CEO Programme2018 World Cancer Congress2-4 OctoberKuala Lumpur, MalaysiaOverviewThe CEO Programme, UICC’s flagship leadershipdevelopment initiative, aims to build a community,and strengthen leadership and managementcapacities of senior executives from across theUICC membership.A total of 105 CEOs from 53 countries signed upto participate in the activities on offer at the 2018World Cancer Congress: three exclusive lunchtime sessions and a dedicated CEO networkingbreakfast.Initially launched at the 2016 World CancerCongress in Paris, the CEO Programme is fastbecoming an invaluable platform for cancer controlleaders looking to improve their performance andbuild their networks.Besides the Congress, the Programme alsofeatures regular regional ‘Leadership in Action’meetings, addressing needs and themes relevantto the host region.“As head of a patient group, I face challengingsituations daily. Kara MagsanocAlikpala, a broadcast journalist by profession as wellas Founding President of a cancer support network inthe Philippines, probed into the professional lives of thethree speakers to draw out their stories and individualapproaches to leadership.Walk the talk provided an opportunity to hear aboutstrategies implemented by CEOs in different health andpolicy settings to translate global cancer commitmentsinto effective national action.Supported by the informal format of the session, thepanellists were generous in sharing the challenges andlearning from their personal experiences of leadershipand the session soon opened up to CEOs in theaudience who lent their points of view in a seamlessand wide-ranging open discussion.The conversation touched on a variety of topics,shining a light on the complex demands CEOs facein their role: the pressure of constantly being theface of the organisation (and sometimes its story,when personally affected by cancer); the difficult, butessential, relationships with media and policy-makers;the frequent blurring of personal and professional lives;the importance of planning for succession, particularlyfor founders; and the need to have a professionalstructure in place, including a solid governanceframework.At the end of the session, the panellists shared theirtop recommendations to help CEOs build the resiliencenecessary to cope with the demands they face: Work hard, but don’t forget to take care ofyourself Have patience and don’t refrain from makingtough decisions Be humble and don’t consider yourselfindispensable“It was an enriching experience forme to interact and network with fellowCEOs and leaders from across theworld for the first time”Maud Mwakasungula, ExecutiveDirector, Women Coalition AgainstCancer (Malawi)CEO Programme - 2018 World Cancer CongressArnie Purushotham set the scene by sharing hisexperience of running and implementing a “hub-andspoke” model of cancer care delivery in settings atthe opposing ends of health system development: atthe King’s Health Partners Comprehensive CancerCentre in London, where a satellite centre run bytrained healthcare professionals rather than medicaloncologists serves the population in the south of thecity; and in North East India, where Tata Trusts, inpartnership with multiple State Governments, is rollingout a distributed cancer care model with the visionto deliver standardized and affordable care closer topatients’ homes.This was followed by three case studies: Grace Injene described the Kenya CancerAssociation’s efforts to push a ‘Cancer Fund’bill through parliament, with the aim to extendcoverage of cancer treatment in the national healthinsurance system. Isabelle Aloi-Timeus of Salvati A.C. talked aboutthe organisational challenges of putting togetherand running effective advocacy coalitions. Todd Harper outlined how Cancer CouncilVictoria works to shift attention of policymakerstowards some of the most neglected issues incancer control in the state, i.e. care for Aboriginalcommunities, research on rare cancers, and theobesity epidemic.The Q&A session touched on issues such as mobilisingfunds for alliances and ways to develop a case forgovernment investment in cancer control. The keylearning from the discussion was best summarised byone of the speakers who stated that only by buildinga strong evidence base, including proof of returnon investment, can cancer organisations bringgovernments on board to address the key gaps intheir countries’ cancer control efforts.2

Innovation in fundraising:Exploring creative resourcemobilisation strategies Provide donors with an experience beyondthe act of giving – in fact Kythe’s annual kiteflying event, its flagship fundraiser, is also usedby sponsoring corporations as a team-buildingexercise for their staffInnovation in fundraising tackled a topic at the topof every CEO’s agenda: how to mobilise the necessaryresources to fund the operations of their organisations. Nurture your volunteers - far from simplyengaging in one-off events and activities, Kythe’svolunteers develop a strong attachment to theorganisation through regular involvement in bothfundraising efforts as well as outreach activities.This creates a long-term virtuous cycle wherebythe young volunteers of today become thecorporate champions of tomorrowThe session was chaired by Owen Sharp of MovemberFoundation, a fitting example of how a small creativeidea can, if executed with excellence, scale up to trulyglobal levels. Speakers followed with three case studieson innovative approaches to fundraising.The first described how Rethink Breast Cancer (RBC)is turning the discourse on cancer in Canada upsidedown, while at the same time raising funds for theorganisation. Targeted mainly at a young audience,RBC’s empowering and energetic campaigns servenot only to raise funds, but also create awareness byencouraging younger generations to better understandand talk about cancer. From creating their own productline of gifts, ‘give-a-care’, which addresses realpractical needs of young women with breast cancer,to streaming their successful fundraiser party events,‘boobyballs’, and selling advertising slots throughFacebook Live, RBC are pushing the boundaries ofcontent- and event- fundraising. Their latest pilotis to produce a YouTube edutainment show followingthe story of a young woman with cancer, which theyhope will attract and educate a large number of onlinefollowers and create revenue opportunities for theorganisation.In the second case study, Kythe Foundation’s ExecutiveDirector shared some tips on how the organisation triesto build a successful and sustainable funding model: Create consistent branding and messaging – forexample all of Kythe’s activities are characterisedby a positive and uplifting ethos in line with theirbelief that every child has the right to learn, play,and grow even while confined in a hospitalCEO Programme - 2018 World Cancer CongressThe last case study centred on Fundación CIMA, abreast cancer group in Mexico, and the challenge itfaces every October, during breast cancer awarenessmonth, to stand out in a competitive market where over150 breast cancer organisations vie to make their pinkbrighter and catch the eye of the Mexican donor. Toensure its message doesn’t get lost, CIMA’s strategiesinclude: spreading support across the year by runningits ‘pink’ marketing campaigns in conjunction withother key dates, such as Mother’s Day or InternationalWomen’s Day; and targeting new segments of thepopulation by looking for unlikely allies, for examplewhen it teamed up with a famous all-male Mexicanmusic band to sensitise their ‘macho’ fan-base to theissue of breast cancer.The most effective strategy to grow awareness andattract resources for cancer control in the long termthough, CIMA’s President ultimately emphasised, wasfor organisations to join arms with their ‘competitors’,as the benefits of reaching greater exposure byleveraging different organisational strengths in jointactivities, ultimately overshadowed any downsides forindividual organisations. To make sure we truly standout, it is better to stand together, she concluded.3
