2IntroductionDonkey Kong Country Returns 3Dis a Nintendo 3DS remake ofDonkey Kong Country Returns forWii .The game has many new features,such as new levels and thebeginner-friendly New Mode (p. 3).

3Getting StartedSelect GameTo play from thebeginning, selectNEW GAME. Tocontinue, select agame file withyour save datausing / and then pressconfirm.toNew GameSelect the game mode you want toplay.New ModeThis is a new, beginner-friendlymode. In this mode you play with amaximum of three hearts (p. 8) andcan buy a larger variety of items(p. 12) than in Original Mode.Original ModeThis mode is the same as the Wiiversion of the game. You play witha maximum of two hearts. There are new levels in bothmodes.

Start GameChoose thenumber ofplayers. Two-player mode is played viaLocal Play (p. 13).View images,dioramas and moviesor listen to music.ExtrasOptions You will need tounlock these byprogressing in thegame.View or edit audioand controls options.You can choose tocontrol the game witheither the Circle Pador the Control Pad. The information in this manual isbased on the Circle Padcontrols.

4Saving and Deleting DataSaving DataYour game progress and items youcollect will be automatically savedto the game file you chose on theSelect Game screen. A rotatingicon will bedisplayed while the game issaving.Deleting DataTo delete save data, pressonthe Select Game screen and selecta game file to delete. To delete allsave data, press and hold simultaneouslywhen starting the game from theHOME Menu. Deleted data cannot berecovered, so be careful.Copying DataTo copy save data, presson theSelect Game screen, select thegame file you want to copy and anempty slot to copy it to.

Do not turn the power off, resetthe system or remove GameCards/SD Cards while saving.Make sure not to get dirt in theterminals. These actions couldresult in permanent data loss. Do not use external accessoriesor software to modify your savedata, as this can lead to aninability to progress or loss ofsave data. Any modification ispermanent, so be careful.

5Donkey Kong's MovesMove/CrouchSlideleft or right to move, anddown to crouch.JumpPress / to jump, or hold tojump higher. Jump onto an enemyand press / with the right timingto jump even higher.GrabHold down / to pickup barrels and otherobjects or to grab ontograss, ropes, vines, etc.Release / to throw the barrel orlet go of the object.Ground PoundUse / to pound theground. This can stunnearby enemies andreveal hidden items. Usethis move while clinging to grass topound a wall or ceiling. Some enemies cannot bestunned.

Barrel RollPress / while movingto roll and attackenemies. Press /while rolling for a longjump. Some enemies are invulnerableto the Barrel Roll attack.BlowPress / whilecrouching to blow. This isuseful for putting out firesor revealing hidden items.When with Diddy KongWhen you meet Diddy Kong (p. 8),he will jump onto Donkey Kong'sback. You will then be able to usethe following actions. In single-player mode, onceDiddy Kong is on DonkeyKong's back, you cannot makehim get down.Barrel JetHold / during a jumpto hover in mid-air for ashort time.

Kong RollRapidly press / whilemoving to perform theKong Roll attack. Some enemies are invulnerableto the Kong Roll attack.Carry Diddy KongWhen Diddy Kong iscontrolled by another player intwo-player mode (p. 13), youcan have him jump on DonkeyKong's back by getting closeto him and pressing / . If you have selected Control Pad controls inOptions, use /instead.

6Diddy Kong's MovesDiddy Kong is only playable in twoplayer mode. His basic moves arethe same as Donkey Kong's, buthe has some unique ones too.Barrel JetHold down / whilejumping to hover in theair for a short time.Peanut PopgunUse / to shoot thePeanut Popgun. The effect is different dependingon the enemy. Some enemiesare invulnerable to the PeanutPopgun.

Jump on Donkey Kong's BackTo jump on Donkey Kong'sback, press / . Press /again to dismount. If you have selected Control Pad controls inOptions, use / tojump on Donkey Kong'sback and / to getdown. The only move available tothe player controlling DiddyKong while on DonkeyKong's back is shootingwith the Peanut Popgun.

7Game MapsIsland MapThis is a map ofthe whole island.Select a world youwant to go to.World MapThis is a detailed map of a world.Select the level you want to play. The number of balloons (p. 9)and banana coins (p. 12) youhave collected will be shown onthe Touch Screen.① Level Name② Level: Cleared: Not cleared or only cleared inSuper Guide (p. 9): Locked③ Cranky Kong's ShopYou can purchase items (p. 12)here.

Here you can view aLevel Summary for all levels ina world, edit the game optionsor quit the game.

Start MenuSelect PLAY to startthe level (p. 8).Time AttackReach the goal as quickly aspossible. You need to clear a level atleast once to unlock this modefor it. Time Attack can only be playedin single-player mode.InventoryEquip items you have purchased.Go back to the Start Menu whenyou've finished to start the level. You can equip one item inOriginal Mode and up to threeitems in New Mode. In New Mode, equipped itemsthat have not been used can bere-equipped later in a differentlevel. You cannot equip some itemswhen playing via Local Play, orin certain levels.

8Game Screen① HeartsYou lose hearts when you takedamage. Donkey Kong's hearts are at thetop and Diddy Kong's are shownbelow.② Items Collected

About Diddy KongSingle-Player ModeDiddy Kong will appear when youbreak a DK Barrel (p. 11). He willjump onto Donkey Kong's backand help him out. Diddy Kong will lose hearts if hegets hurt. When he loses allhearts, he will disappear.Two-Player ModeDiddy Kong will be controlled byone of the players. He will join theadventure right at the start of thelevel.Pause MenuPressto open thePause Menu, where you canchange the game options orquit the level.

