Areas of SheffieldCity CentreThe University is not a closedcampus and is located within thecity. Being so close to the centreyou can easily meet up withfriends after lectures, and takeadvantage of all the shops, cafes,restaurants and bars on offer.Although the centre is quite small,Sheffield’s suburbs spread out over avery large area, and these have kepttheir own individual character.Ecclesall RoadEcclesall Road is a thriving local area, and thereis a fantastic mix of independent and highstreet stores. Restaurants, cafes, art galleriesand boutiques share the tree-lined streets andEcclesall has some of Sheffield’s very best greenspaces with the Botanical Gardens and EndcliffePark nearby. The large student population createsa cosmopolitan atmosphere and the parks host agreat range of special events including circuses,fairs and open air concerts.6The city centre is compact, easy towalk around, and has good pedestrianareas. There are plenty of nationalchain stores as well as independentshops, and a large, inexpensive indoormarket area that is open every dayexcept Sunday.

RanmoorBroomhillRanmoor is one of the most desirable suburbsin Sheffield. It’s close to the city centre butretains its own peaceful and tranquil setting.Mature tree-lined streets, large gardens andgrand properties present an affluent andtimeless atmosphere. Considerable numbersof students live close by in Universityaccommodation and it is conveniently placedfor public transport, walking to campus andthe local shops in Broomhill.Broomhill is a busy shopping and residentialarea popular with students, and is very closeto campus, University accommodation andthe city centre. It has an interesting mix ofshops, cafes and bars and is only a shortwalk away from the Botanical Gardens. Thearea is well served by frequent buses to theUniversity and city centre, which is only onemile away.CrookesCrookes is another popular area for studentswith streets lined with Victorian andEdwardian properties. The main shoppingstreet is home to a good selection of foodshops and supermarkets, fast food outletsand general stores. Crookes is very close tothe University and the city centre so gettingaround is easy, and it is only a short walkaway from two public parks.7

Living in SheffieldWeatherThe British weather can be unpredictable.Summers can be hot and winters very coldwith occasional snowfall. You can also expectfrequent and sometimes heavy rain so beprepared for these changes in climate. Youwill need cool clothing for the hot days andwaterproof, warm layers for the cold days.You will need suitable footwear too for thewet and icy roads in winter.ClothingThe average British student tends to dresscasually at home, when out socialising andwhile at the University. There will be timeswhen smarter clothing is needed, so bringa choice. Traditional dress and clothing forreligious or cultural reasons are of coursewelcome here.SmokingSmoking is prohibited in all enclosed publicspaces, places of work and Universityaccommodation. It is usual to ask “Do youmind if I smoke?” if you are socialising withother people, but do not be offended if youare asked not to.8

ReligionThe UK is a multicultural society;people from ethnic minorities live inmost areas and are a well-acceptedand well-integrated part of thepopulation.Exploring life in Sheffield does notmean having to give up your ownculture or religion. Sheffield has alarge ethnic population and there aremany people practicing various faiths.The number of people from differentcultures has grown alongside thefacilities that allow them to lead a lifeaccording to their religious beliefs.Places of worship in Sheffield includelocal churches and chapels, mosques,Hindu and Buddhist temples and asynagogue.You can get in touch with people fromall faith groups through our MultiFaith Chaplaincy ge andcommunicationEach region of the UK has its ownaccent and dialect and Sheffield is noexception. This may be quite differentfrom the English you have learnt inyour own country. Don’t be afraid toask people to repeat or speak moreslowly and don’t be offended if Britishpeople ask the same of you.Sheffield people are proud of theirfriendly nature and visitors mayfind this most noticeable in theaffectionate terms such as “Love”,“Duck” or “Darling” used in everydayconversation.

FoodAs you would expect from such a large,multicultural city there is a wide range ofinternational cuisine on offer. Only minutesfrom campus you will find food from allover the world. Vegetarians are always wellcatered for and halal food is widely available.The University offers plenty of choice oncampus and in our accommodation. Therewill be lots of opportunities to sampletraditional British food as well as the manyinternational options on offer too. We caterfor different religious and ethical needs,provide halal and vegetarian options, andsupport students during Ramadan. We usefresh, local produce and are recognisedas a Fairtrade University.Catered accommodation is a great way tobudget and ideal if you don’t like to cook.You can find more information about thistype of accommodation on p38. If you haveany specific dietary requirements, speak toa member of the University’s catering teamwho will be able to provide assistance bothon campus and in our accommodation.10

