Letter from the Appeal DirectorDear Pastors, Administrators, Parish Directors, and Appeal Chairs:This year’s parish Catholic Stewardship Appeal launch is scheduled for February 1st and 2nd. Pleasebegin your preparations now and plan your promotional activities for the year, especially those around thefive solicitation mailings and other Appeal related events for greatest impact.Parishioners can expect their Appeal mailing to arrive within 7- 10 days from the scheduled January27 drop date. Please reference this mailing as part of your weekend launch activities and encourageconsideration and participation.th1) Once again, we’ll be doing an In-Pew Solicitation; however, parishes will have a choice among threeseparate weekends beginning with launch weekend.2) Having had a highly successful late-spring Appeal mailing that included all 192 parishes and raising morethan 300,000, we will follow a similar approach for the 2020 campaign.3) Monthly or recurring giving will continue to play a larger part in parishioner giving so will again be anoption on pledge cards and the Appeal website. Donors may choose giving on a recurring monthly basiswith deductions made through credit card or EFT until they say otherwise. This is not only convenient forthe donor, but saves the archdiocese money as it reduces the number of mail solicitations.4) Parishes will receive weekly electronic Appeal status reports April - September and then bi-weeklyOctober – January.Resources in both English and Spanish are available on the appeal website at www.catholicappeal.org. Allmaterials and resources are easily accessible, downloadable and ready to use for print or posting on yourparish website. The Appeal video is a highly valuable tool to help inform, inspire and motivate parishioners and explainhow their gifts are making a difference in support of spiritual mission and sacramental work of the Church. Useyour creativity and resourcefulness to ensure it reaches the greatest number of parishioners possible with itsmessages of love, hope and faith. The changes we introduced last year bared fruit as we saw increases in both dollars and donors to theAppeal. You’ll find the basic materials and resources you’re familiar with to help you run a highly successfulparish Appeal effort. The development team and I are always ready and willing to assist you. Please reach meat (414) 769-3320 or bohlmannr@archmil.org.Thanks for agreeing to serve as your parish’s Appeal chairperson. I wish you much success with your effortson behalf of the 2020 Catholic Stewardship Appeal. Thank you and God bless you!Yours in Christ,Rob Bohlmann, CFREDirector, Catholic Stewardship Appeal3

2020 Appeal ThemeMANY HANDS. ONE VISION is the theme of this year’s CatholicStewardship Appeal. Having been a sub-theme for many, manyyears behind, ALIVE IN FAITH, HOPE STARTS HERE and 2019’sAMAZING GRACE, it’s now taking center stage to guide messagingfor the 2020 Appeal campaign.MANY HANDS, ONE VISION is a fitting representation of what weas a Church can do when we come together in Christ’s name. Wehave the ability to do so much good. The power is in our hands tocreate a vision for the Church and through our collective generosity and commitment, make that visionbecome a reality. As faithful Catholics, we all want the Church to prosper, be strong, vital, and serve the faithful through thesacraments and ministry. We also want a Church that is diverse, welcoming, inclusive, spiritual and joyful. Ina word, prayerful.5

