4.8 Shepway’s Coast4.8.1Description4.8.1.1 Shepway’s coast starts at TR243371 at the Warren just to the northeast ofFolkestone. It extends for 40 km to end at TR007177 to the east of Jury’s Gap.4.8.1.2 Approximately 17 km is on PRoWs and a further 5 km on a cycle route. Theremainder is de facto access. 6km of the PRoW is across Lydd Ranges where access islimited. At the time of the survey a further 2 km was closed/restricted due to sea defencework. Apart from the Ranges there were no restrictions to accessing the coast.4.8.1.3 The scenery is initially the seaside towns of Folkestone and Hythe. Folkestone has afishing harbour. From Hythe the land is flat with the Romney Marsh on the landward side. There are holiday villages at Dymchurch, St Mary’s Bay, Littlestone-on-Sea and Greatstoneon-Sea to Dungeness with its unique shingle landscape and dominant power station. There are two firing ranges at Hythe and Lydd.4.8.1.4 From the start, the majority of the route is along promenade past the harbour town ofFolkestone to Hythe and then from Dymchurch to Greatstone-on-Sea. From Greatstone toDungeness it is possible to walk along the beach but the easier route is along the road.At Hythe Ranges the route is along a shingle sea defence bank and at Lydd Ranges there isno option but to walk across soft shingle. Access to the coast is limited to some days atweekends when firing is not taking place.4.8.1.5 There are two coastal parks at Folkestone – the East Cliff & Warren Coastal Parkand the Lower Leas Coastal Park.121

Shepway’s Coast4.8.2The Route4.8.2.1 The Warren to DymchurchThe start is at TR243371 at The Warrenjust to the northeast of Folkestone. Thereis a short stretch of sandy beach leadingto Copt Point. These lead to a grassed area around theMartello Tower. It is not possible to walk around the pointwhen the tide is in but there are paths andsteps up from the beach.122

Shepway’s CoastThere are several paths down to the seabut not along the shore. At TR241365there is a tarmac path. The route follows roads past the HotelBurstin. To the old Rotunda site at TR100350where there is access to the shinglebeach. This leads to steps down at TR238364 toanelevatedpromenadealongFolkestone’s sandy beach. At the end of the site there is a car parkleading to a promenade. This progresses to the harbour123

Shepway’s CoastThe promenade progresses along thebottom of The Leas. And SeabrookIt goes past SandgateThe promenade ends at the FishermansBeach at Hythe at TR158340.124

Shepway’s CoastThis short stretch of shingle beach leadsto Martello Towers which mark thebeginning of Hythe Ranges. The Dymchurch Redoubt is at the far endof the ranges. Here the exit is confusing as the pathleads to locked gates. The only way out isacross a slippery sloping apron on theseaward side of the Redoubt leading to aconcrete ramp. This would not be possibleat high tide. These ranges are busy and it is onlypossible to walk along the coast whenfiring is not taking place (on this case aSunday). There is an easy clamber over afew rocks to a broad shingle track alongthe top of the sea defences.125

Shepway’s CoastOn the other side of the Redoubt atTR129320 there is a very broad concretepromenade along the new sea defences toDymchurch.126

Shepway’s Coast4.8.2.2 Dymchurch to Jurys Gap127

Shepway’s CoastAt Dymchurch, sea defence constructionwork was still going on and there weretemporary closures to the promenade. At TR091272 the promenade narrows andfollows along the top of the shingle beach. The beach was firm sand and easy to walkon.Access to the promenade was possiblewhere work was not going on.128

Shepway’s CoastIt ends at LittlestoneTR086249becomes grass.andIt is heavy going across the beach andeasier to walk behind the fishermen’s’huts. This leads to a sand beach without apromenade. It is possible to walk along thebeach or dunes from Littlestone toGreatstone but it is slow going. The grass leads to shingle.129

Shepway’s CoastDungeness Point is a large open area ofshingle. There is no problem keeping tothe coastline other than it is heavy goingover the shingle. There are PRoWs.The option is to follow the coast roadwithout views of the sea.At TR087166 there is the option to walkalong a concrete road behind the powerstation or along the top of a hugemanmade shingle bank. From Greatstone to The Pilot is a verywide shingle beach which is hard walkingand it is easier to continue along the roadthough it is well back from the sea. Theroad turns inland at The Pilot. The road stops at the limit of the powerstation complex and the shingle bank getssmaller.130

Shepway’s CoastThere is no option but to progress acrosssoft shingle to the start of the LyddRanges at TR064167.Again it is only possible to walk when firingis not taking place (again on a Sunday)and it is heavy going because of theshingle.Going around the seaward side of thewatch tower the route is along the shinglebeachThe end of the Kent coastline is atTR007177 to the east of Jury’s Gap.131

Shepway’s Coast4.8.4Access Issues4.8.4.1 Copt PointTR2431 toTR2393631 kmThis is not really a problem but consideration should be given to the best route across thisarea and improved waymarking.4.8.4.2 Hythe RangesTR156338 to TR1303213 kmAccess obviously needs to be limited to when firing is not taking place but notices indicatingwhen access is possible would help. Also, a gate in the security fence at the DymchurchRedoubt end is needed.4.8.4.3 Lydd RangesTR065166 to TR0071776 kmAs above for Hythe Ranges. However, there is an information board at the far end at Jury’sGapatTQ991179.132
