MAKE A DIFFERENCEFUNDRAISE FORCENTENARY centenaryinstitute/centenaryinst

Thank you for choosing tofundraise for Centenary InstituteAt the CentenaryInstitute we believethat everybody hasthe right to be ableto live a healthier, longer life than thegenerations beforethem. Medicalresearch is the besthope we have tomake that possible. We are one of the leadingindependent Medical ResearchInstitutes in Australia with ourstrengths lying in understandingdiseases and applying thisto patient treatments. Ourability to be world leaders inour field comes from 30 yearsof creativity, innovation andexcellence in discoveringimproved diagnostics, treatments, and cures in cancer, inflammatory and cardiovasculardiseases. It’s a sad reality that they affectus all in some way. Most peoplehave a family member of friendwho has had to face the battle.Nicole is a cancer survivor whounderstands the importance ofthe lifesaving research we do.“I was one of the truly luckyones. My melanoma wasvery advanced any chance ofsurviving was only 5%.When I was diagnosed withmelanoma I felt like I’d driftedinto a scary movie and I wasgiven the starring role. But I hadtwo young boys and a husbandwho all needed me, so I wasdetermined not to be a victim ofcancer. Research is so vital.Without it my boys wouldn’thave their mother.” Nicole, melanoma survivorMore than 10,000 Australiansare treated for melanomaeach year, but tragically over1,500 of them won’t make it.

About our researchers“Just like everyone else, I want toleave the earth in a slightly betterstate than it was when I enteredit.” Dr Thomas Tu, Liver andCancer“I want to be able to give patientsand families the answers that willhelp them understand the lossof a loved one.” Dr Jodie InglesMolecular Cardiology“What keeps me coming towork everyday is the constantchallenge and the feeling that Ican make a difference. Scienceis hard and unpredictable;nevertheless, with all theknowledge we gain, we can savelives and relieve suffering.“Seeing patients in the clinicand not being able to give themanswers to their questions drivesme as a researcher. Losing ayoung healthy family membersuddenly has a devastatingimpact on the family andcommunity. My job is to look for new waysof detecting liver cancer earlier, which would improve survivalrates dramatically. It is one ofthe few cancers becoming morefrequent in developed countries. It is a disease that hits afterthe age of 40 years, right whenpeople have responsibilities andpeople depending on them. Evenworse, it often sneaks up anddevelops without any symptomsuntil it is well advanced.Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathycan show no prior symptomsand is the commonest structuralcause of sudden death in thoseaged less than 35 years old.Ultimately, we hope our researchwill give us the answers andsave precious young lives.”Even with state-of-the-arttreatments, patients have a 15%chance of surviving 5 years postdiagnosis, a harrowing statistic.”www.centenary.org.auWithout the support of ourcommunity fundraisers, ourresearchers would not be ableto continue to work towardsnew diagnostic approachesand prevention of cardiacdeath that affects up to 1 in500 young Australians orearly detection of liver cancerthat affects 1 million peopleevery year./centenaryinstitute/centenaryinst

Why support from thecommunity is so important to usThe statistics are alarmingaround the number ofAustralians that are affectedby the diseases we applyour knowledge to and try tounderstand. To give you anidea of why your support isneeded: 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3women will be diagnosedwith cancer by the age of 85 more than 2 millionAustralians are living withasthma 3.5 million people areaffected by heart, stroke orvascular diseasesWithout the support of ourcommunity fundraisers, we wouldnot be able to undretake theextensive range of research thatwe do and make major medicalresearch breakthroughs. Ourdiscoveries will not only benefitfuture generations of Australians, but those across the globe.CANCERINFLAMMATIONCARDIOVASCULAR
