Warnings The intended use of hearing aids is toamplify and transmit sound to the ears andhereby compensate for impaired hearing. The hearing aids (specially programmed foreach hearing loss) must only be used by theintended person. They should not be usedby any other person as they could damagehearing. Hearing aids should only be used asdirected by your physician or hearinghealthcare professional. Hearing aids will not restore normalhearing and will not prevent or improve ahearing impairment resulting from organicconditions. Do not use your hearing aids in explosionhazard areas. Allergic reactions to hearing aids are unlikely. However, if you experience itching, redness, soreness, inflammation or a burningsensation in or around your ears, inform4your hearing healthcare professional andcontact your physician. In the unlikely case that any parts remainin the ear canal after the removal of thehearing aid, contact a physician immediately. Remove your hearing aids for CT andMRI scans or for other electromagneticprocedures. Special care should be exercised in wearinghearing aids when maximum soundpressure levels exceed 132 decibels. Theremay be a risk of impairing your remaininghearing. Speak with your hearing healthcareprofessional to ensure the maximum outputof your hearing aids is suitable for yourparticular hearing loss.Magnet and battery warnings Never leave hearing aids, batteries ormagnets where small children and petscan reach them. Never put hearing aids orbatteries in your mouth. If a hearing aidor battery is swallowed, call a physicianimmediately.5

The magnet may affect some medicaldevices or electronic systems. Always keepthe magnet (or the telephone equippedwith the magnet) at least 30 cm (12”) awayfrom pacemakers, credit cards or othermagnetically sensitive devices. Too high distortion during dialing orphoning may mean that the phone handsetis stressed by the magnet. To avoid anydamage, please move the magnet toanother place on the telephone receiver.Precautions The use of hearing aids is only part ofhearing rehabilitation; auditory training andlip reading instruction may be required aswell. In most cases, infrequent use of hearingaids does not provide full benefit. Once youhave become accustomed to your hearingaids, wear your hearing aids everyday allday.6 Your hearing aids use the most moderncomponents to provide the best possiblesound quality in every listening situation. However, communication devices such asdigital cell phones can create interference(a buzzing sound) in hearing aids. If youexperience interference from a cell phonebeing used close by, you can minimize thisinterference in a number of ways. Switchyour hearing aids to another program, turnyour head in a different direction or locatethe cell phone and move away from it.LabelingThe serial number and year of manufacture arelocated on the outside of the hearing aid.7

Cell phone compatibility ratingSome hearing aid users have reported a buzzingsound in their hearing aids when they are usingcell phones, indicating that the cell phone andhearing aid may not be compatible. Accordingto the ANSI C63.19 standard (ANSI C63.192006 American National Standard Methods ofMeasurement of Compatibility Between WirelessCommunications Devices and Hearing Aids), thecompatibility of a particular hearing aid and cellphone can be predicted by adding the rating forthe hearing aid immunity to the rating for the cellphone emissions. For example, the sum of thehearing aid rating of 4 (M4) and a telephone ratingof 3 (M3) would result in a combined rating of 7.Any combined rating that equals at least 5 wouldprovide “normal use”; a combined rating of 6 orgreater would indicate “excellent performance.”The immunity of this hearing aid is at leastM4/T4*. The equipment performancemeasurements, categories and systemclassifications are based upon the bestinformation available but cannot guarantee thatall users will be satisfied. ote: The performance of the individualNhearing aids may vary with individual cellphones. Therefore, please try this hearing aidwith your cell phone or, if you are purchasinga new phone, please be sure to try it with yourhearing aid prior to purchase. For additionalguidance, please ask your hearing healthcareprofessional for the booklet entitled “Hearingaid compatibility with digital wireless cellphones.”SoundCore technologySoundCore includes four intelligent featuresworking together to understand your listeningenvironment making the fluid adjustmentsneeded so you can actively participate in everyconversation across every environment.EarMatchThe EarMatch process provides the bestpersonalized performance by compensating foryour unique ear shape.* For models featuring a telecoil input option89