Promoting the Appeal Show the MANY HANDS, ONE VISION Video. It’s filled with personal stories and testimonials aboutdeaconate formation, Catholic Charities, intercultural ministries and so much more. It’s a powerful, thoughtful, compelling, inspirational message of help, hope and faith. In-Pew Solicitation. The new in-pew solicitation process is taking place on three consecutive weekendsbeginning with launch weekend February 1st and 2nd. Pastors may choose which weekend works best for themand the parish’s schedule. In-pew provides parishioners another way to respond with a gift outside a directmail piece or online. Please take advantage of this highly successful approach to increase giving in your parish. Show Parish Impact. From the pulpit and in your bulletins, share how Appeal ministries affect you personallyor how your parishioners benefit. Using real-life examples draw parishioners closer to the Appeal and becauseof that; they are more motivated to give. Bringing the true impact of ministries to your parishioners makes theresults authentic and tangible. Participation, participation, participation! Dollars are important to sustain ministry, but emphasis should beplaced on increasing participation in your parish. Ultimately, participation drives dollars. Let parishionersknow gifts of all sizes are welcome and needed. Demonstrate Value. The Appeal funds ministries and programs that m any parishes and schools cannotprovide on their own due to limited financial resources or lack of expertise. For example, seminarianformation, assessing schools to help them achieve academic excellence and accreditation, and training parishand school staff to be competent and effective in their work. Let parishioners know these services areprovided at no charge to p arishes and the benefit derived from them. Make it Personal. Gather information about your parish’s utilization of Appeal-funded services andresources throughout the year such as: parish council and committee resource materials and support;parish offertory and budgeting assistance; guidance with prayer, liturgy and worship; or how newly ordaineddeacons or priests benefited from a seminary education. Share these examples with parishioners todemonstrate how they are receiving a direct return on their Appeal investments. Increase Awareness. Review the communication strategies found on the Appeal website for ideas topromote the Appeal in your parish. Lead by Example. As a pastor or parish lay leader, you set the tone and expectation for participationand giving. Your personal example of stewardship and financial support to the Appeal speaks volumes. Howwell you make the case for support and share your reasons for giving are strong motivators for yourparishioners to reflect on their own call to s te w a rd s h i p a n d g enerosity. The degree to which you talkabout the Appeal and encourage support at Mass is measured by the level of response demonstrated by yourparishioners. Online Giving. Electronic giving continues to grow in popularity as a giving preference because of ease andconvenience. Encourage your parishioners to use the online giving options available to them atwww.catholicappeal.org. Employer Matching Gifts. An interactive database on the Appeal website allows visitors to enter the name oftheir employer to see if it offers such a program. If so, additional information such as gift guidelines, submission dates, dollar match ratios, matching gift forms, and processing procedures can be accessedthrough the company’s website which oftentimes is listed along with other useful information.6

2020 Catholic Stewardship Appeal-Funded MinistriesContributions are restricted to the annual 8.1 million Catholic Stewardship Appeal for use in four keyareas of ministry: serving families, strengthening parishes, supporting schools, and forming priests and parishleaders. Parish In-Pew Solicitation WeekendsWeekends of February 1st-2nd, 8th-9th or 15th-16th Why conduct an In-Pew solicitation? The In-Pew process provides an opportunity to bring the Catholic Stewardship Appeal to the forefront ofparishioners’ minds while providing them with a convenient mechanism to respond at that moment. It can reengage former donors as well as those who have never made a gift to the Appeal, or those who are notregistered as members of a parish. SuppliesThe Development Office will provide each parish a kit of In-Pew envelopes equal to 1.2 times the numberbulletins the parish receives in a typical week. Items needed for the In-Pew process during Mass are: In-Pew envelopes Pencils (these were given to all parishes by the Development Office in 2019)The process outlined below is based on successful models used by several dioceses across the country. TheDevelopment Office is available to assist parishes with any questions or concerns regarding the in-pew process. Before the In-Pew Weekend effort: Place an announcement in the parish bulletin the week prior to In-Pew Weekend preparing parishioners of itscoming. Pastors should make an announcement the week prior to In-Pew Weekend to reinforce the reminder in thebulletin in case parishioners don’t see the bulletin announcement. Hospitality ministers/ushers are made aware of what items need to be distributed and collected during Mass. Parish office staff/volunteers are prepared to collect the completed envelopes after they are collected andensure they are mailed the archdiocese for processing. Music ministers are consulted and made aware that appropriate music may be needed during the In-PewSolicitation process. Before Mass: Before Mass begins, the pastor or Appeal chairperson should consult with the hospitalityministers/ushers to ensure that the required supplies are prepared and available.During Mass:Step 1- Appeal from homilist – The pastor includes a personal appeal for support of the Catholic StewardshipAppeal in the homily.Step 2- Instructions from Pastor/Volunteer – At the conclusion of homily, the pastor explains how to completethe In-Pew envelope. The script is on page 12.Note: By conducting the effort immediately after the homily, Appeal gifts can be included in the collection basketas the community’s offering to God.8

