MISSIONNARY ROSARYWITH POPE FRANCISThe venerable Pauline-Marie Jaricot, founder of the Propagation of the Faith, understood that theMissionary Church needed support through the baptized people’s prayer. She promoted the Rosary byasking to pray for the missionaries. Since 1883, October has been the missionary month and the Rosarymonth, that is why we suggest a meditated missionary Rosary with Pope Francis. This document titled “Missionary Rosary” suggests four texts to help you meditate the Mysteries of theRosary. Each mystery is illustrated with a biblical text and a citation by Pope Francis related to themystery. We have chosen the Joyful Mysteries, the Glorious Mysteries, the Luminous Mysteries and theMissionary Mysteries. These Rosaries can be recited at all times, but they were prepared to be used specially during theMissionary Month of October 2020.

MISSIONARY ROSARYJOYFUL MYSTERIES1. The Annunciation(Luke 1:28–38)And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favoured one! The Lord is withyou.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered whatsort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not beafraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. Behold, you willconceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name himJesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him thethrone of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom therewill be no end.” But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most Highwill overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold,Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her, whowas called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid ofthe Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.Meditation with Pope Francis:“Today let us all ask ourselves whether we are afraid of what God might ask, or of what he doesask. Do I let myself be surprised by God, as Mary was, or do I remain caught up in my own safety zone:in forms of material, intellectual or ideological security, taking refuge in my own projects and plans? DoI truly let God into my life? How do I answer him?”(Homily for the Marian Day, October 13, 2013)2. The Visitation(Luke 1:39–47; 56)During those days, Mary set out and travelled to the hill country in haste to a townof Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. WhenElizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are youamong women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happento me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment, the sound of your greetingreached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what wasspoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of theLord; my spirit rejoices in God my saviour. Mary remained with her about three months and then returnedto her home.

Meditation with Pope Francis:‘We are invited to “leave home” and to open our eyes and hearts to others. Our revolution comes aboutthrough tenderness, through the joy which always becomes closeness and compassion—which is notpity, but suffering with, so as to free—and leads us to get involved in, and to serve, the life of others. Ourfaith makes us leave our homes and go forth to encounter others, to share their joys, their hopes and theirfrustrations. Our faith, “calls us out of our house,” to visit the sick, the prisoner and to those who mourn. It makes us able to laugh with those who laugh, and rejoice with our neighbours who rejoice. Like Mary,we want to be a Church which serves, which leaves home and goes forth, which goes forth from itschapels, forth from its sacristies, in order to accompany life, to sustain hope, to be the sign ofunity ’Homily in Santiago de Cuba, September 22, 20153. The Nativity(Matthew 2:1–2; 9–12)When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is thenewborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come todo him homage.’After their audience with the king, they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its risingpreceded them until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed atseeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostratedthemselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed fortheir country by another way.Meditation with Pope Francis:‘These men saw a star that made them set out. The discovery of something unusual in the heavenssparked a whole series of events. The star did not shine just for them, nor did they have special DNA tobe able to see it. As one of the Church Fathers rightly noted, the Magi did not set out because they hadseen the star, but they saw the star because they had already set out’ (cf. Saint John Chrysostom).Their hearts were open to the horizon and they could see what the heavens were showing them, for theywere guided by an inner restlessness. They were open to something new.”(Homily for the Solemnity of the Epiphany, January 6, 2017)

4. The Presentation in the temple(Luke 2:36–40)There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after hermarriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left thetemple, but worshipped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their owntown of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God wasupon him.Meditation with Pope Francis:“Those who truly encounter Jesus cannot remain the same as before. He is the novelty that makes allthings new. Those who experience this encounter become witnesses and make the encounterpossible for others; they also promote the culture of encounter, avoiding the self-referentiality thatmakes us stay closed off within ourselves.”Homily for World Day of Consecrated Life, February 2, 20165. The Finding in the temple(Luke 2:41–52)Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, andwhen he was twelve years old, they went up according to festivalcustom. After they had completed its days, as they were returning, theboy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not knowit. Thinking that he was in the caravan, they journeyed for a day andlooked for him among their relatives and acquaintances, but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalemto look for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listeningto them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and hisanswers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why haveyou done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” And he said tothem, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” But theydid not understand what he said to them. He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and wasobedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom andage and favour before God and man.

