using the SharkBitedisconnect tongs, place the teeth around the fitting assembly. The fork end with the SharkBite brand logo should be positionedaround the pipe and the other end around the neck of the fitting.Push the clip against the release collar and pull the pipe witha twisting action to release the pipe. If using the SharkBitedisconnect tongs, squeeze the tool with one hand and pull thepipe with a twisting action to release the pipe.DisconnectTongCheck the fitting and pipe end for damage. The fitting and pipeshould be free of damage, foreign objects and marks on theoutside diameter. If the pipe is damaged or marked, then cut anduse a new section of pipe.Note: Install SharkBite fittings at least 1 inch apart to enable disassembly of the joint.3Tel: 1-800-321-0316 Fax: 760-744-0507sharkbite.com4

Making a SharkBiteClamp/Barb ConnectionCalibration of the SharkBiteClamp ToolThe use of traditional PEX components (manifolds, barbed fittings, clamp or crimp rings, etc.) offers the totallowest material cost.Check Calibration of the Clamp Tool Step 1Always check the clamp tool with the calibration gauge before you begin installations and after performingthe last crimp.Use pipe cutters to make a square cut of the pipe to length. A roughor uneven cut can result in a weakened joint.Step 2Slide the appropriate clamp ring size over the pipe to about2 inches from the end of the pipe.Step 1Step 2Close the clamp tool handles tothe stop point and insert gaugeinto jaw gap.Gauge must stop at the NOGO line in order to make properconnections.Calibrating the Clamp ToolIf the gauge goes into the jaws beyond the GO portion, the clamp tool should be recalibrated using thefollowing steps.Step 3Push the pipe onto the barbed fitting until it touches the fittingshoulder. Position the clamp ring 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the end of thepipe. This distance ensures that the clamp ring is positioned directlyover the barbs on the fitting.Step 4Position the open jaws of the clamp tool over the raised tabs of theclamp ring and squeeze. One clamp tool fits all size clamp rings. It can be operated with onehand, leaving the other hand free to hold the clamp ring in position. The tool cannot be removed until the clamp ring is fully compressed.A properly calibrated clamp tool eliminates the need to check eachfitting ring with a go/no-go gauge.Step 5Verify the connection is secure by visually checking theclamp tab.5Tel: 1-800-321-0316 Fax: 760-744-0507Step 1Step 2Step 3Place GO portion of gage intojaw gap.Loosen locking nut.Adjust clamp tool jaws by rotatingthe eccentric stud counterclockwise until jaws contact gauge.Re-tighten the locking nut.Warning: Tools out of calibration may not make good long-termconnections and can result in leaks developing over time.Removal of Clamp or Complete ConnectionPlace a flat-bladed screw driver under the clamp tab and pry up to unlock. Then, using a clamp removal toolor pliers, grab onto the tab and pull free.Note: The previously clampedsection of SharkBite PEX pipeshould be cut off before making anew connection.sharkbite.com6

You may damage the pipe.Do not use with natural gas, propane, fuel oil or anyother fluid, chemical or product. SharkBite PEXpipe (non-oxygen barrier) is for use with potablewater only and is not approved or intended for anyother use.Do not freeze. SharkBite pipe is freeze resistant, but not freezeproof. Pipe embedded in concretethat is subjected to freezing conditions will likelydamage both the concrete and the pipe. Pipe thatis frozen and not embedded may damage joints ormanifolds. Be sure to carefully pressure test, inspectand repair systems that have been subjected to afreeze before returning them to normal operation.Do not pressure test with water in freezingconditions.Do not store or install where pipe will be exposed todirect or indirect ultraviolet light (i.e. sunlight).Do not expose the pipe to direct flame. Do notinstall pipe near extreme heat.Do not use in excessive operating conditionsinconsistent with pressure ratings that appear onpipe and applicable standards.Do not subject pipe to prolonged exposure to freechlorine concentrations greater than 4 ppm.Do not