shovel tests have not! Deeply buried deposits meanthat shovel tests are often up to a meter in depth, and compacted soils make for tough digging. Thefield crew has been working hard and putting insome serious elbow grease to move the projectalong!Chris Sperling presenting at the annual ASVmeetingFairfax archaeologists, Chris Sperling and AimeeWells, also presented papers at the Fairfax CountyArchaeology and Cultural Resources’ (FOFA)recent symposium, entitled “At Rest? Cemeteriesand Cemetery Protection in Fairfax County andBeyond.” Aimee’s presentation explored the use ofarchaeology as biography, using the Melvin familycemetery as a case study. Through archaeologicalinquiry, genealogical research, and osteologicalstudy, archaeologists uncovered a great deal aboutwho Mr. Melvin was, not just in death but also inlife. In the lab staff, crew, and volunteers are busyprocessing the artifacts excavated from bothRiverbend Park and Mt. One very interesting presentation was by Cassandraand Madeline Mullin, daughters of John Mullin,Fort A.P. Hill Archaeologist:BringingArchaeological Sites to the Public – How weCreated a Simulated Archaeological Site thatBrought Monticello to Richmond. This is theirabstract for the presentation.ability to identify soil color and type this activityincreases understanding of the scientific aspects ofarchaeology and helps create a full and encompassedpicture of the past.In August 2019, the Public Education Committee ofthe Council of Virginia Archaeologists sponsored apublic archaeology event at the Virginia Departmentof Historic Resources. The event was coordinatedwith the Heart of Virginia Council of the Boys Scoutsof America and gave Scouts an opportunity to earn theArchaeology Merit Badge. During the event, participants learned the basics about archaeology fieldand laboratory work using a simulated archaeologicalsite based on archaeological features at Monticello. The simulated site was created by copying portions ofa feature plan drawing onto a large drop cloth. As partof the event, the participants were given bagscontaining actual artifacts from Monticello and askedto identify the materials. They were then asked toplace the artifacts on the drop cloth site plan andexplain how their interpretation of the artifactschanged once they saw the artifacts in context. Thistype of simulated site proved to be a relatively simplemethod to teach the importance of provenience inarchaeology and can be duplicated for use in placeswhere it is not possible or feasible to visit an actualarchaeological site.John Mullin and daughter Madeline with drop clothMilena Krushelnisky, from the Virtual CurationLaboratory at VCU, Test your MunskillsShe was demonstrating the Munsell process bycreating an interactive scaled up version of a fewMunsell book pages. We had a wonderful tour of the archaeology lab atWilliam and Mary, where they showed us artifactsfrom the Custis Square. Finally, I received a very special award from theKittiewan Committee for my 12 years of service. Iam stepping aside to let someone else serve for theASV. The pipe on the award is a 3D scan print ofthe Late prehistoric clay pipe they found on theterrace above the creek at Kittiewan this pastsummer, possibly even Contact. Bill Bjork andWayne Edwards also received this prestigiousaward, as they, too, are leaving the KittiewanCommittee.Below, you will see a 3D model of the FairfieldManor on the left, and a 3D model of thearchaeological remains of the Fairfield brickfoundation. They are designed to fit together like apuzzle! I have posted a video on my Facebook pageif you want to see it in action!Datum PointNovember 2019page 5

datum point temperature, both steam-water with its 32" F. datum and ammonia with the customary —40 F. datum were considered for setting the temperature, as was also the possibility of using a —40* F. datum for the ammonia phase and a separate 32" F. datum for the water-steam phase. The single 32 F. datum appeared preferable and was adopted.
