Big Bob, Contestants, RobinThis week in Santa Rosa, CaliforniaThere will be one 15-minute intermissionDirectors NoteSMILE is a musical about beauty pageants. It is about winning and losing. It isabout what is right and what is wrong, and it is a satirical look at everythingsociety finds important in a winner (as one of the contestants learns, much toher dismay, they don't necessarily want photos of runners up).SMILE opened on Broadway with much hoopla in December of 1986. Youmight recall60 Minutes following the development of the show throughout it'sauditions, out-of-town tryout period, and opening. The production was greetedwith mixed reviews, although in retrospect many critics consider it among thefinest musicals to come out of the 80's and one of the best adaptations of amovie screenplay to the musical theatre stage. The show is an old-fashionedbook musical, although many of the best songs come within medleys."Disneyland" has been recorded 16 times (as best we could research it). Dueto theater politics, the show closed prematurely (and several of the creativeteam were blackballed from Broadway for almost a decade), resulting in nocast album being recorded and stunned silence on stage January 4th, 1987. Isaw the original cast production on Broadway on Saturday January 3rd. Neither I, the cast, nor the cheering audience had any idea it would be the second-l]@nto last performance .Smile (though your heart is aching).
