BAC KS TAG E 5 W ITH . . .Ann DowdAnn Dowd has become a ubiquitous character actor as of late. After a stunning role in2012’s “Compliance,” Dowd has been popping up in everything from “Masters of Sex”to HBO’s “The Leftovers,” currently in its second season, and will appear in “Night Is aRoom” at Manhattan’s Signature Theatre, opening Nov. 3.By Molly Eichelwhom I went to school with. She was getting outof her limo and I remember thinking, What amI going to do? I can’t bear this another minute.A very strong calm came over me. It just said,“It’s OK. It’ll be fine when you get to your 50s.”It even gave me an exact age: 56. But I waslivid! What do you mean, 50s? But that’s whenthings began to change in a bigger way for me.What was your worst survival job?I once was going to sell American Frozen Foodsover the phone. I made my first call: “I’m sorryto bother you,” which is a bad choice if you’reselling food. This woman was older; she askedhow much it was and I said, “Honey, it’s a littlepricey, and you probably don’t need it.”How do you typically prepare for an audition? When I began to audition for theater, I would stutter, so it would go through their minds that thisperson is special needs. I have a special needsson, so I don’t say that with flippancy. So I thoughtI needed to get over those nerves. You need to getto those places where you’ve done the work, knowyou’re running the audition. It’s yours for now.Tell us about “The Leftovers.”We have the most wonderful time. I don’t knowof a man with more imagination than DamonLindelof or more skill than Tom Perrotta. Justhold on for dear life. The extraordinary thingabout it is that it makes complete sense. I’mwith Justin [Theroux], and I’m trying not to usetoo many superlatives because then you won’tbelieve me, but he’s a prince among princes. What do you wish you’d knownbefore you started acting? The big thing is don’t sweat it. I teach when I’mable to. I say to the kids, “Listen darling, youchose this for a reason; trust the gifts you’vebeen given. Keep the love affair alive.” When Iwas in my 20s, I was losing it in my apartmentin Chicago. I remember seeing the opening of“About Last Night,” starring Elizabeth Perkins,Which of your performances hasleft a lasting mark on you?Sister Aloysius in “Doubt.” I was raised Catholicand I have two aunts who are sisters. I knewthe world. Here’s a role that taught me so muchabout doing the job that is in front of you evenif you’re not suited for it. And when you make amistake, let the crack happen. [My character in]“Compliance,” unlike Aloysius, she should havecracked. She said, “You would have done thesame thing.” I loved her because you learn profound compassion for every creature. Photographed by Luke Fontana“TRUST THE GIFTS YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN.KEEP THE LOVE AFFAIR ALIVE.”4 backstage 10.29.15BACKSTAGE.COM

Built on the legacyof the Hollywood Professional School (which, after opening in 1935, ran for 50 years andboasts noted alums like Elizabeth Taylor andJudy Garland), the academy just opened itsdoors in September for its first year of students.“I think its time has come,” said WesleyStaples, Hollywood Performers Academy6 backstage 10.29.15advisory board director and former StudioTeachers union president. “There’s a movementin the entertainment industry toward homeschool and independent study. I find that 98percent of my children are now homeschool orindependent study, [but] they are coming moreand more unprepared and a little behind becausesometimes parents just aren’t up to calculus andFrench and Latin and chemistry and physics.”That’s where the HPA steps in. Staffed withdual-credentialed teachers, the school’s educators personally design curricula for theirentertainment industry–bound students, meeting their state’s guidelines for academiceducation by way of the classroom and independent study, while simultaneously offeringelectives in acting, singing, dancing, modeling, and more.“I’m interested in the academics—that theyknow that there’s a life after this and they haveto be prepared for it. Good education is insurance,” said Staples, who has over 40 years ofexperience teaching and monitoring youngtalents. Citing famous pupils like Jodie Fosterand Brooke Shields, he said, “They got goodeducations and they were happy about it.”In addition to ensuring performers’ academicsuccess, HPA enhances students’ lives sociallyand professionally. Unlike homeschooling, the academy has a locked-in network of likeminded performers. “What this does for kidswho are in the same kind of world is they get tonetwork—they all know which agents they’regoing to and which acting teachers, so they talkabout their acting classes,” said Staples. “Theyare interested in the same things. It’s reallygood for them.”Academy director and longtime actingteacher Dario Musumeci has also witnessed thebenefits of the new academy’s presence in theLos Angeles Center Studios, where series like“Shake It Up,” “Good Luck Charlie,” and “GirlMeets World” (for which Staples teaches) arefilmed. The proximity better prepares the academy’s performers for their posteducation lives.“Here in a studio lot, they get grounded veryquickly,” said Musumeci. “These kids are working professionals now. They’re working in theindustry and they want to get to that next level. We help them achieve their goals.”The Hollywood Performers Academy’s fourlocations—L.A., New York, Chicago, and SanFrancisco—offer year-round open enrollmentand have several scholarship and tuitionassistance programs in place for qualified candidates. “We’re not going to turn anyone awaybecause they can’t afford it,” said Staples. For more about the academy’s offerings, visithollywoodperformersacademy.com.
