8/30/141 Chronicles, 2Chronicles, Ezra,NehemiahThe Time Of TheProphetsThe Law, The Prophets and ThePsalms Categorize the Old Testament The Psalms is the general term used for theportion of scripture known as "the writings" ,i.e.Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song ofSolomon "'Then He (Jesus) said to them, "These are thewords which I spoke to you while I was still withyou, that all things must be fulfilled which werewritten in the Law of Moses and the Prophets andthe Psalms concerning Me." 45The Prophets In 1 and 2 Chronicles and the rest of the OldTestament the great men are not the kings orthe priests, but the prophets because theywere always calling the people to repentanceand revealing God’s will to man. When you compare all history and its writingsthere is nothing that compares to the writingsof the prophets of Israel These were not perfect men and sometimesfar from it, but were chosen by God for aspecific purpose by His graceThe Inspiration of the Prophets" .we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light thatshines in a dark place, until the day dawnsand the morning star rises in your hearts;20, that no prophecy ofScripture is of any private interpretation,21 for prophecy never came by the will ofman, but holy men of God spoke as theywere moved by the Holy Spirit."--- 2 Peter1:19-21"'--- Luke 24:44-451

8/30/14The Role Of The ProphetsThe Uniqueness of the Prophets The prophet's job was to call the people backto God and to the truth of God. It involvedwarning them of the consequences of theiractions and a call to repentance. At times itwas a message of God's plan for the futureof His Kingdom. They were men throughwhom God spoke His message of love forsinners, and warned them of theconsequences of their sins. The heart of theirmessage was God's promise of eternalredemption through the coming of JesusChrist the Messiah. They were sent from God. These men claimed tobe speaking from God and for God. "Thus saysthe Lord" () was a clear emphasis of theirpreaching Their message was related to history. It grew outof some historical situation in which they lived. The prophets were messengers of their times. The message can only be understood by seeingit in its original setting. You have to become astudent of biblical history to understand OldTestament prophecy. Prophecy is not always predictive. There weretimes when the prophet spoke only to his owngeneration without any special reference to thefuture. They warned the nation and its leadersof wrongs that needed to be corrected. Prophets did predict the future. Thesepredictions reveal God's purposes of grace tomen and ultimate fulfillment in Christ and Hiskingdom. There were conditional predictions, whichdirectly bear upon men’s responsibility toaction. A good example is Jonah's predictionthat Nineveh would be destroyed in forty days. All prophecy is centered in Christ. It is atestimony of Jesus Christ (Rev. 19:10). Heis at the center of prophecy because He isthe central theme of all the Scriptures. When reading prophecy in scripture alsokeep in mind the restoration of the Jewishpeople and the promises made directly tothem. The interpretation of prophecy needs toseek the literal and natural meaning of thewords. Seek the plain teaching of thepassage in light of its context and historicalsetting.2

The many discussions with Roger proved useful during the field work later. For example, we confronted the problem of finding very large sample sites which were suitable on other parameters. So we discussed how this should be tackled .