Tinnitus maskerTinnitus masker uses broadband noise toprovide temporary relief of tinnitus.Tinnitus masker warnings The tinnitus masker is a broadband soundgenerator. It provides a means of soundenrichment therapy that can be used aspart of a personalized tinnitus managementprogram to provide temporary relief fromtinnitus. The underlying principle of soundenrichment is to provide supplementarynoise stimulation which can help defocusyour attention from your tinnitus and avoidnegative reactions. Sound enrichment, coupled with instructional counseling, is anestablished approach to managing tinnitus. Air conduction hearing aids with thetinnitus masker are to be fitted by a hearinghealthcare professional familiar with thediagnosis and management of tinnitus.16 Should you develop any side effectswhile using the tinnitus masker, such asheadaches, nausea, dizziness or heartpalpitations or experience a decreasein auditory function such as decreasedloudness tolerance, worsening of tinnitus, orspeech not as clear, you should discontinueuse of the device and seek medicalattention. The volume of the tinnitus masker can beset to a level which could lead to permanenthearing damage when used for a prolongedperiod of time. Should the tinnitus maskerbe set to such a level in your hearing aid, your hearing healthcare professional willadvise you of the maximum amount of timeper day you should use the tinnitus masker. The tinnitus masker should never be used atuncomfortable levels.17

(ii) History ofactive drainage from the ear within the previous 90 days. (iii) Historyof sudden or rapidly progressive hearing loss within the previous 90days. (iv) Acute or chronic dizziness. (v) Unilateral hearing loss ofsudden or recent onset within the previous 90 days. (vi) Audiometricair-bone gap equal to or greater than 15 decibels at 500 hertz(Hz), 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz. (vii) Visible evidence of significantcerumen accumulation or a foreign body in the ear canal. (viii)Pain or discomfort in the ear. Special care should be exercised inselecting and fitting a hearing aid whose maximum sound pressurelevel exceeds 132 decibels because there may be risk of impairingthe remaining hearing of the hearing aid user. [This provision isrequired only for those hearing aids with a maximum sound pressurecapability greater than 132 decibels (dB).]Important notice for prospective hearing aid usersGood health practice requires that a person with a hearing loss havea medical evaluation by a licensed physician (preferably a physicianwho specializes in diseases of the ear) before purchasing a hearingaid.Licensed physicians who specialize in diseases of the ear are oftenreferred to as otolaryngologists, otologists or otorhinolaryngologists.3839

The purpose of medical evaluation is to assure that all medicallytreatable conditions that may affect hearing are identified andtreated before the hearing aid is purchased. Following the medicalevaluation, the physician will give you a written statement thatstates that your hearing loss has been medically evaluated and thatyou may be considered a candidate for a hearing aid. The physicianwill refer you to an audiologist or a hearing aid dispenser, asappropriate, for a hearing aid evaluation. The audiologist or hearingaid dispenser will conduct a hearing aid evaluation to assess yourability to hear with and without a hearing aid. The hearing aidevaluation will enable the audiologist or dispenser to select andfit a hearing aid to your individual needs. If you have reservationsabout your ability to adapt to amplification, you should inquireabout the availability of a trial-rental or purchase-option program. Many hearing aid dispensers now offer programs that permit you towear a hearing aid for a period of time for a nominal fee after whichyou may decide if you want to purchase the hearing aid. Federallaw restricts the sale of hearing aids to those individuals who haveobtained a medical evaluation from a licensed physician. Federallaw permits a fully informed adult to sign a waiver statementdeclining the medical evaluation for religious or personal beliefsthat preclude consultation with a physician. The exercise of sucha waiver is not in your best health interest and its use is stronglydiscouraged.Information and explanation ofsymbolsxxxxThe numbers after the CE symbol correspond to thecode of certified institutions that were consulted underthe above-mentioned directives. This symbol indicates that it is important for the user toread and take into account the relevant information inthis user guide. This symbol indicates that it is important for the userto pay attention to the relevant warning notices in thisuser guide.Important information for handling and effective use ofthe product.Australia and New Zealand EMC andRadiocommunications compliance label.Children with hearing lossIn addition to seeing a physician for a medical evaluation, achild with a hearing loss should be directed to an audiologistfor evaluation and rehabilitation since hearing loss may causeproblems in language development and the educational andsocial growth of a child.
