YOUR TAP WATERWhere does your watercome from?MWRA supplies about 10 million gallons of high quality water each dayto three Chicopee Valley communities: Chicopee, Wilbraham, and SouthHadley Fire District #1 (FD#1). MWRA also serves 48 cities and townsin greater Boston and MetroWest. Your water comes from QuabbinReservoir. Water from the Ware River can add to the supply at times.DEAR CUSTOMER,MWRA Boardof DirectorsIan A. Bowles,ChairmanJohn J. Carroll,Vice -ChairJoseph C. Foti,SecretaryJoel A. BarreraKevin L. CotterMichael S. GoveJames W. Hunt, IIIVincent G. ManneringAndrew M. PappastergionThis report contains the 2009 test results onofyour drinking water. Hundreds of thousandsistyqualirtests have confirmed that your wateexcellent.Over the last 25 years, MWRA has mademajor improvements to the water system thatwill ensure the delivery of great water to yourtap for decades to come. One of the nextareas of concern is invasive species in thereservoirs Ð controlling those that havealready taken root, and guarding against newinvaders, such as zebra mussels. Please take a moment to read this importantinformation. We want you to share ourconfidence in your drinking water.Rain and snow falling on the watersheds - protected land around thereservoirs - turn into streams that flow to the reservoirs. Water comesin contact with soil, rock, plants, and other material as it follows nature’spath to the reservoir. While this process helps clean the water, it can alsodissolve and carry very small amounts of material into the reservoir.Minerals from soil and rock do not usually cause problems in the water. But water can also transport contaminants from human and animalactivity. These can include bacteria, viruses, pesticides and fertilizers Ðsome of which can cause illness. The test results in this report showthat these are not a problem in Quabbin Reservoir’s watershed.Quabbin watershed is protected naturally as over 90% of thewatershed is covered in forest and wetlands. About 83% of the totalwatershed land cannot be developed. The natural undevelopedwatershed helps to keep MWRA water clean and clear. Also, to ensuresafety, the streams and the reservoir are tested often and patrolleddaily by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).Sincerely,Marie T. TurnerFrederick A. LaskeyExecutive DirectorJohn T. WalshQuabbinReservoirThe Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has prepared aSource Water Assessment Program Report for the Quabbin Reservoir. The DEP report commends DCR and MWRA on the existing sourceprotection plans, and states that our Òwatershed protection programsare very successful andgreatly reduce the actual risk As water travels eastward throughof contamination.Ó The reporttunnels from the Quabbin andrecommends that DCR andWachusett Reservoirs, cleanMWRA maintain presenthydroelectric energy is produced.watershed plans and continueThe electricity generated is usedto work with the residents,to reduce MWRA’s energyfarmers, and other interesteddemands.parties to maintain the pristinewatershed areas.WareRiverSpot Pond StorageTank (in design)WachusettOakdale queductWareDisinfectionFacilityNash HillStorageLoring Rd.Hydro (underconstruction)Carroll WaterTreatmentPlant &Storage TankHultmanAqueductFellsStorageTankCity TunnelExtensionDorchesterTunnelLoring Rd.Storage TankBlue HillsNorumbegaStorageStorageTankTankBostonHarbor

YOUR TAP WATERInformation About CrossConnectionsFrom the Reservoir to Your HomeWATER TREATMENT – FROM THE RESERVOIR TO COMMUNITY PIPELINESYour water is treated at the Ware Disinfection facility before it enters the Chicopee Valley Aqueduct. The firsttreatment step is the primary disinfection where MWRA’s licensed operators carefully add measured doses ofchlorine to water to kill pathogens that may be present. Licensed operators in Chicopee perform additional boosterdisinfection at the point where the local pipes take water from the Aqueduct. Each community also treats the waterto reduce leaching of lead from home plumbing.Water must travel through the 15-mile Chicopee Valley Aqueduct and through some of the hundreds of miles of localdistribution pipes under your streets before it reaches your tap. To continue providing high quality water, each partof the water system needs routine maintenance and, when necessary, improvements or new facilities.MWRA has begun design to add ultraviolet light (UV) disinfection to the water treatment plant to meet new EPAstandards.TESTING YOUR WATER – EVERY STEP OF THE WAYTest results show few contaminants are found in the reservoir water. Thefew that are found are in very small amounts, well below EPA’s standards.Turbidity (or cloudiness of water) is one measure of overall water quality. Itshould never be over 5 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units) and can beover 1 NTU only if we can demonstrate that disinfection is not affected.Typical levels at Quabbin Reservoir are 0.4 NTU. In 2009, turbidity wasalways below EPA’s standard of 5.0 NTU. It was below the stricter Massachusetts standard of 1.0 NTU over 99.99% of the time, with the highestlevel at 4.92 NTU. This did not interfere with effective disinfection. MWRAalso tests reservoir water for pathogens - such as fecal coliform, bacteria, viruses, and the parasites Cryptosporidium and Giardia. They can enter the water from animal or human waste. All test resultswere well within state and federal testing and treatment standards.Massachusetts DEP recommends the installation of backflow prevention devices for insideand outside hose connections. For more information on crossconnections and how to helpprotect the water in your home aswell as the drinking water systemin your town, please visitwww.mwra.com/crosscon.htmlor call 617-242-5323Are There Drugs In MyDrinking Water? You may have heard newsreports about pharmaceuticalsfound in drinking water suppliesin some parts of the country. Testresults have shown no traces ofdrugs in MWRA’s water supply.Pharmaceuticals in drinkingwater are more of a concern withwater supplies that havewastewater discharges into them, but since MWRA’s watersources are well protected, thisis not a concern.Test Results - After TreatmentEPA and State regulations also require many water quality tests after treatment to check the water you are drinking.MWRA conducts tens of thousands of tests per year on over 120 contaminants (a complete list is at www.mwra.com).The only ones we find are listed below, and all levels met EPA’s limits.CompoundUnits(MCL)HighestLevelAllowed(We found)DetectedLevelAverageRange ofDetections(MCLG)IdealGoalViolationHow it gets in the waterBARIUMppm20.0070.007-0.0082NoCommon mineral in natureFLUORIDEppm40.020-0.054NoNatural depositsNITRATE ppm100.017*0.015-0.01710NoNatural depositsKEY: MCL Maximum Contaminant Level. Tapwater must meet more intensiveEnvironmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) testing requirements than bottled water, whichis regulated by the Food andDrug Administration (FDA).

