Application Guide1.Heating Control with Danfoss Link & Connect ThermostatsIntroduction1.1 SegmentThis application guide covers the use of Danfoss Link , Danfoss Link Connect Thermostat wirelessheating controls and Danfoss Eco in 1 and 2 family houses and flats up to 300 m2.1.2 Danfoss Eco programmableradiator thermostatDanfoss Eco is a stand-alone intelligent and programmable radiator thermostat*for residential use, where a central control system is not availableIt is easy to install and is supplied with adapters for all thermostatic valves manufactured by Danfoss and most other radiator valve manufacturers.1.3 Overview of unitsin a Danfoss Link systemThe following units can be used in a Danfoss Link wireless system:Danfoss Link RS Room Sensoris used for measuring and adjusting the room temperature. Danfoss Link HC Hydronic Controllerallows control of hydronic floor heating witha large range of functions. 21,5 Danfoss Link Connect Thermostat is an electronic radiatorthermostat* for residential use, which is controlled by a DanfossLink CC. Danfoss Link CC CentralController is the unit, from whichthe entire installation can becontrolled. One Danfoss Link CCis always needed in a system. Danfoss Link BR Boiler Relayis a unit for turning gas and oilboilers ON/OFF, depending onheating demand.Danfoss Link FT Floor Thermostat is used for measuring andadjusting electrical floor heating.Danfoss Link RU RepeaterUnit is used for extending thewireless transmission rangebetween Danfoss Link CC andother units in a system.* Danfoss recommends using Connect and Eco Thermostats together with Danfoss radiator valves withintegrated pre-setting in order to achieve optimal performance. For choise of adaptor please use the Danfoss adaptor guide, which also includes adaptors for non Danfossvalves.VAIDD402 Danfoss07/20163

Application Guide1.4 Number of units in aDanfoss Link system1.5 Best practiceHeating Control with Danfoss Link & Connect ThermostatsWhen building a wireless Danfoss Link control system it is important to follow these rules:1. The total number of units must not exceed 50 (1 Danfoss Link Central Controller 49 units).2. The number of each type of unit must not exceed:Danfoss Link CC . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 unitConnect Thermostat . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 30 unitsDanfoss Link HC . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 unitsDanfoss Link RS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 30 unitsDanfoss Link FT . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 30 unitsDanfoss Link BR . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 unitDanfoss Link RU . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 unitsMains powered unitsAvoid disconnecting mains powered units ina Danfoss Link system. In the event this happens the system will eventually re-establish thenetwork, when repeater unit is reconnected tothe mains power.230 VDanfoss Link RUDanfoss Link RU Repeater unitsIt is always recommended to use Danfoss Link RU, when a repeater is needed to extend the radiocommunication range. Several mains powered units (such as relays) also act as repeaters, but withlimited capability to improve the communication range compared to Danfoss Link RU.Danfoss Link RU repeaters should always be registered as the first 230 V units in the system.4VAIDD402 Danfoss07/2016

Application GuideHeating Control with Danfoss Link & Connect ThermostatsDanfoss Link RS Room SensorThe Danfoss Link RS is designed to measure theroom temperature and control the Connect Thermostats to reach the set room temperature. The Danfoss Link RS is useful in all applicationswhere the actual temperature at the ConnectThermostat is significantly different from the desired room temperature., or if you have multipleradiators in the same room.Do not install DanfossLink RS on outer walls orwhere it will be subject todirect sunlight.Best performance of the system with ConnectThermostats and Danfoss Link RS is achieved,if the RS is not too far from the radiator, bestbetween 1 and 5 meters. The installation heightshould typically bebetween 80-150 cm.Make sure to select the proper settings for theConnect Thermostat and Danfoss Link RS onDanfoss Link CC. Choose the “covered radiator”option if the radiator is behind a fixed radiatorcover and possibly if the radiator and ConnectThermostat is covered by heavy furniture. In wet rooms DanfossLink RS shall be installedaccording to local buildingregulations. At least 50 cm away fromwindows/doors that willbe left open occasionally.VAIDD402 Danfoss07/20165

Application Guide2.Heating Control with Danfoss Link & Connect ThermostatsGeneral Guidelines2.1 Heat supplyIf the heating system has been optimized for constant set temperature around the clock, you mayneed to adjust the settings when working with setback periods. When changing the temperaturefrom a low economy setting to a comfort temperature, the system must be able to supply enoughheat to raise the room temperature at least 1 C per hour to perform well. Compared to a steadytemperature the heating system must typically be able to supply 25% more heat, but only for ashort period of time during heat up.BOOSTENERGYECONOMYCOMFORTHow to achieve 25% extra capacity in a system that should run boost:LimitationsActionMax. ΔP and temperature reached:Increase valve presettingMax. temperature and preset reached:Increase pump pressureMax. preset and ΔP reached:Increase water temperatureNote: Maximum acceptable presetting, water temperature and pump differential pressure settings aredifferent from system to system and depend on the application. For radiator valves with pre-setting, balance the systemto allow for enough flow. The supply line temperature at the radiator valves should beabove 40 C to ensure optimal control.Make sure that the supply water temperature and flow isadequate to provide enough energy.Increase the temperature or the pump level, if necessary.6VAIDD402 Danfoss07/2016min.40 C

