Annual Review 2021A Message of Thanks to Our Supporters and VolunteersTo our dear friends and colleagues, we convey a huge thank you for your many kindnesses in supportof the Foundation’s mission on behalf of oncology nurses. Our 40th anniversary ushered in a waveof enthusiasm across our community, resulting in fundraising successes in our 40th annual fundcampaign among individuals; major giving from the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), ONS Chapters,and the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC); the 11th Annual Parade of Chapters; andsignificant institutional contributions to advance cancer nursing research and mission activities. TheFoundation ended the year 1.8 million strong thanks to your collective generosity. Highlights From Our 40th Year The Foundation launched the newsletter Inspiration and Impact. ONCC created an emerging leadership scholarship fund within the Foundation to fund twoawards annually. The ONS Dallas Chapter created an academic scholarship fund within the Foundation to honorits 40th anniversary. The 2021 Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lectureship was awarded to Tara Rynders, RN,MFA, BSN, the founder and artistic director of The Clinic, an arts and play-based company thatprovides workshops, performances, and research around burnout and secondary traumaticstress. The Foundation hosted four unique workshops in five Chapters called Creativity for Caregivers,piloting creative exercises to provide support for oncology nurses in partnership withONS Chapters and the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute. Erica Fischer-Cartlidge, DNP, RN, CNS, CBCN , AOCNS , received the 2021 Connie HenkeYarbro Excellence in Cancer Nursing Mentorship Award, recognizing her caring investment in thecareer development of many oncology nurses she has mentored. The 40 Ways to Wellness celebration was held in August 2021 to support oncology nurses intheir wellness and resiliency. Deborah Kirk, DNP, FNP-BC, NP-C, AOCN , FAANP, Peter M. Labombarde, CFSC, Mona Stage,BSN, RN OCN -Emeritus, Patricia Reymann, BSN, MSN, AOCN (in memoriam), and Lucinda(Cindy) Ann Jones, RN, MSc (in memoriam) were recognized in the Legacy of Care Society.I have been blessed to become an oncology nurse and have the ability to walk withmy patients in their journey through the sometimes unpredictable and scary diagnosisthat is cancer. Cancer Nursing ResearchInvestments Continued to GrowThroughout 2021, cancer nursing research grants of 50,000, 100,000, and 150,000 wereawarded to a total of 8 nurse scientists from both endowment sources and generous corporatecontributions made by Bristol Myers Squibb; Genentech, a Member of the Roche Group;Merck & Co., Inc.; and Novartis. The total financial commitment for research projectswas almost 600,000.New 2021 contributions from AstraZeneca, Bristol Myers Squibb, Gilead Sciences,GlaxoSmithKline, and Merck & Co., Inc., will fund research projects duringthe Foundation’s 2022 cycle.Receiving a research grant through the Oncology Nursing Foundation will provideme with the opportunities to work with the experts from different disciplines and thecommunities that we work for to face challenges in reducing health disparities amongpeople of color affected by cancer.