use in contaminated soils.Do not expose to materials that affect the basicproperties of cross-linked PEX, brass or copper.Avoid contact with adhesives.Do not use with other fitting systems.Do not install through metal studs or concretewithout using a protective sleeve.Do not install pipe that has defects such as: gouges, cuts, deep scratches, kinks, evidence of grease, taror any chemical, exposure fading or discoloration.y Do not use SharkBite brass or poly crimp fittingsyyyyyyyywith stainless steel clamps when using PE-RT pipein ambient temperature conditions of 32F or less.If using SharkBite brass or poly crimp fittings withPE-RT pipe when conditions are 32F or less, coppercrimp rings should be used.Do not use defective fittings with the pipe.Do not use supports that may collapse or cut thepipe. Supports should not have sharp edges, whichcould damage the pipe.Do not use metal hangers with sharp or abrasiveedges or hangers that may pinch or penetratethe pipe. Proper hangers, clamps and straps areavailable from your SharkBite supplier.Do not pull pipe tight at connections. Preventunnecessary strain on the pipe, fittings andconnections with straps or clamps.Do not drag the pipe over rough terrain, rocks or anyother surface that could abrade, cut, puncture ordamage the pipe wall in any way.Do not crush or kink the pipe.Do not heat kinked pipe to repair/reform. Inspectall pipe before and after installation. Damaged orkinked sections should be cut out and replaced.Keep the PEX pipe a minimum of 12 inchesvertically and 6 inches horizontally from sources ofhigh heat such as recessed light fixtures, gas fluevents, heating appliances or electric motors. Forcedair heating ducts are not generally consideredsources of high heat. These areas of installationshould be rechecked after further construction andother mechanical systems have been installed. PEXcan be run in return air plenums. Bend pipe 2 inchesaway from fitting. This prevents the fitting frombeing used as an anchor point.Do not exceed the minimum bend radius of thepipe. Proper Support ofSharkBite PEX PipeTechnical Data forSharkBite PEXSharkBite PEX must be properly supported to protect against excessive strain. For both vertical and horizontalapplications we recommend the pipe be supported every 32 inches between supports, leaving a little slack(1/8-1/4 inch) in the pipe to allow for normal expansion and contraction. Always use approved PEX supports, and never use a support that has sharp edges.Certifications TypicalapprovedPEX support.32"Pressure Loss DataThe SharkBite PEX pipe is design certified to ASTMF-876, F-877, CSA B137.5 standards and is listed tothe NSF/ANSI 14 and CSA B137.5 standards for use inpotable water systems. The SharkBite PEX pipe can be submerged in concrete, but we recommend following these guidelines toensure a long-lasting, maintenance-free installation.y Protect the pipe with non-metallic sleeves whenentering or exiting the concrete slab. A largerdiameter piece of SharkBite PEX also works well inthis application.y Do not allow joints within the slab. Use acontinuous length of SharkBite PEX within theslab and be sure to check for leaks before pouringconcrete.Cross-Linking MethodsCross-linking is a process that changes the chemicalstructure of high density polyethylene used to makePEX pipe so that the polymer chains are connectedto each other in a three-dimensional net by chemicalbonds. PEX A, B, C and D are terms used to describethe different manufacturing methods used toproduce PEX pipe.Regardless of which manufacturing method isused, all PEX pipe meets the same standards forcommercial and residential plumbing applications.Classification of Cross-linked PolyethyleneTypologyMethodSymbolA ChemicalPeroxide cross linkingPEX-aB ChemicalSilane cross linkingPEX-bC PhysicalRadiation cross linking (beta)PEX-cD ChemicalAzocomponets cross .6405.0100.9580.284Example:ΔT 10 F L 100’ Δ L 3Expansion/Contraction Loop 24.6307.2811228.8108.514160 psi @ 73.4 F (23 C)100 psi @ 180 F (80 C)80 psi @ 200 F (93 C)Thermal ExpansionSince SharkBite PEX pipe will expand and contractduring temperature changes, please allow slack whenrunning the pipe through the building.
