Luxor OverviewLuxor is a lighting transformer and controller capable ofcontrolling groups of lights that are initiated by programmedevents. These events are adjustments of light intensity at settimes. All lights within a system are communicated with andpowered via two-wire connections. All lights within a systemcommunicate with the same two-wire connections that alsopower the system.Luxor ComponentsNoteLuxor is intended for use with FX Luminaire LEDfixtures or devices containing FX Luminaire ZD Technology or ZDC Technology . Use of otherfixtures is not recommended due to the absence ofcommunication capabilities. Luxor is not for use withincandescent fixtures.Core CoverChassisFacepackFacepack ConnectionLUXORLCD ScreenChassis LEDClickable Scroll WheelTerminal BlocksHome ButtonFuse CoverBack ButtonFixture Assignment PortsFigure 1: Luxor ControllerFigure 2: Luxor Facepack3

Installing the Luxor TransformerStep 1: Locating the Transformer1.Locate transformer(s) in a well-ventilated area awayfrom direct irrigation spray and central to the proposedinstallation site of the majority of the lighting fixtures. Theprimary goal is to minimize the length of cable runs fromyour transformer to the lighting fixtures, which minimizesvoltage drop and cable size. A common mistake is to locatethe single transformer on the service side of the house orin the garage, which might result in excessively long cableruns to reach lighted areas. Transformer(s) with power cordsmust be located adjacent to a 120-volt, GFCI-protectedexterior electrical receptacle. If a 120-volt power source isnot available at the desired transformer installation location,it is advised that you hire a licensed electrician to run adedicated 120-volt, 15-amp circuit to the desired location. For the international/export Luxor version, the previouslymentioned information applies for 230-volt, 10-amp circuits.2. Test all existing receptacles with both a receptacle tester anda digital voltmeter or amp clamp to verify proper wiring andvoltage at the receptacle.Step 2: Mounting Transformerstransformer on the screw.3. Use a level and a pencil to determine and mark locations forthe bottom anchors. Remove transformer from wall. Drillbottom anchor holes and install anchors.4. Place transformer back on top of the uppermost mountingscrew and install screws into anchors at bottom of thetransformer to secure it to the wall.Step 2: ContinuedPost-Mount Installation5. Install pressure-treated 4" x 4" x 36" (10 cm x 10 cm x 92 cm)minimum post in concrete footing.6. Repeat wall-mount installation instructions (Figure 3on page 5), without the use of wall anchors. For additional information regarding installation techniques, visitfxl.com and click on the Professionals tab.All Luxor controllers come equipped with a 5' (1.5 m), 12 AWG(2.05 mm), 3-prong electrical power cord. Only use the Luxorpower cord in conjunction with a GFCI-protected, 120-voltexterior receptacle (or 230-volt receptacle for international/export version).Wall-Mount Installation1.Install all transformers a minimum of 12" (30.5 cm) above thefinish grade, as measured from finish grade to the bottom ofthe transformer and according to code.2. Drill pilot holes into the mounting surface, insert anchors, and install screws into the anchors, leaving approximately1/8" (0.3 cm) of the thread exposed on the screw. Mount theNoteWhen installing the Luxor Wi-Fi module, considerincreasing the installation height to improve signalstrength and screen visibility.5

Installing the Luxor TransformerStep 3: Running Cable to the FixturesOnce the transformer has been installed and determined allfixture locations, the next step is to run the correct size cablefrom the transformer to the fixtures. FX Luminaire LED fixturesrequire between 10 and 15 volts for optimal operation andlongevity. This is accomplished by the following:1.Grouping fixtures into distance zones as illustrated below. Donot have a fixture that is 10' (3 m) away from the transformeron the same cable run as one that is 100' (30 m) away.2. Use the proper cabling method for the application. Try tocenter-load all cable runs when possible to minimize thevoltage differential between fixtures.3. Use a correctly sized cable to accommodate voltage drop. Asa general rule of thumb, limit the wattage load per cable runto no more than 160 watts.CIRCUITING GUIDELINESLoads Per CableClose-Zone 0–40' (0 - 12.2 m)12 AWG (2.05 mm): 160 watts max.10 AWG (2.59 mm): 180 watts max.8 AWG (3.26 mm): 220 watts max.10 AWG (2.59 mm): 140 watts max.8 AWG (3.26 mm): 200 watts max.10 AWG (2.59 mm): 120 watts max.8 AWG (3.26 mm): 180 watts max.Mid-Zone 40–80' (12.2 m - 24.4 m)12 AWG (2.05 mm): 120 watts max.Far-Zone 80–120' (24.4 m - 36.6 m)12 AWG (2.05 mm): 100 watts max.Out There-Zone 120–160' (36.6 m - 54.9 m)12 AWG (2.05 mm): 60 watts max.810 AWG (2.59 mm): 100 watts max.8 AWG (3.26 mm): 160 watts max.

Installing the Luxor TransformerSummaryFor maximum light output and LED life, each luminaire should beprovided with 10 to 15 volts.Cable StatsLow-voltage lighting systems are typically installed usingdirect-burial-rated stranded cable. The most common cable usedis referred to as 12/2 AWG (2.05 mm) stranded cable. The sizeof cable used in wiring the lighting system will be determined bythe wattage load and length of cable run from the transformer tothe lighting fixtures.LUXORWatts shown are per 12 AWG (2.05 mm), cable. Installadditional cable runs as needed to complete project. Toincrease wattage maximum, run 8 AWG (3.26 mm) ordouble 12 AWG (2.05 mm), to the first fixture in the zone.Use a digital voltmeter to fine-tune circuits.Figure 5: Wiring example14-VoltCommonIt is very important to note that all low-voltage cable has amaximum rating. Overloading cable can create a dangeroussafety hazard, so be sure to choose the proper cable size foryour lighting system.Out There-Zone120–160'(36.6 m - 54.9 m)LED 110 watts max.14-volt tap9

Installing the Luxor TransformerLow-Voltage CableEach low-voltage lighting cable consists of two parts. One part ofthe cable is designated to carry the voltage load and is referredto as the Common lead. The Common lead is installed into one ofthe two COM terminal blocks. The other wire lead is installed intoone of the two lugs labeled 15V. Voltage is carried out from thetransformer to the fixtures via the Common side of the cable andreturns back to the transformer 15V tap via the other half of thecable, thus completing the circuit.Cabling MethodsWithin each cabling zone, you may utilize any of a number ofcabling methods. The primary objective is to minimize voltagedrop by installing the proper size feeder cable (home run) to eachzone, and to make sure each fixture on each cable run is receiving10 to 15 volts. Center feeding the “home run” (the main cable runfrom the transformer to the first fixture on the circuit) will helpminimize the voltage differential between the first fixture andthe last fixture on the cable run.Figure 6: Output terminal blocksConnecting Cables at the Terminal BlockTransformer terminal block: The Luxor controller includes twoCommon lugs, and two 15V lugs.Common Lugs: One conductor from each cable run coming fromthe lights to the transformer must be connected to one of thecommon lugs. The other conductor will be installed into the 15Vhot lug.Figure 7: Back of facepack showing SD card and reset button10