Cafes and barsThere are many cafes in and around the city,with plenty of choice near campus and thestudent residential areas. The Universityhas a good range on campus and in ouraccommodation which are open throughoutthe day and are very popular with bothstudents and staff.Bars and pubs are an important part ofBritish culture, particularly with youngerpeople and students. Sheffield has a largevariety that cater for all tastes, many ofwhich serve relatively inexpensive food aswell as hot drinks. There are several bars oncampus that are always busy, and these alsoprovide a range of activities, concerts andevents throughout the year.In the UK it is quite acceptable for womento use bars, pubs and restaurants withoutmale companions, and there is no pressureon anyone to drink alcohol. Soft drinks arealways available for you to order.There’s something for everytaste here in Sheffield, fromMichelin star award-winningrestaurants, to cafes ideal forthe student budget.11

ShoppingShopping for essentialsWe advise you not to purchase any booksor stationery until you arrive. All stationeryis available cheaply in the Students’ Unionshop. Sheffield has many good bookshopsand it is possible to buy standard texts andother teaching material second-hand,either from charity shops or from otherstudents; look out for advertisements onyour departmental noticeboard.FoodSupermarkets are everywhere, in andaround the city and close to campus andour accommodation. Some of these areopen 24 hours. Castle Market offers pricesthat are usually lower than high streetshops or supermarkets and the bus or thetram (from the University area) will takeyou there. You will need to take a bag tocarry your purchases home as they are notusually provided, and remember, the stallsoffering the best value attract the mostcustomers, so be prepared to wait.There is a good range of halal, kosher andinternational food providers, ng/dietEconomy shoppingThe city centre shopping area is good forbuying food, clothes and household goodsand there are many discount departmentstores. These are very useful for buyingbedding and other household items if youare on a budget.Second-hand clothes shops and charityshops such as Oxfam, Help the Aged andSave the Children are close by and can beuseful, and there are often second-handclothes and shoes on sale during theStudents’ Union market days.The main student shopping areas for dailyneeds are in the Broomhill, Crookes,Hunters Bar and London Road areas andthese are all close to campus and ouraccommodation. The shops are generallyopen between 9.00am and 5.30pm everyday except Sunday.12

MeadowhallA tram ride away from the University isMeadowhall. Most of the major shopsare represented here and there areplenty of restaurants, cafes and fast foodoutlets to choose from. It also has itsown multi-screen cinema complex.13Whatever your budget,Sheffield has everythingfor the keen shopper –from malls to markets,chain store favourites todesigner labels. The citycentre has well knownhigh street stores andplenty of independentshops, and Meadowhall,one of Europe’s largestshopping malls, is a tenminute tram ride fromthe city centre.

Cultural SheffieldCinemas and theatresThree distinctive venues form one of themost important theatre complexes inthe UK.The Crucible, Studio and Lyceum alloverlook Tudor Square in Sheffield’s citycentre and present a lively mixture ofthe classics, contemporary drama andfamily musicals.Sheffield City Hall, also in the city centre,is a large imposing landmark and is afamous venue for holding both popularand classical music concerts, as well astheatrical productions.14As you would expect in a major UK city,Sheffield has a number of cinemas tochoose from. From the largestindependent cinema outside of London,The Showroom, to the popular multiscreen venues which show all the latestHollywood blockbusters.The Film Unit is the University’s own400-seat cinema located on campus andwe also have our own University DramaStudio, which stages a wide variety ofdrama, dance, opera and musicproductions throughout the year.

