EmbroideryWorks Flower PurseThis purse shows off a 3-D flower sewn over a stitched appliqué for apleasing look. Add a beautiful button for the center and the result ischarming. CutterAccuQuilt Die #55007 Round FlowerAccuQuilt Die #55224 Birds¾ yard of green canvas or twill fabric for outside of purse15” x 30” batting13” x 26” lining fabric4” x7” piece green fabric for stem and leaf2” x 12” piece peach colored fabric for flower petals1/8 yard orange chiffon or organza for the 3-D portion of the flowerMadeira embroidery threadMadeira Aerofil threads matching the purse fabric for quilting and constructionBaby Lock Appliqué Fusible stabilizerOne dome shaped buttonTube turnerInstructionsAt the Computer:In this project, we will focus on using one of the new AccuQuilt features in theupdated EmbroideryWorks software. This update works in both the Mac andthe PC operating systems.1. Open the program by clicking on the EmbroideryWorksicon onthe desktop.2. Set up the workspace with the 200mm x 300mm hoop. Click onPreferences and select the Hoops category. Select the .pes file formatfrom a complete list of the hoops. Select the 200mm x 300mm hoop.Click OK (as shown in the illustration below).3. To create the flower follow the next set of steps: Click on the Merge Designs iconDesigner’s Gallery: Flower Purseon the top toolbar.Page 2

Click on the down arrow under the Catalog tab and select theAccuQuilt Appliqué category. Scroll down and select the 55007 Round Flower. Scroll down and select the stem and leaf while holding the controlbutton down. Click OK to place the design on the workspace. Arrange the stem at a slight diagonal in the lower portion of theworkspace and place the leaf in a pleasing location on the stem. Click on the Merge Designs iconon the top toolbar. Click on the down arrow under the Catalog tab and select theAccuQuilt Appliqué category. Scroll down and select 55224 Birds. Select the larger, rounder wing. Click OK to place design on the workspace. With the wing selected, go to the Utility tab. Scroll down to select the Carousel feature. Change the width and height to 110 mm. Rotate to 266 . Increase the count to 6. Click on OK. Move the flower to the end of the stem, rotating if necessary tohide the end of the stem under one of the petals. Change the thread colors for each of the design segments asdesired.4. Click on File Save As (Stitch and Working File). The working fileformat is .be.5. Click on the Printthe design.icon to print a template for exact placement ofAt the Cutting Table:1. From the purse fabric: Cut one 15” x 30” piece for purse. Two 3” x 30” pieces for handles.2. Cut or fold the chiffon or organza into eight 4” squares.3. Using the AccuQuilt Go! System cut eight round flowers from thechiffon or organza and set them aside.4. Following the manufacturer’s directions, fuse the Baby Lock Appliquéstabilizer to the back side of the peach and green fabrics that will beused for the appliquéd areas.Designer’s Gallery: Flower PursePage 3

5. Using the AccuQuilt Go! System cut six wings from the peach fabric.Set aside.6. Using the AccuQuilt Go! System cut one stem and one leaf from thegreen fabric. Set them aside.Prepping the Purse Fabric:1. Layer the fabric with wrong side to the batting.2. Quilt in a curved grid on the Baby Lock Sashiko or Sewing machine (theSashiko machine was used in the sample).At the Embroidery and Sewing Machine:1. Using the printed template of the flower and stem, determine wherethey will be placed on the purse fabric.2. Hoop the quilted fabric.3. With the machine set up for embroidery, retrieve the flower design.4. Embroider the design while following the color stops. The first colorstop for each unit is the positioning step and is used to perfectly placethe appliquéd shape.5. The second color stop is for embroidering the design to the fabric.6. Trim piece to 13” x 26” with the design centered for the purse front.7. Layer four flower shaped pieces of the chiffon and fold a tuck into thecenter. Stitch into place by hand or using the button stitch on thesewing machine.Designer’s Gallery: Flower PursePage 4

8. Repeat with the other four flower shaped pieces.9. Layer onto the appliquéd flower shape on the purse front and tackdown with hand stitching.10.Sew button into center of the flower shapes.Purse Construction:1. Fold straps into 1½” x 22” piece with right sides together.2. Sew the straps on the long side using a 3/8” seam allowance.3. Using the tube turner, turn straps right side out. Press seams open as youturn it. Then press with the seam at the center of each strip.4. Measure and mark 3” from the right and left side on the top of the purse,both front and back pieces. These straps will go to the inside of each ofthe marks.5. Pin the straps into place, making sure they are not twisted.6. For the rest of the construction, use ½” seam allowances.7. With right sides together, attach the short ends of the lining to the shortends of the purse fabric. Take care to include the straps in the seamallowance.8. Press seam toward the lining.9. Open the fabrics so the lining fabric is on the left and the purse fabric ison the left.Designer’s Gallery: Flower PursePage 5

10.Align the seams in the center and pin to keep in place as you sew onelong seam.11.On the other side, sew the long seam leaving an opening in the lining endfor turning the purse.12.Box the corners of both the lining and purse.13.Turn right side out through the opening left in the lining and hand stitchclosed.14.Push the lining into the purse and press around the top edge of the purse.15.To finish, top stitch about 3/8” away from the top edge and press.For other exciting projects like this one, visit our �s Gallery: Flower PursePage 6
