Team Leader, Generous Giving and StewardshipGenerous Giving teamWith its network of parishes covering the country, the Church of England plays an active rolein national life, bringing an important Christian dimension to the nation as well asstrengthening community life. The Church of England is arranged geographically into 41dioceses, each under the care of a Bishop, and covers every part of England. The Diocese of York is a family of 607 churches and 125 schools in 470 parishes, whichextends from Middlesbrough on the River Tees to Hull on the River Humber, and from theeast coast of Yorkshire about as far west as the A1 road. Led and guided by the Archbishopof York, Dr John Sentamu, our vision is to be a family of Generous Churches Making andNurturing Disciples. The diocesan office is located at Clifton Moor, York. The teams operating from there andacross the diocese provide services to support the mission and ministry of our churches, parishes and schools. We are currently working through a Diocesan Strategy that focuses onour three goals: reaching those we currently don't; moving to growth; and achievingsustainable finances. The Team Leader for Generous Giving and Stewardship’s core task will beto implement this third strand of the strategy. The ChallengeOur emerging strategy for 2018 to 2022 is a strategy for growth. We expect to see growthresulting from the initiatives under our goals to ‘Reach those we currently don’t’ and ‘Move togrowth’. We will also create the capacity for growth in a variety of other ways such asincreased central support for parish development and mission, and new patterns of ministry. Some of the new work under our ‘Reach’ goal won’t be self-sustaining for a considerableperiod, particularly in the case of work in deprived areas. As a result we will create a Diocesethat, in being more focused on mission and growing the Kingdom, is more expensive to run,so we must look to the generosity of our Diocese to help us achieve overall sustainability.Overall we need to significantly increase income flowing into parishes to support localmission and ministry and, from there, into the Diocesan Common Fund . We know that it willtake time to achieve an increase on the scale that we need to turn around declining income, and, at a Diocesan level, we will be able to draw on reserves through a transitional period tofund the strategy. Two thirds of the income in the Common Fund is derived from parishcontributions which are, in turn, predominantly financed by the regular giving of ourcongregations. In 2015 the Diocese was bottom of the 3rd quartile of the Church of Englandleague table for regular giving. Our target is to move up 2 quartiles – to the 1st/2nd quartileboundary – a 35% increase in regular giving by individuals to parishes.England. Registered Charity number 244976
