Pastor’s columnFinance ReportAbundant Joy, Overflowing Generosity“Now you excel in everything: in faith, inspeech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in love. So we want you to excel also inthis generous undertaking.” - 2 Corinthians 8As we celebrate God’s abundance andrespond with overflowing generosity, we arealso called to reflect on how we can be betterstewards of our gifts of “time, talent andtreasure.”As Presbyterians, this is what we believeBen Paroulekabout stewardship:Stewardship is about making choices, as individuals and in community. Itis more than giving money to the church. Stewardship is about being faithfuldisciples, caring for and managing all that God has given us.Stewardship is not just one part of Christian discipleship; it involves everyaspect of life in all the stages of life.Stewardship is the grateful response to God’s grace and goodness. Itrequires a consideration of how ourchoices affect us and others, ofhow we can be good caretakers ofthe created world, and of how wecan best serve God as disciples ofChrist. We thank you for prayerfullyconsidering your pledge to God’swork at Valley CommunityPresbyterian Church and ourministry to our community andworld. Please plan to return yourpledge card on or beforeNovemb er 4, C ommit mentSunday. On that day we will join in a Harvest Brunch and celebrate theabundance with which God has blessed us. Together, in gratefulthanksgiving, we will make commitments to God for the “abundant joy andoverflowing generosity” we have each received.Operations during Septembercontinued to show some encouragingresults. Last spring Session passed abalanced budget for 2012. Howeverthe YTD budget for nine monthsplanned for a loss of 39,100. Theactual YTD loss was 39,700, adifference of only 600 anddemonstrates the efforts of all programmanagers to minimize expendituresand stay within budget. The actualoperating results for September were apositive 20,700 which was slightlyworse than budget. Generally, adultgiving continues to needimprovement, but net operations forall program areas except facilities andmission are under budget throughSeptember 30, 2012.Obviously, in order to achieve breakeven operations by year end, adultgiving must improve by 26,500. Wethank members and non-members fortheir financial support during 2012.Again, we prayerfully request thatyou remember Valley in your financialplanning and thank everyone for theircontinued support of the mission andprograms of Valley.Lyle Chadwick, TreasurerGamble LibraryBook Discussion Group: The combined November/December meeting of the Book Discussion Group will be onFriday, December 14. Learn about women of Ecuador at DFW November 18Those who attend Dining for Women will learn more about the women ofEcuador at the November 18 meeting at 11:30 in the Fireside Room. The featured group this month is The Pachamama Alliance, which isorganized to empower indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest topreserve their lands and culture and, using insights gained from that work, toeducate and inspire individuals everywhere to bring forth a thriving, just and sustainable world. The mission of Jungle Mamas, a project of The Pachamama Alliance, is to empower the indigenous women andcommunities of the Ecuadorian rainforest to ensure safe birthing and the health and well being of the Achuar people. This is based on the experience of women's health and education as the keys to cultural preservation and protection ofthe Amazon rainforest.Marilyn Tuffs has been attending the group and adds her experience: “I am a member of the Dining For Women groupand was reminded recently how important it is that we participate in something that helps others. I would encourage allof us to mark our calendars and join the potluck group (ordinarily the third Sunday at 11:30 a.m.) to learn about theareas where a ‘bit’ of money makes a big difference. It only requires a small potluck dish, and a giving circle ofdonations to help. There are more than 800 DFW groups in the U.S., so you can see how each dollar makes a difference.Consider visiting the group on November 18 in the Fireside Room.”For more information please contact Ruthann Marquis at 503.297.8992 or go to diningforwomen.org and read aboutthis and other featured programs that support women and children in underserved areas of our world.Meet our church familyKaren and Baird SmithKaren has belonged to Valleysince around 1970.
