LECO Rockwell Hardness TesterGeneral ProceduresPart 1: Adjusting Settings1. Switch on the power supply located on the rear of the machine.2. Select and attach appropriate indenter tip and anvil.a. Changing the indenteri. When attaching an indenter, first loosen the thumbscrew.1
ii.Insert the indenter with the tip facing down and flat sidefacing the thumbscrew.iii. Lightly tighten the thumbscrew until it is screwed all theway iniv. Rotate the indenter 90 counter-clockwiseb. Changing the anvili. Remove the unwanted anvil by lifting it upii. Insert desired anvil and lightly press down into place3. Select R (rockwell) or S (surface) by rotating the minor load selectorknob4. Select the measurement mode by pressing the “D/B” buttonIndenter TypeModeDiamondHRCBallHRB2
5. Press the AUTO button (a green light should light up above the “Auto”near the display)6. Set the test load by using the knob on the right side of the machine7. Set the dwell time. Units are in seconds and recommended setting is 2seca. Press DW TIME button (LDT should be displayed on the screen)b. Adjust it with the INC (increase) and DEC (decrease) buttonsc. Then press SETPart 2: Evaluating the calibration1. Collect the appropriate standarda. Ensure the standard is within the load range and the correct modei. Range and mode of the standard can be found on/inside thebox and etched on the side2. Place the standard on the anvil3. Press the RESET button to ensure the machine has been zeroed4. Rotate the elevating handle clockwise until it is close to the indenter tip.3
5. Locate an area of the standard that is free of indentationsa. General Rule of thumb is to find a spot that is 2.5 times the widthof the indention away from the nearest indention and/or edge6. Then SLOWLY keep rotating the elevating handle. You will observe thethe minor load RED LEDs lighting up. Keep going until the GREEN LEDabove the SET indicator on.a. In the case that you exceed the set load, a red LED will be turnedon above the OVER indicator and you will have to redo themeasurement on another spot.7. Machine will automatically take the measurements. Allow a few secondsfor the result to be displayed.a. In the case that it does not do it on its own, go back and make sureit is on the AUTO setting8. Conduct 2 to 3 indents to allow for seating9. Then conduct and record 3 indents. Then take the average of the resultsand compare to the standard’s known hardness valuesa. Measurements should be within the allowed range of the standardb. If the results are not within the allowed range, double check if youare using the appropriate settings, indentor, and anvil. In the casethat the problem persists then contact the lab manager.Part 3: Measurements1. Place the specimen on the anvil2. Rotate the elevating handle clockwise until it is close to the indenter tip.3. Locate an area of the sample that is free of indentations4. Then SLOWLY keep rotating the elevating handle. You will observe thethe minor load RED LEDs lighting up. Keep going until the GREEN LEDabove the SET indicator on.a. In the case that you exceed the set load, a red LED will be turnedon above the OVER indicator and you will have to redo themeasurement on another spot.5. Machine will automatically take the measurements. Allow a few secondsfor the result to be displayed.4
a. In the case that it does not do it on its own, go back and make sureit is on the AUTO setting6. Conduct 2 to 3 indents to allow for seating7. Then conduct your measurements.a. Recommended you conduct at least 3 measurementsBest Practices Make sure the specimen, anvil, and indenter tip are clean and stable. Before conducting any measurements make sure the reading of themachine is 0.0. If it is not press the RESET button to zero the machine. Do not overtighten the thumbscrew. It should be tight enough to hold itin place but loose enough to allow for the indenter to be removedwithout loosening. Never allow for the screw cover and anvil to make contact. Ensure the indenter is not damaged or chipped Use the Regular Rockwell Scales Chart shown on pg 65

ANSI A300 defines as a tree risk assess-ment: “A systematic process used to identify, analyze, and evaluate risk.” “Mitigation” is a term that I see com-monly used inappropriately. In the Standard, it is very clearly defined as the process of diminishing risk. We do not eliminate risk in trees when we perform some form of mitigation practice. We are minimizing the risk to some .