Galleries and museumsSheffield is home to several important galleriesand museums. The Millennium Gallery has closelinks with the Tate and the V&A in London, and theGraves gallery has a permanent collection ofmodern art. Here you can see works by Picasso,Lautrec, and Hockney amongst others. It is alsoworth looking out for any future temporaryexhibitions, as recently these have featured Dali,Goya, Blake and Warhol. Weston Park museumhas a series of temporary exhibitions alongsidepermanent features such as Arctic World,Sheffield Life and Times, and What on Earth,where you can come face to face with a T-rex. It’sfree and a great place to take children.www.museums-sheffield.org.ukThe Site Gallery specialises in photography, film,video and new media from around the world andis one of the UK’s leaders in exhibitingcontemporary art. The S1 Artspace is a young,artist-led organisation and has the most artists’studios outside of London. Music and festivalsBeing home to many influential bands andartists such as Pulp, The Human League andArctic Monkeys, we have numerous venuesacross the city where it is possible to see ahuge variety of music.Sheffield has a continual calendar of events,concerts, festivals and fairs throughout theyear. Here is just a small selection of what youcan expect:TramlinesSheffield’s parks, pubs and public spacesbecome one big music venue for theweekend. It is hugely popular and was votedthe Best Metropolitan Festival 2011.Festival of the MindThis is a unique collaboration between theUniversity and the city’s creative community.The Festival of the Mind is a chance to seeyour lecturers putting on events with localartists, poets, musicians and magicians.Sheffield is one of the leadingcultural centres in the UK andhas always been proud of itspopular music scene.Doc/festAn international film festival in the heart ofthe city. Expect back-to-back screenings andtalks by influential documentary filmmakers.Off the ShelfFor those who love reading. Off the Shelfattracts well-known literary names, and thereare readings, workshops talks and authorsignings held throughout October.Sheffield Food FestivalThis is a free festival for all those interested infood and cooking, with pop-up restaurants,local food markets and professional cookeryclasses.Peace in the ParkAnything goes at this extravaganza and it isalways popular with students. There is livemusic and DJ tents, cabarets and stalls as wellas plenty of food and drink.SensoriaThe UK’s festival of film and music celebratesSheffield’s rich musical heritage. Parks and peaksWeston ParkWeston Park is next door to campus, and our libraryoverlooks its grounds. It is a popular place withstudents and the general public when the weatheris good.Botanical GardensClose to our student accommodation at The EndcliffeVillage is the Botanical Gardens. The gardens were firstopened in 1836 and are a very nice place for a walk atany time of year. They are made up of 15 differentgarden areas and are home to a large variety of plants,and some of the earliest glass pavilions constructed.Endcliffe ParkEndcliffe Park is five minutes walk away from ouraccommodation and is a great place to meet up withfriends and take a stroll.Winter GardenIn the city centre, the Winter Garden is the largesttemperate glasshouse in any European city and is hometo more than 2,000 plants. The building is anarchitectural spectacle in itself and is located next tothe Millennium Gallery.Peak DistrictThe Peak District National Park is so close that you canbe there by bus in 20 minutes. This is dramaticcountryside covering 555 square miles and attracts anestimated 22 million visitors every year. ChatsworthHouse, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, isone of the UK’s most popular stately homes and it isdefinitely worth a visit.There are around 50 publicparks, gardens and speciallydesigned public areas,many of which are close tocampus and the city centre.19

SportSheffield is the UK’s firstNational City of Sport.Facilities include an Olympicsized swimming pool, golfcourses, sports arenas andan ice rink.Most sportsfacilities can beused on a pay asyou use basis.There’s plenty to watch too.We have two football teams – SheffieldUnited and Sheffield Wednesday who playfrom August through to May every year.Our rugby, ice hockey and basketball teamscompete at national levels and the WorldSnooker Championships are held at TheCrucible every year.If you like climbing, cycling or walking inthe countryside, the stunning Peak DistrictNational Park provides the perfect setting.Closer to home, we have many public parkswhich are ideal if you want to go runningor jogging, and every year Sheffield hoststhe Great Yorkshire Run and its own halfmarathon.Sport Sheffieldwww.sport-sheffield.comWhether you want to have fun, keep healthy,develop skills or socialise, Sport Sheffield canhelp. By getting involved in Sport Sheffield, atany level, you will be part of one of the largestcommunities on campus.No other sports facility, leisure centre or gymcan provide you with the range of services onyour doorstep. Our main site, Goodwin SportsCentre, is located between student residentialareas and the main campus.Sport Sheffield offers a wide range of facilitiesincluding; five floodlit synthetic pitches; alarge fitness centre with over 170 piecesof equipment (refurbished in 2012), a largeswimming pool with sauna and steam rooms;sports hall; a fitness studio; multipurposeactivity rooms; four squash courts, abouldering wall and 45 acres of grass playingfields for rugby, football and cricket.20

Our sports facilities have accessibility forstudents with disabilities. There are specificchanging rooms and dedicated parking spacesas well as a poolside hoist which allows accessto the swimming pool. Induction loops are in allreception areas and activity rooms to assistcustomers who wear hearing aids.If you live in our University accommodation youcan get involved in a variety of sports everyFriday, and it’s all free of charge. This includesfootball, basketball, badminton, bouldering,squash, table tennis, swimming, circuits,self-defence classes and much more.S10health Fitness CentreTake part in the programme of group fitnessclasses and improve your knowledge aboutpersonal wellbeing through planned sessionsand activities.
