Inthe early 80’s it was underwater photography withKodachrome and a Nikonos camera. This resumedin 2005 with digital cameras. Soon digital alsorekindled the photography bug in landscape, travel, wildlife and astrophotography. In addition to photography, Peter’s creative outletsinclude musical performance on the saxophone, flute and clarinet. t3August Member Share‘Street Photography/Documentary’by Ted WhirledgeStreet Photography and Documentary are two realms of photographythat can present similar locations. Street Photography, as it’s name implies, is made in or around streets. Documentary Photography could bemade around streets too, but could also be made anywhere else. Still, storytelling is the nature of eachof these photography genres. If people are the subject Street Photographers often make candid shots (fly on the wall). A Documentary Photographer often works a story with people looking into the camera, or at least aware the camerais present. How will you make your member share images this month? Are you going to shoot on the streets and have people in your images without telling them? Or, will youget into the action and tell people your images are to document the story they’re part of?“A documentary photograph is not a factual photograph.” - Dorothea LangeThe more you shoot, the more comfortable you get. Show us what you get! Upload your image or twoto Member Share. Please submit up to 2 images. 4Photo Shoot for AugustSan Diego Skyline at Nightby Dan NougierDate: Saturday, August 25, 2018Time: 3:30pm to MidnightLocation: Centennial Park, 1101 1st St., CoronadoEscape the heat and spend a few hours on the beach at Coronado Island watching the sun set. Youeven have your choice of seeing the San Diego skyline light up or (weather permitting) the moon risingover the Coronado Bridge. To make this shoot as easy as possible, I encourage everyone to join me onthe 3:33 p.m. Coaster out of Oceanside for a relaxing one hour ride into San Diego. From the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego the Coronado Ferry dock is only a few blocks away. The Ferryto Coronado is 4.75 each way. Sunset is at 7:23 p.m. The only minor drawback to utilizing all this masstransit is we will end up on the last Coaster leaving San Diego at 11:14 p.m. However, this does provideus an extra hour or so of night photography in San Diego. You can meet up with the group at any placealong the way, including our destination Centennial Park. 12How Did You Get That Shot?by Doug HansenThis photo was taken in the FalklandIslands on Feb. 28, 2017 during our2-week cruise around the tip of SouthAmerica. It was taken with my CanonT6S, 1/320, f10, 29mm (lens is an 18– 135mm Canon). We drove crosscountry through an endless mud andmoss landscape for nearly two hoursin a 4WD Land Rover to reach ourdestination, the penguin colonies atVolunteer Point where I photographedthis King Penguin. Volunteer Pointhosts the largest colony of these KingPenguins in the world outside of Antarctica. Although it was the middle of their summer, we each hadto borrow a parka due to the cold winds!October Photo ShootLone Pine, CADates: Oct. 12-14, 2018This will be a 2-1/2 day photo shoot outof Lone Pine, CA, located on US 395about a 4 to 5 hour drive north of us. Thearea surrounding Lone Pine is a photographer’s paradise. Starting with sunrisein the Alabama Hills Friday morning, wewill attempt to capture as much of thebeauty of the area as possible prior to our departure around noon on Sunday. One of the many highlights of our trip will be a visit to the Bristlecone Pine Forest, home to the oldest trees on the planet. Wealso have stops planned at Whitney Portal, Big Pine Creek, Manzanar National Historical Site, and theEastern California Museum. The size of the group is limited to no more than 12 members and is alreadyfull. But, if you wish to be on the waiting list please email Dan Nougier at photoshoots@nc-photo.org.Additional info is available on request.

13MEMBER SPOTLIGHTby Tom VancisinI am originally from Connecticut and graduated from the University of RhodeIsland with a degree in Business Administration. I enjoyed a long career in IT,retiring in December 2017. Photography has been a hobby since my thirties aftermoving to San Diego in 1989. It has provided a creative outlet to balance my life.My primary interest is in black and white landscapes that include broader viewsto more intimate close ups. A good number of my photographs are within 15 feetof the camera with granite/rock, trees, bark, and rocky creeks as subjects. Intricate textures and details draw my attention.Being outdoors, hiking (wandering may be more accurate), and exploring new places are additional pleasures – all of which pair nicely with landscape photography. Traveling to less crowded locations/times ofthe year work best for my vision, allowing me to get a sense of place and connect with the area.I’ve traveled extensively throughout California, Oregon, Washington, New England, and Iceland. My mostrecent photography trip was to Yosemite for a Palomar College class. This trip yielded some great images, including one of my favorite photographic subjects – ice. I am a member of NCPS, the San DiegoPhoto Club, and most recently the Photographer’s Eye Collective.Gallery ShowSee some of Tom’s work at the Photographer’s Eye Collective, 236 East GrandAve in Escondido. The Collective’s current show, Water Worlds, runs from July14 to August 25.

It was early in the morning after aVERY cold night so the hoar frost covered everything. It was a magical moment in time. There were360-degree photo ops - almost overwhelming!”“After 9/11 a new Transportation Center had to bebuilt. A Spanish architect named Calatrava wonthe commission. New York politics bastardized hisoriginal design. But the final product retained manyof the curves typical of a Calatrava design. In thispicture you see the curves of Calatrava in the foreground and the more standardized design for thefirst tower to go up after the original World TradeCenter towers were destroyed.”

17TECH TIPby Mike McMahonTips for Travel PhotographySummertime means travel time for many of us. Here are a few tips to helpmake your travel photography more enjoyable and successful.Preparation – When the Navy deploys a new ship, it takes it out for a shake-down cruise a practice run to make sure that everything is operating correctly. A similar approach can be a big help forphotographers. Three weeks before your trip, force yourself to go on a mini photo shoot. Pack yourgear, drive across town, and shoot for a least an hour. Did you discover items that you forgot? Itemsthat need repair? You now have three weeks to find and buy those items and to make sure that yourgear is complete. The Locals – Make an effort to include the local folks in your photos. While it’s tempting to concentrate on fine-art landscape or architecture shots, remember that adding people often lends a senseof scale. Ask the proprietor of your favorite little B&B to step out for a photo on the front step. If he’sreluctant, ask if he would pose with your spouse, or with you. These kinds of photos can be some ofthe best souvenirs from your trip.Photojournalistic Approach – Make an effort to capture images that help tell the story of yourtrip. They can include signs along the way and/or photos of your favorite restaurants and hotels. If youlater decide to make a slide show or video with your images, you’ll be delighted to have these imageson hand.Shoot Some Video – Just about every digital camera now includes a video mode. Use it. Briefvideo snapshots (10 – 30 seconds) make a delightful addition to the memories of your trip. Simpleslice-of-life clips are great they go a long way to capturing the sights and sounds of a place.Use Multiple Chips – Avoid the temptation to buy a single extra-large media chip and use it foryour entire vacation. Chips malfunction and cameras can be lost or stolen. Take a tip from our days ofshooting multiple rolls of film spread your trip over multiple chips to reduce your risk.Do you have a question or a suggestion for a Tech Tip?Please send it along to mike.techguy@gmail.com. Thanks.Have a great trip and happy shooting!