Step 3- The pastor invites the hospitality ministers/ushers to come forward and distribute the In-Pewenvelopes and pencils. During the envelope distribution, the pastor instructs parishioners to refrain fromcompleting the envelope until all of the envelopes are distributed. The speaker can use this time to discuss theoption of making a pledge over time and/or explain the various giving options.Step 4- Once envelopes are distributed, the pastor invites one member of each household to open the envelopeand follow along as he reviews the information and instructions for completing the envelope.Step 5- Using the script, the pastor walks parishioners through the completion of the envelope. Note: The choirmusicians should play appropriate offertory music while parishioners are completing the pledge portion of theenvelope. After Mass: Once Mass has ended, hospitality ministers/ushers collect any remaining envelopes and pencils fromthe pews and ensure that supplies are sufficient for the next Mass.Step 6- Mailing In-Pew envelopes to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee: Please do not open any sealed envelopes. All envelopes collected will be processed by the archdiocese. Your parish kit contains a number of large, whiteself-addressed mailing envelopes for use in mailing the In-Pew envelopes to the archdiocese. Be sure that a parish return-address label is also affixed to the mailing envelope. All envelopes must be mailed to:Catholic Stewardship AppealArchdiocese of Milwaukee3501 S Lake Drive, PO Box 070912Milwaukee, WI 53207-0912Note: Parishes may also hand-deliver envelopes at the address above to the Development Office.Processing Appeal Gifts Received at Other TimesAppeal gifts oftentimes continue coming into parishes following the In-Pew effort. These gifts are to be collectedby the parish and forwarded to the archdiocese in the same fashion as outlined above for In-Pew Weekend.9

In-Pew Presentation Script (Roughly 8 Minutes)Please use this script to walk parishioners through completing the pledge envelope.“Good morning. Today, our parish is conducting an in-pew solicitation process for Archdiocese ofMilwaukee that asks all parishioners to make a financial commitment to the Catholic StewardshipAppeal.”“As your pastor, I thank all of you who gave to this appeal in past years and/or have responded to arecent mailing from Archbishop Listecki. I can assure you that the funds you gave are greatly neededand deeply appreciated by the people served by archdiocesan ministries.”“Each of us is called to share his or her gifts in support of the Church. Though we support our parish, wemust also look to support the greater Church. And the Catholic Stewardship is a very effective way tosupport ministry outside of our parish community, in addition to supporting what the archdioceseprovides our parish.”“So, I ask one member of each household to take a pledge envelope and a pencil. Please take an in-pewenvelope even if you have already given in the mail. You can indicate that you have already given on theenvelope.”“While we are waiting, please examine the pledge options listed on the right side of the envelope. I askthat each of you consider making a monthly pledge rather than a one-time gift. If each of us makes apledge, together we can provide additional financial support for the important work of our archdiocese. And please consider giving a monthly pledge that will allow you to make an even larger gift.”“For example, a gift of 25.00 a month over 12 months equals 300.00. But, of course, you decide whatis appropriate and affordable for you.”“Prior to sealing the envelope, please do not seal the pencil in the envelope. Keep it separate. We willcollect the pencils and reuse them.”(Pause and make sure that everyone has received a pledge envelope and pencil. Pay special attention topeople who are standing and in the cry room or choir loft and don’t forget the members of the choir.Once everyone has an envelope, continue with the script.)“I will now lead you through the commitment process in order to limit the time that it takes.”11

(Pause and wait until about half of those participating are looking back at you.)“Please print the name of our parish on the top line. If you are a visitor and are a member of anotherparish in the diocese, please indicate that parish so it may receive credit for your gift.”(Pause and wait until about half of those participating are looking back at you.)“Please print your first and last name on the second line.”(Pause and wait until about half of those participating are looking back at you.)“On the third line, please print your address including any unit or apartment number.”(Pause as above.)“On the fourth line, please print your city, state, and zip code.”(Pause as above.)“On the fifth line, please print your preferred phone number and email address.”(Pause as above.)“If you have already made a pledge this year by mail or some other method, please print “Amen” in thegift section of card to let us know that you’ve done so. Please do not indicate any additional financialinformation on the form, as we do not want to count your pledge twice. It is still important for you tocomplete the name and par
