HOW MUSIC CHANGES LIVES“I always love the empowerment music provides asmusic is for everyone. It creates a sense of belongingto a group and that is powerful.”Music has a powerful influence on our lives. From thepatriotism brought on by the playing of “The Star-SpangledBanner” to the emotional ballad playing during your firstschool dance, music makes an impact. For one of WakeCounty Public School Systems’ music teachers, music is atool for growth and empowerment.Matt DiDonna, Band Director at Rolesville Middle School, has taught students the power of music for over ten years. His musical journey began in fourth grade where he wasasked to perform with the fifth graders because of hisimpressive drum roll. His passion for music solidified at 12years old when his father unveiled an old drum set he usedin high school.Page 14“On the day he unveiled them there was no happiertwelve-year-old on the planet,” said DiDonna.Studying at Rowen University under some very influentialprofessors Matt was transformed into an educator. As aneducator DiDonna taught over four years as a middle schoolchoral teacher in New Jersey, another four-and-a-half yearsas an elementary general music teacher in North Carolina, leading to his current position.“I always love the empowerment music provides as musicis for everyone. It creates a sense of belonging to a group and that is powerful. To give kids that opportunity to be apart of something that powerful is something I don’t takelightly,” DiDonna shared.Summershine 2018 Fall Edition

DiDonna encourages parents to involve students in musicas it instills practical skills of collaboration, problem-solving,and dedication that have real-world value. He furtheradvises starting the musical training early to make thetransition from elementary to middle school band smoother.Music education can begin as early as fourth grade. Checkyour assigned school to ensure they have a program orconsider enrolling your child in local music lessons. The registration process for band varies by school.Typically, a student will need to purchase or rent aninstrument of choice, but some schools have loanerinstruments for students to use. Parents and students areprovided with a list of retailers in the area to aid in theprocess. When choosing an instrument consider weighingthe pros and cons of each. Is the instrument portable? Whatis the difficulty level in playing the instrument? Is it used inmultiple musical styles? All good questions to weigh youroptions. As your child progresses from elementary to middle andhigh school band the courses and extracurricular optionsincrease. Students gain confidence in performing to largergroups and venues. They gain a social circle of sharedinterests and support. They are a part of a community. At Wake County Public School System, DiDonna is one ofthe hundreds of band teachers making a difference in ourstudents’ lives every day. Consider engaging your child in aschool band and watch the positive lifelong effects develop.Say you saw it here, and receive possible discount or incentive. Participating advertisers ONLY.Page 15

SPROUT SCOUTS—LEARNINGTHE VALUE OF FOODWorking in conjunction with BackPack Buddies,Bugg Magnet Elementary School’s Sprout Scoutsaims weekly to fill 50 backpacks with food to helpfamilies in need have meals over the weekend.School-aged children are often unaware of how and wheretheir food is originated. The concept of their daily foodcoming from somewhere other than the grocery storeis foreign to many children. Sprout Scouts is working tochange that understanding through a partnership withBugg Magnet Elementary School, Wake County PublicSchool System, Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, and corporatedonors.Sprout Scouts is a national program focused on givingstudents hands-on activities related to growing, preparing, and eating healthy foods. Students are assigned group andtake-home activities that link Common Core and academicstandards. The group activities not only encourage socialPage 18interaction among the children but reinforce the importanceof community involvement. The take-home activitiesoffer parents the opportunity to engage in meaningfuldiscussions related to food and health.Schools are encouraged to conduct Sprout Scouts as aclub-based activity.
