Young Achievers has taken partin this nationwide movement since October 2006.YALC staff and youth rallied with other Philadelphiaarea providers on the steps of The FranklinInstitute to draw attention to the budget cuts onafterschool programs across the city. In its secondyear, OST Summer on the Plaza provides an arenafor children to express themselves, and g attention to Philadelphia’s OST Programs.(phila.gov/dhs)2011 YALC Summer Camp youth from Finletter and Creightonsites performed during the OST Summer on The Plaza event.Project Based Learning & The First Ever PBL Cup Award!Project-based learning, or PBL, is the use of in-allowing students to develop valuable research skillsdepth and rigorous classroom projects to facilitateas students engage in design, problem solving,learning and assess student competence. PBL wasdecisionpromoted by the Buck Institute for Education in theThrough Project-based learning, students learnlate 1990s, in response to school reform efforts offrom these experiences and apply them to the worldthat time. Project-based learning is an instructionaloutside their classroom. PBL is a teaching techniquemethod that provides students with complex tasksthat promotes different practices, such as newbased on challenging questions or problems thatlearning habits, emphasizing creative thinking skillsinvolve the students' problem solving, decisionby allowing students to find that there are manymaking, investigative skills, and reflection thatways to solve a problem. The core idea of project-includes teacher facilitation, but not direction. PBL isbased learning is that real-world problems capturefocused on questions that encourage students tostudents' interest and provoke serious thinking asencounter the central concepts and principles of athe students acquire and apply new knowledge in asubject through a hands-on approach. Studentsproblem-solving context.form their own investigation of a guiding question,Young Achievers adapted the PBL curriculum tomaking,andinvestigativeactivities.everyday programming in 2008. Since the beginningPBL has offered our youth new and exciting ways tolearn. In 2011 Philadelphia OST announced theywould be hosting the first ever PBL Cup. YALC youthimmediately got to work on their projects. Youth atthe Finletter summer site put together a projectbased on nutrition and fitness. They focused on theimportance of a healthy lifestyle and the advantagesof physical activity on a daily basis. Page 3Young AchieversTheir project presentation included a large posterdisplay of their data and project activities as well asan original dance performance.Youth from the Creighton Summer Camp site decidedto learn about animals. They researched domestic,wild, farm and service animals in their communities.They used the internet, books, community visitorsand hands on research to collect their data. Visitorsand hands on research included Project Troop Dogs,a non-profit which benefits service animals in themilitary and a guided tour of WB Saul agriculturalhigh school in Philadelphia. They listed the pros andcons of having each animal in their community andcreated two 3-D dioramas. The first showed animalsin a farm setting and the second showed animals in arainforest setting. Their presentation included theirdioramas, a large poster display, papier-mâchéanimal masks and reports on each animal theylearned about.Part science fair and part talent show, the PBLSummer Cup featured a variety of project topics.Over 200 students and staff members from 25 OSTprograms participated in the event. Judges camefrom organizations across the city, including theCreighton youth won 3rd place in the first ever city widePBL Summer Cup Competition in 2011!United Way, the Franklin Institute, Foundations Inc.and the City of Philadelphia. YALC Creighton youthwon 3rd place! Other winners included CambodianAssociation of Greater Philadelphia, who used theSummer Olympics as a vehicle to explore the culturesof countries around the world and Institute for theDevelopment of African-American Youth (IDAAY) OSTprogram at Wagner Middle School who completed aproject about the relationship between human beingsand the natural world.UnitedWorkshops and Guest ships. Each year YALC utilizes communityresources and leaders to create fun, interactive andYouth grades K-3enjoy a chess lessonfrom Chess Times.educational workshops and events for our edge and the opportunity for personal growthand development in an inviting and inspirationalway.Past workshops have included Drug Prevention, FireSafety and Prevention, Self Esteem, Body Awareness,Good Touch/Bad Touch, Roots & Wings Storytelling,Chess lessons, Bicycle and Street Safety, VersatileDance Company, Creative Writing with TEOP, Dr.Veronica’s Health and Wellness, Vision Boards withlife coach Russ Barrens, Dental Hygiene workshops,PNC Financial Guidance and Saving for Youth, visitsfrom The eagle Book Mobile and much more.Pictures Continued on page 4Youth grades 4-6take part in aworkshop led by LifeCoach and MentorRuss Barrens

Page 5Young AchieversPhiladelphia Health Centers Week, Art Poster ContestEvery year the city of Philadelphia and the HealthFederation of Philadelphia holds an art contest foryouth during National Health Center Week. Youth areinvited to create posters depicting health centers intheir community, the people who work at the healthcenters, visits to the center or the different peoplewho go to the health center. After the contest theyannounce winners and present awards during anevent that celebrates the accomplishments of thePhiladelphia area's Federally Qualified Health Centersand recognize the achievements of the young ty health centers.For the past four years at least two youth from YALChave placed in the Philadelphia Health Week ArtAbove: Young Achievers President & CEO Gloria Navas-Stuhlwith our youth as they receive their awards.Poster Contest.Above: Anjanay S. receives an award for her poster with thesupport of her family. Page 6Young AchieversSchool Year ProgrammingHomework CompletionYALC calls on parents to work as a TEAM when it comesto your child’s everyday academics.Young Achievers believes that homework is a veryimportant follow-up of your child’s daily lesson. YoungAchievers staff is here to facilitate and assist your childwith their homework comprehension and completion.For the academic success of your child, parents areexpected to review their child’s assignments daily toensure assignment deadlines are being met and also tokeep aware of child’s academic improvement throughout the year.For the success of your child YALC maintains a staff toyouth ratio of 1:12 and/or lower. Young Achievers willwork with children in smaller group settings to focuson specific areas of concentration where children mayneed extra help.For example youth in the same grade may need toprepare for a test or may need some extra helpunderstanding multiplication, telling time, leting constructive responses.YALC staff are committed to partnering with parentsand guardians to improve the educational potential ofevery child by working together to cooperatively raisestudent achievement levels.

Page 7Young AchieversCrafts, Games and SocializationAt Young Achievers youth take part in a variety ofenriching activities that stimulate their body and mindand help build social skills.Crafting is one of the most interesting hobbies one canenjoy. Many adults enjoy different types of crafts, suchas sewing, knitting, scrap booking and so forth.However, crafts should not be enjoyed by only theadults; children should also be encouraged from ayoung age to be involved in craft making. Children canreap many benefits from making crafts. By makingcrafts, children can build their imagination, improvefine motor skills and find hidden talent. Educationalgames are important for keeping children interested inlearning,forexamplesomegamescomewitheducational skills and academic concepts, such asspelling, math or problem solving. Page 8Young AchieversSummer ProgrammingYALC Summer Camp has been designed to promotechildren’s talents through performing arts, danceand movement, sportsmanship, dramatic play, selfexpressivedrawingfolklore, storytellingandpainting,and hands-onmulticulturaleducationalexperiences. Children are encouraged totake part in different activities includingsports such as soccer, volleyball, basketballand baseball as well as general school yardgames and activities such as relay races,hula-hoops, jumping rope and frisbee.
