animal ScienceAgriculture Science and Technology- 1 unitThe Agricultural Science and Technology course is designed to teach essential concepts and understandingrelated to plant and animal life including biotechnology, the conservation of natural resources, and theimpact of agriculture and natural resource utilization on the environment. Emphasis is placed on the roleof agriculture in our society and the importance of agriculture to the welfare of the world. Basic personaland community leadership and safety, and agricultural mechanical technology are included as a part ofthe instructional program. Each student is expected to design and participate in a supervised agriculturalexperience.Typical learning activities include hands-on learning experiences including performing basic principles ofplant, soil, and animal science; studying and modeling the significance of humankind’s interrelationshipwith soil, water, and air; participating in FFA activities.This course is a prerequisite for all other Horticulture and Animal Science courses.Animal Science-1 unitThe Animal Science course is designed to provide an overview of the animal science industry. Itprovides information on the biological make-up of various species of agricultural livestock. It alsoprovides students with information on animal behavior that would be beneficial before embarking on acareer in Animal Science.This course is prerequisite for Small Animal Care and Introduction to Veterinary Science.Small Animal Care-1 unitPrerequisites: Agriculture Science & Technology and Animal ScienceThe Small Animal Care course is designed to teach technical knowledge and skills for occupations in thepet industry or the companion animal industry. Skills also relate to the veterinarian or the veterinariantechnician career field. Typical instructional activities include hands-on experiences with cats, dogs,rabbits, fish, etc. participating in personal and community leadership development activities; andplanning a relevant school to work transition experience.Introduction to Veterinary Science-1 unitPrerequisites: Animal Science and Small Animal CareIn this advanced animal science course, students will explore the field of veterinary medicine. Studentswill study the role of a veterinarian and veterinary technician in the diagnosis and treatment of animaldiseases. Topics to be discussed include: veterinary terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathology,genetics, handling and restraint, and physical examinations along with common surgical skills. Studentswill engage in a variety of laboratory activities and will participate in shadowing and/or other school-towork experiences.9

Upon successful completion of the programstandards, the student will be prepared for postsecondary education and entry-level automotivecollision repair-related careers. Automotive TechnologyTransportation, Distribution, and LogisticsStudents in Automotive Technology enjoy working with their hands, whether they are getting dirtyworking on automotive drivetrain systems, suspension and brake systems, or completing electricalsystem repairs. Technology and creative thinking skills are used by students to diagnose today’scomplex automobile. Building constructionArchitecture and ConstructionThis course focuses on skills in blueprint reading, foundations, layouts, framing, finishedcarpentry, and cabinetmaking. Students will learn the use of materials and methods used byresidential and commercial builders of the upstate. This course is endorsed by the CherokeeCounty Home Builder’s Association. Students mastering competencies may be eligible forcooperative work. The objectives of the cares are to enhance technology andcommunication skills; solve business –oriented problems; manage processes and procedures oforganizations; and demonstrate effective supervisory, management and human relations skills.Entrepreneurship-1 unitThis course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop an effectivebusiness plan for small business ownership. An important part of the course will be the incorporation ofeconomics, ethics, legal aspects, logistics, research, staffing, strategies for financing, and technology.Social Media in Business-1 unitThis course introduces students to the current field of social media and prepares them to explore andcreate successful social media strategies for businesses. It gives students the knowledge, tools, andmethods to use different social media tools and networks in a business environment such as blogs, videoand photo sharing sites, and other digital communication platforms.14

CosmetologyHuman ServicesThe Cosmetology Program is designed to prepare students to qualify and successfully complete allrequirements for a South Carolina Cosmetology license. Students receive training that follows theguidelines and regulations established by the South Carolina Labor, Licensing, and RegulationCosmetology Board. The course of study includes Sanitation and Safety, Professionalism and SalonManagement, Sciences of Cosmetology, Professional Hair Care Skills, Professional Nail Care Skills,Professional Skin Care Skills, and Unassigned Specific Needs. Fire Management servicesIntroduction to Law and Public Safety- 1 unitThis course provides basic career information in public safety including corrections, emergency and firemanagement, security and protection, law enforcement, and legal services. Additionally, students willdevelop a personal plan for a career in public safety. The course includes skills in each are of LawEnforcement Services and Fire Fighter and the community to help deliver instruction to the students.This course is recommended but not required for Fire Fighter 1.Fire Fighter 1 (2 units -one unit each semester)This course is designed to teach entry level requirements of firefighting and EMS and will cover NFPA(National Fire Protection Association) standards 1152 and 1153. These standards are requirements tobe a firefighter in South Carolina. Students will participate in many hands-on drills using actualfirefighting/EMS equipment in addition to classroom instruction. Students will be required to wearpersonal protective equipment and participate in physically demanding exercises.Fire Fighter 2 (2 units -one unit each semester)This course is a continuation of Fire Fighter 1 that will focus on more advanced firefighting and EMStechniques using classroom instruction and hands-on drills. Students will learn strategic planningmethods and operations that are applied in the fire service. Students will have the opportunity to earnFirefighter 1 Certification. This certification includes: First Aid CPR, Haz-Mat Awareness, Haz-MatOperations, Auto Extrication, and Firefighter 1. Students will be required to wear personal protectiveequipment and participate in physically demanding exercises. Students will be prepared to enter co-opexperiences and work at local Fire Departments upon completion of standards and requirements.Students who successfully complete Fire Fighter 1 & 2 will have the opportunity to earn Firefighter 1 &2 Certification from the SC Fire Academy.19
