His arrival at the end oftime will be proof of His victory over sin and death. The natural life processes of the fig tree are aguide to the events leading to the Son of Man’s return.424 St. Boniface 11/15/2015

In a rare departure from my now familiar retirementroutine, I took a total of five airline flights to andfrom my nephew’s wedding in sunny California thispast Labor Day weekend. Considering the funfilled but hectic-paced events of the weekend, thepre-dawn start of the last three flights home washardly welcome. The whole adventure lost a lot ofits charm as that day progressed, because it involved a seat change; a temporarily lost wallet anda late night hunt in the near deserted airport forluggage that had been sent ahead on an earlierflight without my knowledge. So much for passenger comfort by the almighty airlines! One of the requirements of such travel is payingclose attention to the ubiquitous flight informationboards. They quickly make obsolete most of thepreviously printed information on one’s boardingpass, as airport gates and departure times changewith the touch of an unseen keyboard. All of this I offer as prelude to reflections on theReadings that come our way at Mass for these lastweeks of the Liturgical year each November. Howthey coincide with the shorter days, cooler nightsand the falling leaves that are all part of the eleventh month! These Scriptures remind us that whatseems to go on indefinitely will end when we leastexpect it. I refer not only to our small personal allotment of years in this earth, but also to the macromatter of the end of the whole cosmos. That Jesus is on His way back according to a timetable only the Trinity knows is a fact. He told us so.The truth is trumpeted especially by our Third Eucharistic Prayer whenever it is prayed. So, if you’ll pardon the use of the airline patois thatrecently became so familiar to me: “Are you prepared for departure?” Are your carry-on bags, hopefully packed with good deeds added to eachday, ready “to be safely stowed in the overheadcompartments? Is your personal bag of prayers“able to fit fully under the seat in front of you?”Those seem to me to be the only ways to be spiritually “prepared for takeoff, with your seat belt securely fastened.”Meantime, it is always a good idea to let the allknowing “Pilot” up in the cockpit be the one tochart the course for your “final destination.” Otherwise the flight could be cancelled.Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson“Count Your Blessings!”I am appealing to all the parishioners of St.Boniface and St. Mary’s to support a fund raiserfor improvement and repair to the walkways ofour church.“Count Your Blessings” raffle will be drawn onDecember 20, 2015.
