WHAT MAKES EDUCATION AT WINFORD BILINGUAL PRIMARY SCHOOLSPECIAL?Our Vision & ValuesOur Goals To provide the highest qualitybilingual education within aglobal setting. To curate classrooms that arecarefully prepared environments, filled with a variety of learningexperiences designed to laythe foundation for a lifetime oflearning. To offer children social, emotionaland intellectual interaction attheir individual levels. To respect children as individuals. To encourage children to cultivateand empower their innate desireto learn through experiences aswell as from books. To promote each child’s joyof learning by combiningDutch Inspection standards,International Primary Curriculum,UK standards, and Montessoriideals. To give students the best possiblefoundation for secondary schoolchoices in the Netherlands orinternationally.Winford Bilingual Primary School is one of the onlytotal immersion, dual language primary schools in theNetherlands. We have created our own unique curriculumusing the Dutch national curriculum and the UK nationalcurriculum, both of which are then linked closely with theInternational Primary Curriculum (IPC). This well-roundedcurriculum means that the children are completely immersedin English and Dutch throughout every school day.Although Winford Bilingual Primary School is not officiallya Montessori school, in our approach to teaching andlearning, we draw heavily on the Montessori philosophy. Our classrooms are designed to encourage all our studentsto be independent and to move at their own pace asmuch as possible. In this space we try to encourage a loveof learning in each child and a curiosity about the worldaround them that we hope will last for the rest of their lives. We want our classrooms to be a reflection of the globalenvironment that exists within the Amsterdam community. We believe that children learn best when they are givenopportunities for success through interaction with their peersand the adults around them. We strive to promote a senseof community through mixed-age groups in each classroom, where children work, play and eat meals together. We believe that children should be respected as individualsand allowed to cultivate their innate desire to learn. Ourgoal is to provide the highest quality dual-languageeducation within a global setting, which prepares your childfor life beyond the primary classroom.OUR EDUCATIONOur Bilingual CurriculumWinford Bilingual Primary School is a Dutch school and the Dutch curriculum sits at the base of all that wedo. Building on this solid foundation we have created our own unique bilingual curriculum in which the UKcurriculum runs alongside the Dutch curriculum. We then use the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) tolink the Dutch and UK curricula together using thematic units. As a result of our approach, our pupils arecompletely immersed in English and Dutch throughout every school day and can switch easily betweenthe two languages. When we say ‘bilingual education’ we mean that children will have all of their lessons in both Dutch andEnglish. Throughout the school day the children will be completely immersed in both languages, and learnto switch easily between Dutch and English with their teachers and their friends. We call this approach ‘dual immersion’. The aim of our dual immersion education is to teach children to befluent in two languages, rather than simply competent.Competency means speaking a language well but with more formality and less familiarity than a native orfluent speaker. Competent speakers have to work harder to speak in this language rather than their nativelanguage. They can also find it more difficult to switch between languages. Fluency means speaking alanguage other than your first or native language with almost equal ease and accuracy. A fluent speakerfinds it almost as easy to speak in a second language as easily as their native language. Fluent speakerscan switch easily between the learned language and their native language.6WINFORD BILINGUAL PRIMARY SCHOOL GUIDE 2021 - 2022

Our ClassroomsWith class sizes of no more than 20 children, and two fullyqualified teachers per classroom, it is possible for us toencourage all our students to be happy, well-rounded, and tothrive in all aspects of their development, as well as receive ahigh-quality, dual language education. The Panda classroom is for only one year group, whereasall of the other classrooms are for mixed age groups. This isbecause the Panda classroom is a place where children taketheir first steps in formal education and we believe that thisshould be an enjoyable and supportive experience for them. The children come from a variety of different backgroundsand it is in this age group that we see the widest variety oflevels. In the Zebra and Giraffe classes there are two age groupstogether, and in the Eagle class there are three. The Eagleclass has these age groups combined because it is in here ingroup 6 that we start to prepare the children for the move intosecondary education. As a result, the way these groups arecombined changes depending on which secondary system thechildren are planning