To emphasize the importance of the arts for Alabamastudents, the Alabama Course of Study: Arts Educationprovides rigorous standards for all students in Grades K-12.This document reflects national standards, providing for thedevelopment of skills in each discipline with an underlyingappreciation for the significance of the arts across societiesand cultures.Students today are bombarded with images, sounds, and textas they navigate our increasingly digital society. This dailyimmersion in multiple art forms demands that students thinkand learn in new ways as they create, interpret, explore,negotiate, and make meaning from diverse sources ofinformation and communication. National trends towardpreparing students for college and career provide untoldopportunities for students to find work in traditional andcreative industries, capitalizing on the 21st Centuryknowledge and skills imparted through the arts.Developed by educators as well as business and communityleaders, the Alabama Course of Study: Arts Educationprovides a solid foundation on which local boards of educationcan build comprehensive, sequential, and developmentallyappropriate arts education programs that contain bothtraditional and innovative components. PREFACEThe Alabama Course of Study: Arts Education provides the framework for the K-12 arts educationprogram in Alabama’s public schools. Content standards are provided for five arts disciplines—dance,media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts. These standards are minimum and required (Code of Alabama,1975, §16-35-4).