9Basic PlayDefeat enemies and solve puzzlesas you make your way to the goal.CheckpointsIf you lose a life afterpassing a checkpoint, youwill restart the level fromthe last checkpoint youpassed. If you complete or quit a level,or lose all your lives, you willstart from the beginning of thelevel the next time you enter it.

The GoalBreak the Slot MachineBarrel to clear the level.Your item reward dependson the symbol shown onthe barrel when you break it. If the barrel has thesymbol,the item you get will be random.Press / rapidly to increasethe quantity.Bonus StagesThere arehidden bonusstages insome levels.Get all theitems within the time limit toobtain a Puzzle Piece.Lives and BalloonsIf you lose all your hearts or falldown a pit, you will lose oneballoon and restart from thebeginning of the level or the lastcheckpoint.Game OverIf you lose a life when you don'thave any more balloons left, thegame will be over. Presstorestart with four balloons. In two-player mode, you willrestart with three balloons.

Super GuideIf you lose eight lives inone level in Original Modeor five in New Mode, thetutorial pig will appear.Get close to him andpressto have theinvincible Super Kongfinish the level for you.- While in Super Guide, pressto begin controllingSuper Kong.- The path to the next levelwill be unlocked if a level iscompleted in Super Guide.- Items obtained by SuperKong will not be saved.- Super Guide is only availablein single-player mode.

10 RidingMine CartsJump onto a cart to rideit. Press / to jumpand slidedown tocrouch.

Rocket BarrelJump into a Rocket Barrel andrapidly press / to start it. Thecontrols depend on the direction inwhich you're flying.HorizontalPress / to ascend.Release to descend.VerticalSpeed up with / .Release to return to theprevious speed. Slideleft or right to move.RambiBreak a container with theRambi logo and Rambi willappear. Jump onto hisback to ride, destroyingobstacles as you go. Use /while moving to dash. Press / to dismount. If youhave selected Control Padcontrols in Options, use / instead.

11 BarrelsDK BarrelThrow it to break it andrelease Diddy Kong.When it breaks, you willrecover all your hearts. Itcan also be used in the same wayas a regular barrel.Regular BarrelThrow it at enemies,special walls or obstacles.Barrel Cannons and BlastBarrelsJump inside to blast out in aspecified direction.Press/to blast out.Press / to blast out. Thebarrel will break afterwards.This barrel will blast you outautomatically.This barrel will blast you outautomatically and then itwill break.

12 ItemsItems Found in LevelsBananasCollect 100 bananas to obtainone balloon.Banana CoinsYou can use them to buyitems in Cranky Kong's Shop.HeartsA heart will refill one ofDonkey Kong's or DiddyKong's hearts.BalloonsRed balloons provide extralives.KONG LettersCollect all four in a level inone playthrough. Somethingnice will happen if you collectall KONG letters in a world.Puzzle PiecesCollect all Puzzle Pieces in alevel to unlock something inExtras.

Cranky Kong's ShopThe effects of equipped, usableitems last until you lose a life, orfinish or quit the level. In New Mode, if you lose a lifeand restart the level or continuefrom a checkpoint, the effects ofsome items (Squawks, HeartBoost, Banana Juice and CrashGuard) will be carried over.BalloonsThe number shows how manyred balloons you will get.SquawksSquawks will let you knowwhen you're near a PuzzlePiece.Heart BoostIt adds one extra heart toyour heart count.Banana JuiceProtects you from damagefive times in New Mode andten times in Original Mode.Map KeyIt opens a locked path on theWorld Map.

Green BalloonIt will prevent you from losinga life if you fall down a pit,but only once. It will be usedautomatically when you fallinto a pit.Crash GuardIt will protect your Mine Cartor Rocket Barrel from takingdamage twice.Portable DK BarrelTouch the Touch Screen totake this barrel out. You canuse it at any time when you'renot with Diddy Kong.Green Balloons, Crash Guardsand Portable DK Barrelsappear only in New Mode.

13 Two-Player Mode

Two-Player Co-op Mode(Local Play)Two players can play together asDonkey Kong and Diddy Kongusing Local Play.Please be aware that if you decideto play using wirelesscommunication, the User Name setin the Nintendo 3DS SystemSettings will be made visible andwill also be shared with otherplayers.You Will Need:- One Nintendo 3DS system perplayer- One copy of the software perplayerSetupOne player needs toselect Donkey Kongand the other, DiddyKong. Follow the onscreen instructions toproceed. The player who chooses DonkeyKong will be the host. Progresswill be saved to the host's gamefile. This software does not supportSleep Mode during Local Play,even when the Nintendo 3DSsystem is closed.

Losing Lives and RevivingIf a character loses a life,he will disappear from thelevel. Pressto use aballoon and he will returnfloating in a DK Barrel. Press /to get close to the other player'scharacter. The barrel will breakwhen it touches the othercharacter and you will be back inthe game. If the barrel carrying a characterfalls off-screen, the ballooncount will decrease by one.DK BarrelYou can also bring a characterback without using a balloon,by breaking a DK Barrel foundin the level.When Both Players Lose aLife.If both players lose a life at thesame time or a player loses a lifewhen the other player's characteris still in a barrel, two balloons willbe used and both players will bereturned to the beginning of thelevel or the last checkpoint.

When SeparatedIf the players become separated asdescribed below, the player thatwas left behind will beautomatically warped to the otherplayer after the countdown.- When the characters becomeseparated and one is off-screen.- When one character enters aBarrel Cannon or Blast Barrel.
