News From The HiveBy Skylar BlueI took a class on understanding conflict, last weekend. There is a lot for someone tolearn, especially if kindness is hard for them. Basically, kindness will help you to understand justwhere your boundaries are with others. If what youare saying is for no other reason than to offend another, than you better rethink your motives. If youare on the receiving end of the insult, knowing whoyou are, letting the insult pass, and being aware thatit was just an unkind act, helps you to not only let itgo, but not want to do that to another. Most angrystatements attest to how the other person feelsabout the situation, not about you. Fearful peopleare often angry at a lot of things and you mayjust happen to stoke their fire. You've got to thinkabout how much anger you want to be around. It canrub off, if you're too close. Give yourself distancefrom the things that stress you out, if you can. And ifnot, don't take it in too far and always remember toconsider the source.BridgeFest, this year, will have a survey to fill outconcerning the community needs. It really is important to take a couple of minutes to think about whatservices, programs, ideas, and interests you mighthave or like to see forthcoming from the BCC. Without your community input, there is no reason for anychanges to be made and without change there is noenergy or no growth. We all need the energy andgrowth so pitch in on this level! The 14th Annual BridgeFest presentsThe Blake StrettonMemorialMouse TrapCar RacesOfficial Rules and Regulations1.Forward momentum must be poweredby the spring of a mouse trap.2.Entry will be charted by distance up to28 feet and timed for the full distance.3.Must include insignia and a representation of the driver.4.Time trials to start at 3:00pm.5.Maximum weight 2lbs6.Maximum size 6” in any directionThe Green ThumbStretching the SeasonFor those of us who tilled, seeded andplanted a summer garden, now is thetime of abundant harvest; when all the hard workstarts paying off. Tomatoes are most likely still greenand growing but the beans, squash, cucumbers, onions, to name a few, should most likely be a big partof our daily diet. As August passes by, we still haveat least two good months of summer veggies. Ourfresh harvest does not have to end with that firstfrost. If we plan now, we can grow a fall garden thatwill keep fresh food on our tables through the heartof winter.Parsnips, rutabagas, leeks, endive, overwinteredbroccoli, kale, winter cabbage are a few fall/wintervegetables that can do well in our area, especially ifyou live below 1200 ft. elevation. Higher elevationgardeners may need to depend on their greenhouses for that extra warmth. Territorial Seed Company has a great variety of fall/ winter seed. Sowyour seed at the end of August using the largercelled 6-paks. Place in drain pans filled with 1/2 inchof water. This will help keep seedlings moist, evenon the hottest days. By middle to end of Septemberyou will have seedlings strong enough to place outin a garden bed. Add plenty of nitrogen like wellrotted manure before planting. Keep the plants wellwatered and mulched until the rains come. Timing isa little tricky in the fall, but don't give up. Those fallgreens are the most nutritious for our bodies andthere is nothing more satisfying than a harvest ofwinter greens for soups and stews. My green thumb came only as a result of themistakes I made while learning to see thingsfrom the plant's point of view. Showing Up – The BasicsTips for when your friend is illGeneral Guidelines: Don’t let your fear of sayingthe wrong things keep you away. Show up.1. Call before visiting.2. Be natural, say “How ya doing?” like youwould with any friend. Leave off the longface.3. Tell them about you and what’s going on withmutual friends.4. Take a mutual friend with you so the sickperson doesn’t feel obligated to entertainyou. They can lay back with closed eyes andenjoy the feeling of inclusion without the effort of maintaining their end of the conversation.5. When people are critically ill it is importantthat they know their life mattered and thatthey touched people. Help them rememberthe important things they’ve done.6. Your best gift is your presence. LISTEN, youdon’t have to talk or make it better. LEAVEYOUR AGENDA BEHIND!7. Don’t say: “Call me if you need me.” Insteadoffer something concrete and practical: “I’llbring dinner on Wednesday.” “I’m going toclean your bathroom on Saturday.”8. Call if you’re going to town to see if you cando any shopping for something they need.9. If there are lots of friends and family calling, asking for reports etc. offer to be the clearinghouse. This can take a tremendous burden off the family’s shoulders.10. Arrange/coordinate with friends, churchgroup, work group, etc. to deliver meals dailyof even weekly. Make sure people are picking up their pans! You want to lighten theload, not increase it.11. It’s okay to admit you are sad or scared but itisn’t about you. LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN.Sitting in silence is also totally okay.12. No matter how special your relationship, don’t stay very long. Five minutes of lovegoes a long way, 20 minutes is just tiring. From: Two Rivers Community Care Group:Neighbors Helping Neighbors along the upper MadRiver and Van Duzen Rivers.BridgevilleVolunteerFire CompanyNewsPlease have your address posted CLEARLY onyour gate or on HWY 36 for BVFC expedience whenthere is a Med Aid call or Fire call. Healthy Spirits Hello Bridgevaliens,My name is Sacrovandese the Wise, resident ofPlanet Fulofit. Lauri Rose, WWQ and IntergalacticGadfly, has kindly and courteously allowed me to doa special BridgeFest edition of my advice columnSacro’s Intergalactic