BelongingAnd Adonai God said: “It is not good for the human being to be alone.I will make a helper corresponding to him.” (Genesis 2:18)BY RABBI DAN LEVINdlevin@tbeboca.orgFrom the beginning of time, it was allabout relationship.Think of an atom – the buildingblock of everything that exists. Themost simple atom is comprised of twopieces of energy that belong to eachother. More complex atoms have morecomplex systems of belonging. Thenatoms form bonds and join togetherinto molecules, molecules join togetherto create compounds, compounds joininto the core of our humanity is theneed to form relationships. The giftof Torah and Jewish tradition is howit teaches us to make those bonds ofrelationship holy.Everything about Jewish traditionguides us toward building bonds ofcommunity. We are required to cometogether for prayer and worship. Weare taught to gather with family andfriends to celebrate the festivals andJewish tradition guides us towardbuilding bonds of community. We are required tocome together for prayer and worship. We are taught togather with family and friends to celebrate the festivalsand our holy days. The entire community is obligated tocelebrate with bride and groom andto comfort those who mourn.Everything abouttogether to create everything. The entire universe is built onbonds of relationship. Everything andeveryone in our world is bound togetherin a cosmic web of interdependence.Nothing can exist if it does not belongto something else.It is not good for us to be alone. Builtour holy days. The entire communityis obligated to celebrate with brideand groom and to comfort those whomourn. When someone is ill, and hasto be kept apart, it is a mitzvah tovisit. But instead of bringing us together, our modern world conspires to pull usfurther and further apart. So many ofus work and live alone. We obsess overprivacy. We are fixated on individuality. We idolize those who make it on theirown. We stoically rebuff those whooffer help.Butthesesocietalpressurescontradict everything we know aboutwhat makes for holiness. God wants usto be in relationship. We are designedto belong. When we belong to a communityit’s like being plugged into an outlet. We derive power and energy fromthe bonds we share with people, andin turn we contribute our energy andspirit to the community. When we belong to each other, wedon’t simply discover each other. Inbelonging we learn to discover ourselves. This is what makes Temple BethEl a Kehillah Kedosha – a holycongregation. I am so excited that ournew facilities will foster the creationof sacred community. At the SchaeferFamily Campus you will find spacesthroughout the building where we invitepeople to sit and congregate. The roomthat links our sanctuary and our chapelis the “Mishpacha Room” – the familyroom, for we want our congregation tobe a family for everyone who belongs. Our multi-purpose space on the BeckFamily Campus is called “The KehillahCenter” because that is where we willcome together as a community to play,to learn, to worship, and to celebrate.Belonging is a benefit but also aresponsibility. The more of our spiritand energy we invest in our community, the stronger we become together.Your synagogue and your Jewishheritage belongs to you. You belonghere. You belong with us.ON THE COVER Members of our Adult Choirs, led by Michelle Auslander CohenJuly/August 2019 THE CHRONICLE3

A MESSAGE FROM THE TEMPLE PRESIDENTBelonging Means “Everyone Knows Your Name”BYMARK SUNSHINETEMPLE BETH ELPRESIDENTmsunshine@masunshine.comI often think of the 1980’s TV show “Cheers” whichwas set in a fictional bar located in Boston and wasfamous as a place “where everyone knows yourname”.In each of the 275 episodes, the “Cheers’”characters helped each other navigate life andimportant family, work and school relationships. The “Cheers” characters had many obviouspersonality flaws that, while exaggerated for TV,were common among all adults. But at “Cheers,” the characters and audiencelooked past the flaws to create an imaginaryneighborhood society that felt like a second homefor millions of viewers each week. However, unlike “Cheers” where engagement wasone dimensional (after all it was just a 30-minuteweekly sitcom about a bar), Temple Beth El providesnumerous meaningful opportunities for belonging.Beth El is a place for our children and teens tomake lifelong friends and grow up in a physicallysafe and emotionally protective environment. Many parents join parenthood groups whichhistorically have been the basis for enduringcongregant relationships. On the other hand, if meditation, music or thearts are your thing, Beth El provides world classopportunities for learning and expression. And, ifyou want to help the poor, advocate for social actionor advance the cause of social justice, Beth Elis your place. Other opportunities for adulttheeducation, spiritualty or religious expressionabound.I come to Beth El simply to have fun andmake friends and have found that Beth Elprovides a caring environment with many greatpeople who like me, “just wanna have fun”.I know that there is no shortcut to belonging toBeth El and no easy way to realize Beth El’s benefitswithout spending time engaging with others.Beth El is my own real-life version of “Cheers” – aplace where I belong and where everyone knows myname.Temple Beth El is similar – anyone can walk intobuilding but belonging requires effort. At “Cheers” anyone from the street could walk intothe bar, but belonging was different.Belonging to “Cheers” didn’t come cheap; itwas based upon the proposition that deep andmeaningful relationships require sustained effort, commitment and work.Temple Beth El is similar – anyone can walk intothe building, but belonging requires effort. My Heart is in the EastSCHAEFER FAMILYCAMPUSOPEN HOUSESFor Prospective MembersTours, schmooze and light bitesTuesday, August 27, 20196:30-8:00pm— or —Wednesday, August 28, 2019Noon-1:30pm4THE CHRONICLE The famous medieval poem, “My Heart is in the East” by Judah Haleviexpresses the ageless longing of the Jewish people for the land of Israel. With the exciting and dynamic resurgence in East Boca Raton, we arethrilled to welcome the community to our Schaefer Family Campusto experience this beautiful expression of Judaism for themselves.Invite your friends and neighbors to meet our clergy, tour the building, learnabout the gorgeous Judaic art installations and experience what makesTemple Beth El unique.
