Understand and summarize the trends in crime in the United States. Discuss the tension between public safety and civil liberties and the role that thecriminal justice system plays in these opposing and important goals. Analyze major issues related to the administration of justice in the United States for example, plea-bargaining, police misconduct, and punishment of offenders. Evaluate various models of criminal justice and consider the impact that each has onthose employed in the criminal justice system and the individuals who areprocessed through the system. Grading PolicyA student’s final grade will be based upon the point breakdown below. Pleasecheck the “grades” page often to keep track of your current class grade. If you think anerror in your grade has been made, let me know ASAP. Errors need to be brought to myattention within two weeks of submitting the assignment or receiving any other typeof grade.1. Unit Exams: We will have 4 unit exams. However, I will drop your lowest examscore (i.e., your top 3 scores will count). If students are satisfied with their first 3unit exam scores, then they do not have to complete the last exam. Exam questions canpotentially take on any form (e.g., multiple choice, true/false, short answer, essay, fill inthe blank, etc.). An exam takes place online, and it will be timed and students mustsubmit their exam within the allotted time period. Students must take the exam on theday that it is given. As a result of the lowest exam being dropped, no make-up examswill be given. Please note that exam questions can be related to any material assigned(e.g., even textbook material that is not extensively covered in class).2. Online Quizzes: To help you study for exams (and earn easy points), there will be 5online quizzes for the semester. Each quiz will be worth 20 points for a total of 100points. These quizzes will be taken out-of-class and completed on Blackboard. They willbe available Friday morning (09:00 am) to Sunday midnight (12:00 am) on Blackboard.Once the quiz is opened and started, students will have two (2) hours to complete thequiz. The quiz will be locked after submission and/or after the two (2) hour timeallotment runs out. Quizzes will consist of 20 multiple choice items, True/False, fill in2

the blanks question or short answer items (1 point each). Each quiz will be based onchapter readings and study guides.***Please note that there will be no make-up quizzes after they close on the classwebsite.***Other Relevant InformationDue Dates Quizzes/Assignments will not be accepted after they close on the class website.Exam Dates Each exam will need to be taken on the assigned day/time.