Application Guide2.2 FunctionsHeating Control with Danfoss Link & Connect ThermostatsConnect Thermostats have a built-in function, which automatically shut off the heat while the room is ventilated. When thethermostat detects a drop in room temperature, it closes thevalve. To prevent excessive cooling of the room, the thermostat willautomatically open the valve again after 30 minutes, meaningthat during longer periods of ventilation you must manuallyset the temperature down.To prevent multiple detections of ventilation, e.g. caused byopening a door, leading to instability, the thermostat will notdetect a new ventilation session in a period of 45 minutes fromthe previous occurrence.Be aware that a large window sill might prevent the ConnectThermostat from detecting cold air from an open window, andthereby not activate the automatic Open-window function. If the radiator is under or oversized in relation to the room, thesettings should be changed accordingly.Connect Thermostat: to change the settings, please refer tothe Connect Thermostat installation and user guide.VAIDD402 Danfoss07/20167

Application GuideHeating Control with Danfoss Link & Connect ThermostatsThe adaptive learning function (Forecast) ensures that the comfort temperature is reached at settime. The warm up time is continuously adjusted according to seasonal temperature changes. Adaptive learning ensures the wanted temperature at the wanted time (here 20 C at 07:00). Adaptive learning uses data from the previous 7 days to be able to reach the correct temperatureat the right time. Adaptive learning is sensitive to large, rapid temperature changes.129123966Winter: Long warm up time.2.3 RoomsSpring/fall: Short warm up time.Covering the radiator - e.g. with furniture, curtains or a radiator cover - might cause heat to beaccumulated around the thermostat.Light curtain/furniture: Connect Thermostat: canbe used, but function isimproved by using a RSroom sensor. Danfoss Eco : can be used, but it might be necessary toraise the set temperature.Medium curtain/furniture: Connect Thermostat: usewith Danfoss Link RS roomsensor. Danfoss Eco : can be used, but it might be necessary toraise the set temperature. If two radiators are placed within 40 cm of each other, the heatemission from one radiator can affect the thermostat on theother radiator. Connect Thermostat: use with Danfoss Link RS roomsensor. Danfoss Eco : balance the two radiators by adjusting the settemperature on the affected radiator.83VAIDD402 Danfoss07/2016Radiator cover: Connect Thermostat: usewith Danfoss Link RS roomsensor. Danfoss Eco : not recommended in this situation.

Application GuideHeating Control with Danfoss Link & Connect ThermostatsDirect heat radiation from large radiators maydisturb the Connect Thermostats ability tomeasure the room temperature correctly. To avoid this, mount the thermostat pointingaway from the radiator. The optimal solution is a Connect Thermostatwith a Danfoss Link RS room sensor.Danfoss do not recommend to use an angle adapter, instead the valve should be turned or replaced.A fireplace in the room can affect the adaptive learningfunction of the Connecct Thermostat and disturb the heatingcontrol. If you use your fireplace regularly it is recommended todeactivate the adaptive learning.By deactivating the adaptive learning function, Connect willwork as a traditional thermostat, but with a delay in heating upthe room after the fire has burned out.Note: If the valve has been closed for a longer period there may bea delay in heating up the room.Sunlight from large windows in the room can affect theadaptive learning function of the Connect Thermostat anddisturb the heating control. Then it is recommended todeactivate the adaptive learning.By deactivating the adaptive learning function, Connect willwork as a traditional thermostat, but with a delay in heating upthe room after the heating from the sunlight has stopped.Continuous draft from a leaky window or garden door directlyon the Connect Thermostat will disturb the heating control. Connect Thermostat: use with Danfoss Link RS roomsensor. Danfoss Eco : We do not recommend using Danfoss Eco ininstallations where temperature measurement at thethermostat is not representative of the room temperature. In an installation with frequent draft, the regulation maybecome instable and lead to fluctuating temperature andreduced battery life.VAIDD402 Danfoss07/20169

Application GuideHeating Control with Danfoss Link & Connect ThermostatsConnect Thermostats are primarily designed to be used withsupply valves. But Connect Thermostats can also be used with return valveson small radiators (smaller than 120 cm diagonally, rule ofthumb). On larger radiators with return valves Connect Thermostats arenot recommended.Neither Connect Thermostat nor Danfoss Eco should be usedon convectors placed in floor trenches.10VAIDD402 Danfoss07/2016m.ax120cm
