Home I Table of Contents I 1-299 I 300-599 I 600-857 I IndexesPREFACETen years after the publication of the secondedition of journeysongs, it became evidentthat a new edition of th is popular andwell-received hymnal was necessary. Themost compelling reason for a third editionwas the introduction of the new Englishtranslation of The Roman Missal in November2011. With the new text for the Order ofMass, along with the need for new musicalsettings of the Mass, plus the growing numberof new songs published in these last tenyears, the older edition of journeysongsclearly needed a thorough revision. As a resuIt, we are proud to offer journey-songs:Third Edition as our response to this need, especially for those parishes that have cometo expect and rely upon OCP's long-establishedtradition of a perfect balance between newmusic and a well-known, stable repertoire. The Order of Mass is shown, as required, with the newly-translated chants from TheRoman Missal. In addition, OCP offers nineMass settings in a variety of musical stylesand designed to meet various parish needs:Latin and Englishchant, traditional, multiculturaland bilingual, and contemporary. Followingthese, a section of additional service musicprovides more possibilities for variousmoments during Mass.Similar to the second edition, the Rites ofChristian Initiation, the Order of ChristianFunerals, Eucharistic Exposition andBenediction, as well as Morning and EveningPrayer are given here. The Psalms and Canticlessection was also thoroughly analyzed andupdated to give a good selection of psalmsfor all the most important Sundays andfeasts. Bilingual English/Spanish psalmodywas chosen for those occasions when theentire parish community might gather toworship, such as during Holy Week, or forweddings, funerals, and the RCIA.In deciding which hymns and songs to carryover from OCP's current hymnals, the hymnalcommittee looked at both previous editionsof journeysongs and Glory & Praise: 2nd Editionto make sure that important repertoire fromthese hymnals was not omitted. Therefore, the best-known music of the St. Louis Jesuits, the Dameans, Michael Joncas, Carey Land ry ,Bernadette Farrell, Christopher Walker, BobHurd, and many others, which has formedthe basis for numerous parish musicprograms over the last thirty years, has beenretained. To supplement this, a large numberof hymns and songs new to journeysongswas drawn from music that has becomeknown and loved in OCP's missal programsover the last ten years, including a substantialnumber of songs from the popular Spirit &Song repertoire. As in past editions of journeysongs, a sturdyplastic pocket is attached to the inside backcover of the third edition to allow forcustom-made parish music supplements, ifdesired, or for a variety of music supplementspublished by OCP for several specializedgenres: Latin-language chants, Mass settingsand hymns, Spanish-language songs and servicemusic, and youth-oriented contemporarysongs. The usual accompaniment editions arealso provided: keyboard/vocal, guitar/vocal,assorted C and B-flat instrument parts forthose hymns and songs that have them, a CDand digital recording library, and a hardboundChoir/Cantor book. For liturgy preparation,in addition to the complete set of indexesprovided in the back and in the accompaniments,OCP now provides song suggestions for thisedition in its popular Today's Liturgy magazineas well as on liturgy.com.journeysongs: Third Edition is also availablein an edition with the complete three-yearcycle of Lectionary readings. Music for theresponsorial psalms and gospel acclamationsin that edition is taken from OCP's popularresource Respond & Acclaim, which may bepurchased each year as needed or may beordered as a standing subscription. We must express our gratitude to the musicadvisory committee for journeysongs: ThirdEdition, whose recommendations wereessential to the final content of this book:Mr. Frank Brownstead, Sr. Jeremy Gallet, SP,Dr. Jennifer Pascual, Sr. Mary Jo Quinn, SCL,and Dr. Elaine Rendler-McQueeney.Additional recognition is once again given toAmanda Weller and her editorial team, withoutwhose assistance and hard work this hymnalwould not have been possible.journeysongs: Third Edition Hymnal Committee:Randall DeBruyn, D.M.A., ChairBarbara Bridge, B. In a similar manner, a bar magnet is a source of a magnetic field B G. This can be readily demonstrated by moving a compass near the magnet. The compass needle will line up