Universal Daily Wisdom. There are less than twenty unique dilemmas in theknown universes and Shakespeare has covered allof them but, in a multiuniverse world, the variationsare endless and the solutions subtle. I am reallyreally old and really really wise, please heed my advice; it will improve your life. Guaranteed.Q: Dear Sacro, the Darsubean’s keep sabotaging my spacecraft. I have made five river landings at BridgeFest and I’m sure it’s the Darsubean’s doings. Captain All-Cracked-Up onEarth.A: Dear Cracked-Up, just buck-up and suck itin, you are a lousy captain, admit it and get onwith your life! Stop blaming other people andget your own act together or you’ll never makethe 75 yard-line. (This advice is relevant to allplanets, every planet has whiners and Buck-Upis a Universal Strategy that works no matterwhat planet you are on)!Q: Dear Sacro, my mother-in-law has a cat thatwants to sit on my computer keyboard all thetime. I can’t get any work done and my family isstarving. What do I do? Keyed-Up on QUERTY.Q: Dear Sacro, I’m kind of old and my childrenare taking advantage of me. Now I am goingcrazy. It’s probably my son-in-laws that want allmy stuff. What can I do? Maddened on PlanetSshakeLerA: Dear Keyed-Up, considering you are onQUERTY you can’t do a whole lot. Yourmother-in-law’s wishes are Law, but isn’t shestarving too? Or does she have Cache-Sackshe isn’t sharing? Perhaps you can elicit thecat’s cooperation? Or have you angered it somuch it won’t talk to you? Smear a little smokyberry on the keyboard, that should take care ofthe problem once she licks her paws. Just don’ttouch the keyboard yourself! For those of youon Planet Wwwyyphose with a similar problemsimply tap the beast’s ear each time it annoysyou, it will soon desist. Hopefully your ears willremain intact after she is done with you. Onplanet Earth you are stuck, earth felines are notoriously untrainable, sorry.A: Dear Maddened, surely one of your otherchildren can be your ally? Try a youngerdaughter, they are usually sympathetic. Justdon’t go wandering the Baarclean Plains, youcatch a cold in a platinum storm. For those ofyou in similar circumstances on Planet Zquit ifyou raise your Stimtus so it is bigger and higherthan your son-in-laws’ they are bound to backdown. On planet Nuumbra the Elder Judgesshould be consulted and their judgments followed, but still enlist your younger daughter’shelp. The Elder Judges can be swayed by filiallove. On Earth, try mediation and if that doesn’twork burn all your stuff. They may put you in anursing home but that’s where they were heading anyway so don’t let them get your stuff too!Q: Dear Sacro, I have a Doba Tree that won’tleave my garden alone. I think it is in love withthe Phora plant by the fence. Shaded-Out onBuetismoEarthlings, I hope this helps you see you are notunique in the Universe. Everyone has the sameproblems with just minor planetary variations. Goodluck on your flights and stop by the Starliner Lounge(antennae required).A: Dear Shaded-Out, no problem, move thePhora and your problem Doba will move too.Or, are you also in love with the Phora? Ormaybe the Doba? (You see Earthlings, only somany plots but endless variations). If it is youand the Phora take advantage of the Doba’spoor eyesight. Put a picture of the Phorasoaked with its scent in a secluded spot andwatch the Doba settle down to be quietly in lovewith the picture. But, be sure the Phora is notreciprocating the Doba’s love or your plan forromantic conquest will surely backfire.Fly High, Fly Long, Look GoodSacrovandese The Wise

Not only are we exposed to moresunshine then we need for vitamin D production butinsect stings, contact with chlorinated water in swimming pools, and reactions to various foods, plants, skin creams and sprays all take their toll.Dermatitis is a condition that means ‘skin inflammation’ and has many causes. If you get a patchthink about any new metals that you have worn, anynew soaps, detergents or body sprays you mayhave tried or any new foods you may have eaten ata cookout or summer pot luck. Sometimes it is acombination of something worn and somethingeaten that make the breakout occur. One other cause of dermatitis is a lack of essential fatty acids in the diet which you get from the oilsin seeds and the body turns into anti-inflammatoryprostaglandins. It is very important to note the distinction between good seed oils and the saturatedfats and artery blocking oils found in fried foods andfatty red meats. The bad kind actually blocks theformation of the anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. Inother words if you are getting your nice flax seed oiland topping it off with a big bag of greasy frenchfries, you have wasted the flax seed oil.The skin is one route the body uses to get rid oftoxins – think sweating – so drink lots of water andsweat to your heart’s content!A certain type of dermatitis, called acrodermatitis, responds very well to zinc supplementation as it iscaused by a deficiency of that mineral.Nutrition is involved at every stage of your skindevelopment. Starting with the dermis, collagen ismade when vitamin C converts the amino acidproline into hydroxyproline. No vitamin C, no collagen. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables, seeds andnuts and high quality proteins as found in fish arekey to a moist and flexible skin. The consumption oflots of water cannot be overemphasized. You skin keeps your insides in, protects you fromradiation and dehydration, and makes you lookgood. The entire surface is entirely replaced every20 days and its condition depends largely on whatyou consume. Why do aliens from Planet Zoid love to eat slugs?Because they don’t like to eat fast food.
