NEWSLETTERJUNE 2019FIRST MERIDIAN HEIGHTSPRESBYTERIAN CHURCHFROM PASTOR KIMDear Friends in Christ,It’s June! I find that very hard to believe, but it’s true! As thesummer heats up, and so do your summer schedules, pleasenote the following things:BOLD CHANGE:A SERMON SERIES ON THE BOOK OF ACTSBeginning with Pentecost Sunday, June 9, I will be preachingabout the Holy Spirit’s gift of bold change (and bold speech, bold action, bold acceptance, bold love) to the early Churchand to us. The gift of bold change is often dropped on us like acan of orange paint that leaves a gigantic splot on the roof of ahouse! It doesn’t always look like good news at first, but if wecover it up too fast, we may miss what the Spirit is up to! Ifyou’ve never had that happen to you, then come to worship inJune and hear the story of Mr. Plumbean and how he dealswith just such an orange splot (made when a seagull dropped acan of orange paint on his house; nobody knows why). Thetransformation of Mr. Plumbean’s house and neighborhoodmirrors the transformation of the Church in Acts andforeshadows what God has in mind for our individual lives ANDour congregation! During worship in June and July, in additionto bold stories, bold singing, bold preaching, bold fellowship, and bold colors, we’ll hear from representatives of variouscommunity organizations bringing bold change to those inneed. The congregation will have opportunities to contribute toall the boldness, visually and prayerfully.Plan to join us for aSummer of BoldChange!BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS- BOLD BUILDING BEAUTIFYINGThe members of the Buildings andGrounds Committee have divided upresponsibility for the various interior andexterior areas of maintenance betweenthemselves. However, we are in need ofsomeone to serve on the committee andoversee the interior decorating/designaspect of the committee’s work. Duringour Summer of Bold Change, Buildingsand Grounds is partnering with some ofthe young families to makeover thenursery near the Sanctuary. It won’t betoo involved, just some fresh paint and afew items to make it look more up to dateand welcoming. There are other suchprojects that need to be tackled – nothingbig – but that will make a big difference! If you are interested in helping coordinatesome of this work, please talk to JohnMelind or me.PLEASE CONTINUE TOGIVE THIS SUMMERWhile folks are away on summervacations, the financial obligations of ourcongregation continue. If you havepledged to give a specific amount eachweek or month, thank you, and Iencourage you to keep up with thatpledge even if you are away. You can maila check to the church or giveelectronically. If you have questions, feelfree to contact Alexis Gonzales atalexis@fmhpc.org or at the church phonenumber.Have a wonderful June!Grace and Peace,KimFIRST MERIDIAN HEIGHTS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH1

NEWSLETTERJUNE 2019Dorcas Baskets Ministry in the Dominican Republic(Thank You, FMH Deacons!)Whitewater Valley Presbytery started a partnership with the Iglesia Evangelica Dominicana (IED)Church six years ago in the southwest region of the Dominican Republic (DR). This also supportsone of the PC(USA) mission sites as well as Jo Ella Holman, one of our PC(USA) missionaries.Throughout this partnership, we have had numerous people in our presbytery travel to meet andbuild relationships with the churches in this region.During our time together, we have learned that one of their biggest needs is educational suppliesand curriculum for their children, youth and adults. The southwest region is the poorest area inthe country, and many of the churches do not have the financial means or resources to getsupplies. For many years our presbytery wrote Vacation Bible School curriculum in partnership with ourbrothers and sisters in Mexico (which is on the wwvp.org website). Since this material was alreadyin Spanish, it was clear that we should share it with our new friends in the DR. The name “DorcasBaskets” came from one of the IED churches who filled baskets with donated items from membersand shared them with neighbors in need. We adopted the name and decided to invite churches inour presbytery to put together “Dorcas Baskets” containing craft materials and curriculum for 120children throughout a week of VBS.This is the fifth year that our presbytery has run this mission ministry. Every year, when groupstravel to the DR to deliver 12 Dorcas Baskets, we hear repeatedly how important these are to thechurches. Yes, children can attend VBS without making a craft, but these materials allow childrento be creative; to have a hands-on experience with the Biblical story; and to take this craft homeand retell the story to their parents. The Deacons of First Meridian Heights again donated VBS supplies for 120 children. On behalf ofthe Hispanic Ministry Lead Team of the presbytery and the IED church, we thank you for yoursupport of this ministry!Children from the 2018 VBSprogram.