ImportantInformation fromEPA and DEPWATERCONSERVATIONOn average, eachperson uses about60 gallons of watereach day. There aremany simple waysyou can conservewater and lower yourbills, including: fixingleaks, installinglow-flush toilets andlow-flow showerheads, or minimizingyour outdoor wateruse. To find outmore about MWRA’sconservationprogram, call617-242-SAVE orvisitwww.mwra.com.Results for Treated Water-In Community PipelinesTESTS IN COMMUNITY PIPESMWRA and local water departments work together to test water all the wayto the tap. We test samples of water in the city and town systems each weekfor total coliform bacteria. Total coliform bacteria can come from theintestines of warm-blooded animals, or can be found in soil, plants, or otherplaces. Most of the time, these bacteria are not harmful. However, theirpresence could signal that harmful bacteria from fecal waste may be thereas well. The EPA requires that no more than 5% of the samples in a givenmonth may be positive for total coliform. If a water sample tests positive fortotal coliform, we runHow Did We Do In 2009?more specific testsHighest % ofViolation offor E.coli. E.coli is apositive samples EPA’s 5%pathogen found in human and animal fecal waste that can causeand monthCommunitylimitillness. No E.coli was found in any CVA community in 2009. *PleaseSouthHadley40.4%(October)Yes*see page 4 for more information.FD #1Drinking Water and Peoplewith Weakened ImmuneSystemsSome people may be morevulnerable to contaminants indrinking water than the generalpopulation. Immunocompromised persons such aspersons with cancer undergoingchemotherapy, persons whohave undergone organtransplants, people withHIV/AIDS or other immunesystem disorders, someelderly, and infants can beparticulary at risk from infections. These people should seekadvice about drinking waterfrom their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines onappropriate means to lessenthe risk of infection byCryptosporidium and microbialcontaminants are availablefrom the Safe Drinking WaterHotline (1-800-426-4791).How Would I Know About AProblem With My WaterSupply?MWRA and your local waterdepartment keep close watchon the water supply. If there isa problem with your water, youwould get the news by radio, television, newspapers, stateand local government, healthofficials, and from MWRA.Contaminants In Bottled Water And Tap Water:Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence ofcontaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects canbe obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791) or MWRA. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, theMassachusetts DEP and EPA prescribe regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems.Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottledwater which must provide the same protection for public health.3

YOUR TAP WATERWhat You Need to Know About Lead in Tap WaterAll three CVA communities met EPA standards for lead in tapwater. MWRA water is lead-free when it leaves the reservoirs.MWRA and local pipes that carry the water to your community aremade mostly of iron and steel, and do not add lead to water. However, lead can get into tap water through pipes in the home, lead solder used in plumbing, and some brass fixtures. Corrosionor wearing away of lead-based materials can add lead to tap water, especially if water sits for a long time in the pipes before use. What Can I Do To ReduceExposure To Lead In DrinkingWater?Run the tap until after the waterfeels cold. To save water, fill apitcher with fresh water and placein refrigerator for future use.WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT LEAD?Your local water department tests tap water at a number of homesin the communities. But not just any homes. Under EnvironmentalProtection Agency regulations, homes that are likely to have highlead levels - usually older homes likely to have lead service linesor lead solder Ñ must be tested. The EPA rule requires that 9 outof 10, or 90%, of these sampled homes must have lead levelsbelow the Action Level of 15 parts per billion (ppb).Never use hot water from thefaucet for dri
