The Rectory,Church LaneHelstonDecember/January 2018Dear Everyone,Christmas Tree FestivalSt Michael’s Church in Helston working with the Fisherman’s Missionis privileged to be holding a Christmas Tree Festival from WednesdayDecember 6th to Saturday December 11th. Julian Waring from theFisherman’s Mission has worked hard to find 50 organisations withinthe town & community able & willing to provide a Christmas Tree, sothe whole church will be filled with a particular type of beauty throughthe week – the beauty of the world of nature indoors as well asoutdoors! We are delighted that the Christmas Tree festival will be opened byHelston’s Mayor, Councillor Gillian Greer, at 10.30 on WednesdayDecember 6th. The Fisherman’s Mission are also enabling a concert totake place in St Michael’s Church on the evening of Saturday,December 9th. (for details - see Page 5)The Fisherman’s Mission does wonderful work with seafarers whosework is often done in the most hazardous of conditions & equally ofteninvolves many days at sea meaning separation from families & thedangers of isolation & loneliness. The work the Fisherman’s Missiondoes, to bring comfort & relief to those who catch our fish, is trulywonderful & often unheralded. The Fisherman’s Mission maintains a visible profile in Helston throughthe charity shop in Meneage Street which I hope that you are able tosupport. The shop was opened by the much admired Cornish fishrestaurant chef, Nathan Outlaw. But it is not only the top chefs whohave reason to be grateful to our fishermen. All those of us who love to4

eat fish have reason to be grateful to them too because it is their hardwork in the face of danger that makes our enjoyment possible. With my very best wishes,Canon David MillerConcert in St Michael’s Churchat 7.30pm on Saturday 9th DecemberThe Cadgewith Singers &The Treliske Hospital ChoirRetiring collection forThe Fisherman’s MissionFlag days for December/JanuaryDecember 25th Christmas Day“26th St Stephen“28th Holy InnocentsJanuary 1st .New Years Day“6 th .Epiphany“25th . HELSTON &WENDRONThe Mothers’ Union met on 26th October for a Harvest Festival.Twelve were present with Kath Oliver presiding. Rev Dorothy devised aform of service in the Celtic style for Lughnasadh”,“Lammas”, “Loaf-mass” Day: the festival of thefirst wheat harvest of the year. In 1843 the RevSamuel Hawker of Morwenstow began the modernday Harvest Festivals, decorating churches andthen singing Victorian hymns. After this we had a visit from the Mid-Cornwall Refuge Trust speaker,Pippa. There is a refuge for men and for women. Currently there are 6women and 14 children in the Women’s Refuge & 5 men and 2 childrenin the Men’s Refuge. This Refuge is 3 years old. The male Refuge isfunded by the National Lottery & the female by the Government &Local Authorities. (See also Sue Spencer’s report on Pages 28/29)There is a counselling service for those in trauma, also a one to oneservice on “what is abuse” focussing on how people get into thissituation. A “change for you” group works with males, females andchildren when other agencies are involved. Complete relocation is oftenthe only solution for their safety, when they are ready for independentliving. Then they need donations of furniture, cookers, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, scraps of material, curtains, kitchen utensils- even ifpre-used.27th November- 2nd December is “Domestic Awareness Week” whenthere will be an Art exhibition & auction on 2nd December from 10am4pm in the Old Bakery near Radio Cornwall at Truro.Kath thanked Pippa for a most interesting talk.Francis M Searle12

Legends & Cornish Churches‘The name St Endellion’, wroteJohn Betjeman, ‘is like a ring ofbells.’ But how did this churchwith it’s tower of Lundy granitecome to be near the northCornwall coast overlooking theBristol Channel within site, on aclear day, of the island of itsbirth?I dreamt death came the other nightAnd heaven’s gate swung wideWith kindly face an angel cameAnd welcomed me insideAnd there to my astonishmentStood folks I’d known on earthSome I had deemed as quite unfitOr but of little worthIndignant words sprang to my lipsBut never were set freeFor every face showedstunned surprise;No-one expected me!15St Endelienta, to whom thechurch is dedicated, was thedaughter of a Welsh prince whocame to live a hermit’s life in theTretinney valley. Legend has itthat she lived on nothing butcow’s milk. When a local lordkilled her cow, her godfather, none other than King Arthur, came and killed him. Endelientathen proved her sanctity bybringing both the cow and thelord back to life. She later ordered that on herdeath, her body was to be takenon an ox cart along the road untilit stopped. This spot was to beher shrine- the church of StEndellion

Thank you toeveryone who has helped make the Flora Day Refreshments sosuccessful. Please let us know if you would be interested in organising thisimportant event. It would be very sad to see it fade away.-Heather Thorn (heatherthorn@supernet.com)16

Coming to my sensesWhen I sit in a pew at St Michael’s there are so many things that I thinkabout with true gratitude.I worked away from Helston for many years but my sense of smellcould evoke wonderful memories of home, my childhood, friends andfamily. I would like to share some of these aromas. The waft of bread baking reminds me of walking up Shute Hill withMum, a Wearne’s loaf wrapped in white tissue paper held snugly. Icould not wait to get home before nibbling off a crusty corner.A heady pungent mix of liniment, wet leather and carbolic soap evokesthe changing rooms at the Grammar School where my Dad wouldinflate the footballs on a Sunday afternoon. This was always followedby a game of badminton or some gymnastics on the coconut mats.Floor polish celebrates the Grammar School caretaker ‘Heppy’. Dadwould go to his office and between them they would put the world torights. The miles he must have covered, with his not so trusty buffer tomake the corridors, hall and gym floors so sleek and shiny show greatdedication.Cakes fresh from the oven remind me of Saturday mornings. Dad,Susan and I would descend on the kitchen, fresh from hockey, netballand football matches. Mum had been baking to fill the tins for a fewdays and it was hard to wait until the rock buns or saffron buns (“wadsto Dad”) had cooled down. The bouquet of moth balls provide treasured memories of sitting inChurch with Gran Williams. The ‘Sunday Best’ coat had been releasedfrom the tall dark wardrobe and she would sit next to me with herbeautiful smile, helping me to find the place in the Service Book.Staying at my Grandparents cottage near Liskeard, was a greatadventure. Lavender gives prized recollections of taking Gran a cup of

tea in bed. She would sit up in her pink fluffy bed coat and dangle herlemon woollen bed socks and make room for me to place the tea onthe table. I would sit on the end of the bed and we would plan our daywhich often included being shown how to make sweet and savouryfoods from a variety of Cornish recipes.I treasure the scent of Lily of the Valley. So many joyous Flora Day’sspent as a family, with close friends using our home as a base betweendances, the Cheap Jack’s and the Fair. Mum would also buy candles, drawer liners, perfume and body lotion to enjoy the fragrance all yearround. All of these aromas evoke the feeling of love given to me by my lateMum and Dad and my continued love for them. Thank you, Lord, formy sense of smell.GENESIS: 27: 27 -And he came near and kissed him, and he smelled thesmell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of myson is the smell of the field which the LORD has blessed.Amanda BoxerPENTYR SINGERS CONCERTSaturday 9th December at 7pmat The Old Cattle MarketGuest soloists Maia Roberts – FluteMaddie Martin -SopranoThe Shanty MenIn support of Cornwall Hospice CareTickets 5 at the door or from Choir members19
