Nelson Mandela departed this earthly life on December 5, 2013 at the age of ninety-five but hisspirit continues to live on in the hearts of many across the world. The life of Bro. Mandela is one ofthe greatest stories of our lifetime. “Madiba” as some affectionately called him was born July 18, 1918in the Republic of Transkei which is in southeastern South Africa1. Bro. Mandela spent much of hisadult life fighting against apartheid in South Africa. On June 12, 1964 he was sentenced to life in prisonfor sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the white government of South Africa 2. Bro. Mandela wasreleased from prison on February 11, 1990 after serving twenty-seven years3.Later in the same year after his release Bro. Mandela went on a tour raising awareness about the fight against apartheid. He came toUnited States where he was celebrated in several major cities. He stopped in Atlanta, GA in June of 19904. During his stay he metM.W. Bro. William C. Parker Jr. who was at the time the Grand Master of the M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge of North Carolina.Even though he was a visitor in the state of Georgia the North Carolina Grand Master proceeded to make Mandela a Mason“at sight” to be later affiliated with a lodge under the jurisdiction of North Carolina.5 He also dubbed Bro. Mandela’s second wife,Winnie, a member of the Order of Eastern Star as well under the jurisdiction of North Carolina.6South Africa’s held its first democratic election for a president on April 27, 19947. Bro. Mandela won the election and his inaugurationwas on May 10, 19948. After he served one term and he remained an activist until “retiring” in 2004 because of his health 9. After2004 he only made occasional public appearances. He died on December 5, 2013 after a long bout with a respiratory illness. 10 In thedays leading up to his funeral Bro. Mandela’s life was celebrated by many including world leaders to ordinary people who were inspiredby his life. His memory across the world shall be everlasting as an evergreen tree.“Until then, dear friend and Brother, until then, farewell”(Special thanks goes to W. Bro. Damajo Smith, Asst. By 1900 she had becomea charter member of the NationalAssociation of Colored Women andJohn Brown's Women's ReliefCorps, President of the Ida B. WellsClub and other local and nationalcivic organizations. She was also thesitting Worthy Grand Matron ofEureka Grand Chapter during theParis Exposition. Theseaccomplishments provide evidenceto the fact that she was a lady andleader of the highest caliber andconfirm her ability to hold her ownwith any audience.Quick Notes on aPast Worthy GrandMatron withInternational ImpactsSubmitted byRight Worshipful BrotherDaryl L. One of our sisters wasnot only a Past Worthy GrandMatron (1899) and the first GrandTreasurer (1889) of Eureka GrandChapter Order of the Eastern Starbut also the Past Most Ancient GrandMatron of the Most Ancient PrinceHall Grand Court Heroines of Jerichowhen the Grand Lodge initiallyadopted the Grand Court in 1877.She was also known by two nameswhich still resonate in the minds ofmany citizens today. Internationally, she was known as “Aunt Agnes” butnationally she was known as the firstnon-fictional “Aunt Jemima”. She isnone other than Sister Agnes BerryMoody. The early life of Sister Moody is yetto be uncovered but her efforts inher latter years were remarkable. At 60, she ran the American CornKitchen which was one of the mostpopular features at the U.S.Agriculture Department's Buildingduri ng t he 1900 Uni ve rsalExposition. The purpose of theexhibit was to promote the use ofAmerican corn and cornmeal forcooking. Despite being cast in therole of “Aunty” or kitchencaretaker, she was described as the“presiding genius” by the VirginianPilot and numerous publicationsacross the globe touted her skills incooking and promotion. Herpopularity skyrocketed as a resultand made her appearance at specialaffairs during the exposition to behighly desired. The MinneapolisJournal reported that she was"entertained and fed by royalty" notonly for her efforts at the expositionFor America, her efforts at theexposition helped to boost totalexports to foreign countries. From1891 to 1895, it is estimated thatAmerica exported more than 50million bushels of corn and 166million bushels of wheat. By 1900,these totals increased to more than176 million bushels of corn and nearly180 million bushels of wheat. Herrepresentation and promotion ofAmerican corn produced greatdividends for the country. For theseefforts, she was awarded a gold medalby the U.S. Agriculture Departmentupon her return.Sources: "Agnes Berry Moody", TheWeekly Northwestern Miller,Chicago, Illinois, 12/19/1900, page1198 "Mrs. Agnes Moody", ChicagoTribune, 4/10/1903 Statistical Abstract of the UnitedStates, U.S. Government PrintingOffice, 1920, P. 543 Special thanks to Sister SybilMoses, Princess Hager #7, PhyllisSociety for presenting “ResearchAgenda” at the 2013 PhylaxisSociety session.

As a man, Hall wasdedicated to the principles outlined by the United StatesConstitution and worked to secure those rights for allcitizens. A volunteer in the Revolutionary War, he joinedmore 5,000 other Blacks fighting for the full freedomthat still alluded them after the war in New England. Indoing so, Hall filed petitions against abuses on Free Menin the North and petitioned the Massachusetts StateLegislature to abolish Slavery for ten consecutive yearsuntil it was finally abolished. Though times have changed,Prince Hall Masons of today must work to ensure thathis example is never forgotten and should rememberAmericanism Day as described by the late Past GrandMaster of Arkansas, Howard Woods. He stated that “asthe Christian has a revival, the Muslim has a pilgrimageto Mecca, Prince Hall Masons celebrate Prince HallAmericanism Day to revive the spirit of the Craft. It is atime for Masons to take stock of their lives, renew theirfaith in God, Country and Fraternity and his duty tomankind.