to move to, Dutch or English speaking. Our classrooms are separated byage group but in all the classroomswe take care to teach to the child’slevel rather than their age.The Group/Year classificationfor our classrooms are:Panda Class:for children aged 4 - 5,Dutch Group 1/ReceptionZebra Class:for children aged 5 - 7,Dutch Groups 2 & 3/UK Years 1 & 2Giraffe Classfor children aged 7 - 9,Dutch Groups 4 & 5/UK Years 3 & 4Eagle Class:for children aged 9 - 12,Dutch Groups 6, 7 & 8UK Years 5, 6 & 7How We TeachOur school is a vibrant and productive place. The daily schedules for each classroom vary dependingon the age group of the children but they all share the same goals – to create a stimulating environmentwhere children’s innate curiosity and their enthusiasm for learning are nurtured and encouraged. Children work in small groups, either with the Dutch teacher or the English teacher depending onthe lesson. Children learn how to switch between languages naturally and easily depending on thecircumstances. Our classrooms are carefully designed for each group to encourage, stimulate, and support learning. Allchildren’s work is proudly displayed in the classrooms and changes regularly with each term’s theme. Children receive plenty of attention, including the individual attention necessary to help them thriveboth academically, and socially and emotionally. We share progress with parents regularly through emails, parent meetings, and exhibitions anddisplays. Children are taught to be able to work and think independently.7WINFORD BILINGUAL PRIMARY SCHOOL GUIDE 2021 - 2022

English as a second language (ESL) or Dutch as a second language (NT2)We have many students who do not speak English or Dutch when they start with our programme. However, due to our teacher ratio of two teachers per classroom, the children are able to acquire bothlanguages quite easily. Each classroom has materials/lessons for children who are ESL, NT2 (NederlandseTweede Taal) or both as a second language. Our program is truly bilingual so children have the same setof opportunities to learn both languages at their own pace. We teach to each child’s ability and make thelanguage plans according to each individual child. Our TeachersWe are very proud of our teaching staff. All of our teachers are fully qualified and are native speakers ofeither Dutch or English. We have specialist teachers for art, music, and gym. As we are a small school ourteachers are able to know all of the children in the school and they work hard to motivate and understandall of the children they teach.HomeworkWe recommend that children should read 10-15 minutes each night (in either language). Children in theZebra, Giraffe, and Eagle classes will get homework each week. Homework is sent home every Friday.Children will receive both English and Dutch spelling revision as well as reading books. All work that issent home will be work that the children have already covered in class so they should be able to completeit independently. If a child goes on vacation for two or more weeks, the classroom teachers will provideextra homework in both languages.Field Trips/ExcursionsEach classroom arranges field trips several times per year. These trips are related to the theme that theclassroom is working on at the time. Each six-week term should conclude with a field trip or exhibition.Use of computers in the classroomModern society demands more and more the need for skills in the field of ICT. Digital learning resourcesalso have an important place in our education. Each classroom has a large touchscreen on the wall. Theteachers use these as a support to the lessons and the students themselves work with a book and aworkbook. We use computers to support the children via practicing of teaching materials, for visualizationand memorization of tables and writing assignments. Groups 3 to 8 work with Gynzy, a digital educationalprogram for all Dutch core subjects. Our students learn computer and information skills in the Giraffeand Eagle classes. They also learn to deal with the influence of the internet and social media in the medialiteracy component. This includes privacy, guidelines for the use of the internet and programming.BehaviourWe treat the children with respect and expect to be treated with respect in return. We teach the childrenhow to communicate with those around them in a way that is effective and positive. Children areencouraged to be independent and to understand that there are logical consequences to their actions. Our approach to behavior and discipline is drawn from the Positive Discipline method. Positive Disciplineapproaches children in a way that is respectful, kind, and firm. We believe that our approach helps tocreate children who are happy, capable, and kind.Bullying PolicyOur school is a safe place. We don’t tolerateaggression of any kind, including physical or verbalaggression in or outside of the classrooms. All of ourteachers work hard to facilitate good communicationbetween students. We have a detailed anti-bullyingpolicy which is available from the school on request.8WINFORD BILINGUAL PRIMARY SCHOOL GUIDE 2021 - 2022
