Following graduation, she completed a small-animalinternship at a large referral hospital in New Jersey. Dr. Breicknerremained in small-animal private practice until beginning aclinical pathology residency at the University of TennesseeCollege of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. During this time,she performed research with adult equine mesenchymalstem cells and acquired skills in cell and tissue culture andimmunofluorescence techniques, as well as RNA and proteinextraction. Dr. Breickner attained board certification through theAmerican College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2011 and joinedIDEXX the same year.Dr. Corn received her DVM from The Ohio State University (OSU)in 2000 and was an associate veterinarian in small-animalpractice for 2 years before returning to OSU for a clinicalpathology residency. She worked as a clinical instructor at OSUafter completion of her residency. Dr. Corn became a diplomateof the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2005 andjoined IDEXX at the Worthington, Ohio, laboratory in 2006.Andrew Burton, BVSc (Hons), DACVPClinical PathologistArea(s) of interest: cytology, hematology, lymphoproliferativedisordersDr. Burton graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2007with First Class Honors and numerous awards for studentexcellence. He completed a rotating internship at QueenslandVeterinary Specialists in 2008 before working at University ofCalifornia, Davis, as a staff veterinarian and then as an intern inemergency medicine and critical care. It was as an emergencyveterinarian that he developed his interest in evidence-basedmedicine, leading him to pursue residency training in clinicalpathology, also at UC Davis. He earned board certificationin 2014. Dr. Burton has published extensively on diagnostictesting and interpretation as well as on neoplastic, infectious,and traumatic disorders in companion, laboratory, and wildanimal species. He was the recipient of the ASVCP YoungInvestigator Award in 2013 for his work on canine stored bloodmicroparticle detection. He has considerable lecture experiencein veterinary curricula and in local, national, and international CEmeetings. His research focus is in hematology and electrolytedisturbances, and he has a passion for cytopathology. Herecently finished writing a textbook, Clinical Atlas of Small AnimalCytology, which will be available in late 2017. He is a member ofthe ACVP and ASVCP.Dean Cornwell, DVM, PhD, MT (ASCP)Regional Head of Clinical PathologyArea(s) of interest: cytology, hematology, immunology,molecular diagnosticsDr. Cornwell attended Fort Hays State University and received aBS in medical technology prior to receiving his DVM from KansasState University (KSU) in 1990. He practiced in Kansas City for1 year before beginning his clinical pathology residency at KSUin 1991. Dr. Cornwell joined IDEXX as a clinical pathologist in1997 and completed and defended his thesis in physical genemapping and received his doctorate in 2001. He became aregional manager in 2000 and was named western head ofclinical pathology in 2014. He is a member of the polymerasechain reaction (PCR) technical team, Medical Review Board, andthe Reference Interval committee. He was instrumental in drivingIDEXX to become the premier provider for veterinary moleculardiagnostics and continues to give pathology, molecular, andmedical guidance.Rick L. In 2007, she pursued a residency inclinical pathology at the University of Florida and received boardcertification from the American College of Veterinary Pathologistsin 2010. She joined IDEXX in April 2011. She enjoys teaching andwhen not at work, she enjoys long-distance running, baking, andspending not-so-quiet time at home with her young children andhusband.Dr. DeNicola completed his DVM in 1978 and his PhD in 1981,both at Purdue University. For more than 20 years, he servedas educator in clinical and surgical pathology. In addition, hedirected the primary clinical pathology laboratory as well as thecytology and surgical pathology service at Purdue’s veterinaryschool. He also ran a private pathology service for 15 years. Since 2001, he has been an adjunctfaculty member in the clinical pathology curriculum of theveterinary technology program of the Community College ofDenver and has also served on their advisory board. He was board certifiedby the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2017 andbegan working for IDEXX the same year. In his spare time, Dr.Deravi enjoys spending time with his schnauzer mix Tillie andpracticing stand-up comedy and improv. He tries his best tostay fit by doing Zumba and interval boxing.
