Our mandate is to promote research inthe mathematical sciences, to facilitate the training ofhighly qualified personnel, to enrich public awarenessof and education in the mathematical sciences, and tocreate partnerships with similar organizations in othercountries, with a particular focus on the Pacific Rim.PIMSPIMS has built an international reputation for excellenceand transformed the conditions of mathematicalresearch in Canada. Our innovative CollaborativeResearch Groups bring researchers together acrossgeographical and disciplinary distances. Ourpostdoctoral fellowships attract outstanding youngscientists to contribute to PIMS research programsfor two years, some of whom later become facultymembers at leading Canadian and internationaluniversities. Our international summer schools train thenew generation of mathematical scientists in emergingareas of mathematics and its applications. Our CommunityActivities, Entertainment &Shopping15Transportation19Being Part of PIMS20Contacts21MapsPIMS OVERVIEWPIMS is a partnership among a diverse and flourishingcommunity in support of the mathematical sciences::: The 8 PIMS partner universities (Simon FraserUniversity, the University of Alberta, the Universityof British Columbia, the University of Calgary, theUniversity of Victoria, the University of Regina, theUniversity of Saskatchewan and the University ofWashington) and the affiliated institutions (theUniversity of Lethbridge, University of Northern BritishColumbia and Portland State University).End:: The Government of British Columbia through theMinistry of Competition, Science and Enterprise;the Government of Alberta through the Ministry ofInnovation and Science; the Government of Canadathrough the Natural Sciences and Engineering ResearchCouncil of Canada.:: More than 350 scientists in our member universitieswho are actively working towards the Institute’smandate. Their disciplines include pure and applied1mathematics, statistics, computer science, physical, chemical and life sciences, medical science, finance, management and several engineering fields.PIMS Collaborative Research Groups (CRGs)CRGs are a unique model for the development ofmathematical sciences worldwide. Unlike traditionalthematic programs, which rely on gathering scholarsfrom one discipline in a single location for a periodof time, PIMS CRGs develop permanent research andtraining networks, establish lasting links across severallocations, provide mentorship for postdoctoral fellowsand graduate students, and enhance the profile ofCanadian researchers. Summer schools, workshops, distinguished visitors and ongoing seminars are integralto CRGs.PIMS CRGs have produced mathematical research ofthe highest quality, while simultaneously pioneeringemerging applications of mathematics to fields ofsocietal interest, all in a framework of sustainedcollaboration with lasting impact. The PIMS CRG program has had a significant impact onthe recruitment of new faculty in Canada. Furthermore, there is currently no other mechanism in Canada toenable young researchers to obtain the resources andnetworking capabilities to develop their full potential asinternational researchers: PIMS thus plays a pivotal rolein enabling Canadian mathematical scientists to forge aworld-wide position of leadership in strategic areas.Current PIMS CRGs:20 - Operator Algebras and Non-commutativeGeometry: 2009-201221 - Number Theory: 2010-201322 - Mathematics of Quantum Information:2010-201323 - Applied and Computational Harmonic Analysis:2011-20142

PIMS OVERVIEWPIMS International Graduate Training Centres(IGTC)PIMS is working towards creating IGTCs in strategicallychosen areas of mathematics. Each of these centreswill develop a specialized graduate program at one orseveral PIMS universities. The program may includetopical PIMS summer schools, annual researchsummits, new term-time courses, seminars, graduatestudent exchanges, and international visitors. In 2007 PIMS established an IGTC in MathematicalBiology based primarily at the Universities of Albertaand British Columbia. After 2012 a new IGTC is slatedto be opened in another strategic area.PIMS supports educationPIMS sponsors and coordinates a wide assortmentof educational activities for the K-12 level, as wellas undergraduate, graduate, women and aboriginalstudents. Many of the best PIMS research scientistsare involved in these activities.PIMS is dedicated to increasing public awareness ofthe importance of mathematics in the world aroundus. We want young people to see that mathematicsis a subject that opens doors to more than justcareers in science. Many different and exciting fieldsin industry are eager to recruit people who are wellprepared in this subject.Arriving at PIMS:: Publishing Pi in the Sky, a math magazine forhigh school students, to promote mathematics, increase the involvement of high school studentsin mathematical activities, and promote careers inmathematical i-skyIn 2005, PIMS began promoting numeracyand mathematical education in First Nationscommunities. We have established a partnershipwith the First Nations Education Steering Committeein B.C., and over the years, PIMS has organizedteacher training sessions, mentorship programs andsupport networks.Colleges and universities wishing to enjoy anaffiliation with PIMS (but not eligible for regularPIMS membership) may engage as PIMS EducationAssociates and be entitled to apply for PIMSfunding for appropriate education, outreach, andprofessional development activities in their region. To date, 7 BC colleges have become PIMS EducationAssociates: Camosun College, Vancouver IslandUniversity, Okanagan College, University of the FraserValley, Langara College, Thompson Rivers University, and Douglas College, and 4 in Alberta: ConcordiaUniversity College, Grant McEwan University, RedDeer College and Mount Royal University.23Get Acquainted With Your SpacePhones***Your PIMS or Math Department sponsorwill advise you as to whether you have anoffice in the PIMS building (WMAX).Your office will be equipped with a telephone.:: On-campus calls are 5 digits 2-xxxx:: Off-campus calls are 11 digits 9-604-xxx-xxxx:: For long distance within North America dial 8-1 and then your number:: For long distance outside North America dial 8-011 and then the country codeand then your numberYou can always ask for help if you need it!FaxingThe PIMS fax number is 604-822-0883.
