Product Data Sheet00813-0100-4026, Rev IAMarch 2012Rosemount 5400 SeriesInnovation that Delivers Clear Business ResultsTank HeightLevelDistanceMEASUREMENT PRINCIPLETimeThe distance to the surface is measured by short radar pulses, which are transmitted from the antenna at the tank top. When aradar pulse reaches a media with a different dielectricconstant, part of the energy is reflected back to the transmitter. The time difference between the transmitted and the reflectedpulse is proportional to the distance to the product surface, from which the level, volume, and level rate are calculated.Applications with, for example, turbulence, foam, longmeasuring ranges, disturbing objects, and low dielectricconstants can reduce the energy reflecting back, and in worstcase eliminate it completely with the result that no surface canbe detected. The reflection intensity can however be improvedby using a high performance radar with dual port technology, and thereby detect the surface in challenging applications.Storage and buffer tanksRADAR TECHNOLOGY BENEFITS Highly accurate and reliable direct level measurement withno compensation needed for changing process conditions(such as density, conductivity, viscosity, pH, dielectric, temperature, and pressure)Reactor and mixing tanksPipes, stilling wells, andunderground tanks5402 (26 GHz)5401 (6 GHz) Top down installation minimizes risk for leakages and allowsfor installation with liquid in the tank No moving parts and no re-calibration needed result inminimized maintenance Non-contacting technology is ideal for dirty, coating, andcorrosive applicationsSPECIAL 5400 FEATURESHigh Application FlexibilityLow frequency is preferred when measuring in vaporand foam. High frequency is preferred in most otherapplications due to greater mounting flexibility. Suitable for most liquid and slurry level applications andprocess conditions from challenging reactor tanks to storageand buffer tanks Low and high frequency models A wide selection of materials, process connections, antennastyles, and accessories Dual port technology to increase the signal strength andprovide measurement in challenging applications Can be isolated by valvesConeExtended ProcessConeSealRodAntennaHigh application flexibility2Bracketmount
