ERIECANALThe largest of the four canals that make upthe NYS Canal System, the Erie Canal wasbuilt between 1817 and 1825 and traversed363 miles from Albany to Buffalo. It was thelongest artificial waterway and the greatestpublic works project in North America. The canal put New York on the map asthe Empire State—the leader in population, industry, and economic strength. It transformedNew York City into the nation’s principalseaport and opened the interior of NorthAmerica to settlement.Equally important, the Erie Canal becamea central element forging our nationalidentity. Built with a combination of vision, determination, ingenuity, and hard work, theErie Canal solidified these central elementsof our American character. It’s here you’ll find engineering marvels, historic vessels and canal sites, and livelyMain Streets, along with great recreationalopportunities and hundreds of festivals andevents. As you travel, you’ll discover thateach region has its own distinctive flavor.Visit more than one, or go “end to end” toenjoy it all.MORE INFORMATION about exploring thecanal and its history as well as supporting thepreservation and heritage initiatives alongthe water, is available at ericanalway.org.MORE INFORMATION about navigatingthe canal system, can be found atcanals.ny.gov.28NEW YORK STATE CANALWAY WATER TRAIL GUIDEBOOK eriecanalway.org

Erie Canal–BuffaloErie Canal Harbor Development CorporationBUFFALOCommercial Slip, Canalside, BuffaloExplore New York’s second-largest city, onethat was transformed when the Erie Canalopened in 1825. As the western terminus,Buffalo became the hub of transportation, immigration, and commerce. The CommercialSlip, where the Erie Canal joined the BuffaloRiver, was the principal transfer point forcargo and passengers travelling between theupper Great Lakes and the Atlantic. The citythat rapidly grew up around the harbor cameto be called the “Gateway to the West” andthe “Queen City of the Lakes.” Grain, lumber, and ore from the middle of America weremoved from lake freighters to canal boats atdocks and elevators along the Buffalo River.By the early 1900s, an increasing portion ofthe cargo moved from ships to railroad cars. The Erie Barge Canal, built from 1905 to 1918for self-propelled vessels, shifted the point ofentry from Buffalo to Tonawanda, about 14miles downstream (north) along the NiagaraRiver. Today, boats heading to the Erie Canaluse the river between Buffalo and Tonawanda, passing through the federal lock at BlackRock on their journey. The City of Buffalo has transformed thehistoric western terminus of the Erie Canal intoCanalside, a vibrant and bustling combinationof public open space and docks, rewateredchannels, historical interpretation, recreation, outdoor entertainment, and new businesses.Launch your kayak, canoe, or stand-uppaddleboard at Canalside or another publicdock in the harbor area and paddle the InnerHarbor and Buffalo River. Erie Canal–BuffaloBuffalo River, BuffaloBUFFALO RIVERJoseph Dart invented the steam-poweredgrain elevator in 1842. He built the first oneon the Buffalo River to move Midwesterngrain from large lake freighters to canalboats for transport east on the Erie Canal. The idea caught on fast. By 1900, thewinding, eight-mile Buffalo River andconnecting creeks were lined with grainelevators. Today grain still comes by shipfrom the Midwest to Buffalo’s elevators, but it leaves on trains and trucks, notcanal boats. One of the best ways to see“Elevator Alley” is from a small boat.Paddlers on the Buffalo River mayencounter tugboats and the occasionallong, narrow lake freighter, but rowingshells, canoes, kayaks, and small powerlaunches are far more common today.34That smell of Cheerios emanates fromthe General Mills plant at the southern endof the Michigan Avenue lift bridge. Lookfor the fireboat Edward M. Cotter dockednear the Michigan Avenue lift bridge.Launched in 1900, she is a National HistoricLandmark, the oldest working fireboat inthe world. She’s still an important memberof the Buffalo Fire Department, fightingfires at properties that can only be reachedby water. The Buffalo River was declared dead in1967, a victim of extensive industrialpollution and uncontrolled sewage outflow. The Clean Water Act of 1972 started a longrecovery process that continues today. TheBuffalo River is now a much friendlier andsafer place for paddlers. Numerous put inpoints are available.NEW YORK STATE CANALWAY WATER TRAIL GUIDEBOOK eriecanalway.org

It drops 327’ in37 miles between the lakes, most of thatat Niagara Falls and the rapids immediately below. The river marks the borderbetween the U.S. and Canada. Theentrance to the Erie Canal at Tonawandais about twelve miles downstream (north)of Buffalo. The falls are about ten milesbelow that. From 1825 to 1915, the Erie Canal ranfrom Buffalo to Tonawanda in its ownhand-dug channel along the westernbank of the Niagara River. Today, theshipping channel runs in the river itself, with a short canal and the federal lock atBlack Rock to help boats pass the rapidsunder the Peace Bridge.Paddlers heading downstream towardthe Erie Canal have two options: they canhug the eastern (U.S.) shore and transitthe Black Rock Lock, or they can run theriver. The current in this area is swift anddeceptive, even when the surface appearsflat and calm. In addition, the area betweenBuffalo and the Erie Canal entrance isheavily used by commercial traffic andpowerboats. Know your abilities beforeattempting to paddle on the Niagara, keep a sharp eye on the weather, andexercise extreme caution at all times. If you choose to run the river, hug theeast bank and stay well east of StrawberryIsland, Frog Island, Motor Island (alsoknown as Pirates Island), and Little BeaverIsland. The river is split by Grand Island, with Niagara Falls on the western branchnot far beyond the northern (downstream)tip of the island. Stay to the east—youdon’t want to paddle against that current.eriecanalway.org NEW YORK STATE CANALWAY WATER TRAIL GUIDEBOOK35

Erie CanalTHE TONAWANDASGateway Harbor, TonawandaThe western terminus of today’s Erie BargeCanal is in the twin cities of Tonawanda andNorth Tonawanda. From the Niagara River, turn east and enter the Tonawanda Creek.Tonawanda Creek and the Erie Canal formthe border between the cities of Tonawanda,Erie County and North Tonawanda, NiagaraCounty. Although this section of the creek isplacid, Tonawanda means “swift runningwater” in the Seneca language, a reference tofalls and rapids upstream. At the height of40commerce on the Erie Canal, the Tonawandaswere one of the busiest ports on the GreatLakes. Midwestern lumber was unloadedfrom lake freighters and transferred ontocanal boats to be carried to building sitesalong the eastern seaboard. Woodworkingindustries, including boatbuilding and themanufacture of wooden carousel horses, once thrived in the “Lumber City” of NorthTonawanda.NEW YORK STATE CANALWAY WATER TRAIL GUIDEBOOK eriecanalway.org
