Dear Parishioners,After this Sunday, i.e., this weekend, there will be a bit ofa parting of the ways between the Extraordinary Formand The Ordinary Form – at least in terms of liturgical color.Saint Joseph Catholic ChurchJanuary 23rd/24th 2021Next Sunday, the Ordinary Form will continue to dress in green, thecolor of “Ordinary Time,” or the time “following.” The ExtraordinaryForm, however, will don purple, the color of penitence and anticipation. The forms will coalesce again come Ash Wednesday, but thegreen/purple color disparity will endure until then. The Extraordinary Form, and, by the way, also the various AnglicanOrdinariates will retain the traditional season known as Septuagesima, akind of preparation for Lent. Really, it’s just that. The Church hasalways recognized that Lent is a period of rigorous self-denial andmortification. She also recognized that, due to human weakness (i.e.,our fallen human nature) people aren’t accustomed to go from oneextreme, if I may use that word, to another. In a way, a sudden changefrom a post-Christmas way of life, a kind of relative ease, to rigidmortification is not an easy one. Septuagesima provides a way todiscard indulgence gradually and assume austerity in a kind of slowmotion. In a way it’s like using a nicotine patch or gum to ease one’sway into life without cigarettes. Yes, the analogy is a bit of a stretch, butit’s the best I could come up with. Anyway, come next Sunday therewill be no more Alleluias in the EF, a condition that will endure untilthe Easter Vigil (God grant that we will HAVE our customary EasterVigils this year!). The OF will take that same practice up beginning AshWednesday.A propos Ash Wednesday, once again, I plan to give as many folks aspossible the opportunity to go to Mass, receive ashes and go to HolyCommunion at Lent’s “starting gate.” There will be three ExtraordinaryForm Masses, at 7:30 AM, noon and 6:00 PM and one Ordinary FormMass at 4:00 PM.So let’s try to gain as much fruit from the post Epiphany season as wecan. Ss. Paul, Polycarp, Timothy St. Thomas Aquinas will help us dojust that in the upcoming week, my dear Family. God bless you.Father MagieraA Parish Apostolate of the Priestly Fraternity of St. PeterFr. Michael W. CandlemasFeast of Saint BlaiseThe Feast of Saint Blaise is on February 3rd. Wewill celebrate the blessing of the throats after allMasses on Saturday, January 30th and Sunday,January 31st and, of course, February 3rd. Ageneral, congregational blessing will be givenfrom the altar.Candlemas, also known as the Feast of thePresentation of Jesus Christ and also the Purificationof Our Lady, is a day commemorating thepresentation of Jesus in the Temple. It is based uponthe account of the presentation of Jesus in Luke2:22–40. It falls on February 2, which istraditionally the 40th day of and the conclusion of the Christmas–Epiphany season. While it is customary for Christians in somecountries to remove their Christmas decorations on Twelfth Night, those in other Christian countries historically remove them onCandlemas. On Candlemas, many Christians also bring their candlesto their local church, where they are blessed and then used for therest of the year. These blessed candles serve as a symbol of JesusChrist, who referred to Himself as the Light of the World.Depending on the weather, Father Magiera would like to solemnizeCandlemas this year. We will have a sung Mass at 6:00 PM onTuesday, February 2. Please bring any candles you'd like blessedand Father Magiera will bless them before the Mass. Weatherpermitting, we will distribute candles, light them, and process aroundthe block. If the weather is bad and if space permits, we will processaround the church. If space does not permit, no worries, I won'tdistribute candles, but everything else will happen.“Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishopand martyr, may God deliver you from everydisease of the throat and from every other illness,in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and ofthe Holy Spirit.” Amen.Job AvailableSt. Petronille Catholic Church in Glen Ellyn is seeking to hire aDirector of Young Adult Ministry.