Meditation with Pope Francis:“At the end of that pilgrimage, Jesus returned to Nazareth and was obedient to his parents (ref. Lk 2:51).This image also contains a beautiful teaching about our families. A pilgrimage does not end when wearrive at our destination, but when we return home and resume our everyday lives, putting intopractice the spiritual fruits of our experience. We know what Jesus did on that occasion. Instead ofreturning home with his family, he stayed in Jerusalem, in the Temple, causing great distress to Maryand Joseph who were unable to find him. For this little ‘escapade,’ Jesus probably had to beg forgivenessof his parents. The Gospel doesn’t say this, but I believe that we can presume it. Mary’s question, moreover, contains a certain reproach, revealing the concern and anguish which she and Joseph felt.Returning home, Jesus surely remained close to them, as a sign of his complete affection and obedience.Moments like these become part of the pilgrimage of each family; the Lord transforms the moments intoopportunities to grow, to ask for and to receive forgiveness, to show love and obedience.”Homily for the Feast of the Holy Family, December 27, 2015Prayer for Missionary Month to Our Lady of the MissionsMary, when you said “yes”at the Annunciation,God sent his Soninto the world,as the bearer of Mission!Mary full of grace, you set outin haste at the Visitation,as a model for allmissionary disciples.Mother of the Church, let us discover our callin order to respond:“Here I am!”Guided by the Spirit, sent by Jesus Christ,we will proclaim, with your help, the Good News to all Creation! Our Lady of the Missions, pray for us!AmenFr. Yoland Ouellet, o.m.i.

LUMINOUS MYSTERIES1. The Baptism of Jesus(Luke 3:21–22)After all the people had been baptized and Jesus had also been baptized andwas praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him inbodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are mybeloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”Meditation with Pope Francis:“In effect, as from generation to generation life is transmitted, so too from generation to generation, through rebirth at the baptismal font, grace is transmitted, and by this grace the Christian People'sjourneys through time, like a river that irrigates the land and spreads God’s blessing throughout the world. From the moment that Jesus said what we heard in the Gospel Reading, the disciples went out to baptize;and from that time until today there is a chain in the transmission of the faith through Baptism. And eachone of us is a link in that chain: a step forward, always; like a river that irrigates. Such is the grace ofGod and such is our faith, which we must transmit to our sons and daughters, transmit to children, so thatonce adults, they can do the same for their children. This is what Baptism is. Why? Because Baptismlets us enter this People of God that transmits the faith. This is very important. A People of Godthat journeys and hands down the faith.”General Audience, January 15, 20142. The wedding at Cana(John 2:1–10)On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the motherof Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have nowine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me?My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there weresix stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesustold them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some outnow and take it to the headwaiter.”* So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that hadbecome wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water, knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and thenwhen people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.”Meditation with Pope Francis:“And indeed at Cana the servants obey. ’Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filledthem up to the brim. He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the steward of the feast.” Sothey took it (Jn 2:7–8). At this wedding, the New Covenant is truly articulated and to the servants of

the Lord, that is to all the Church, is entrusted a new mission: ‘Do whatever he tells you!’ To servethe Lord means to listen and to put into practise his Word. It is the simple but essential recommendationof the Mother of Jesus and it is the programme of life of the Christian.”(General Audience, June 8, 2016)3. The Proclamation of the Kingdom(Matthew 11:1–5)When Jesus finished giving these commands to his twelve disciples, he wentaway from that place to teach and to preach in their towns. When John heardin prison of the works of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to him with thisquestion, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?”Jesus said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: theblind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and thepoor have the good news proclaimed to them.”Meditation with Pope Francis:“The Church’s mission, then, is not to spread a religious ideology, much less to propose a lofty ethicalteaching. Many movements throughout the world inspire high ideals or ways to live a meaningful life.Through the mission of the Church, Jesus Christ himself continues to evangelize and act; hermission thus makes present in history the kairos, the favourable time of salvation. Through theproclamation of the Gospel, the risen Jesus becomes our contemporary, so that those who welcome himwith faith and love can experience the transforming power of his Spirit, who makes humanity andcreation fruitful, even as the rain does with the earth. ‘His resurrection is not an event of the past; itcontains a vital power which has permeated this world. Where all seems to be dead, signs of theresurrection suddenly spring up. It is an irresistible force’ (Evangelii Gaudium, 276).”Message for World Mission Day 20174. The Transfiguration(Matthew 17:1–9)After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led themup a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them;his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. Andbehold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. ThenPeter said to Jesus in reply, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish,I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is mybeloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fellprostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be

afraid.” And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they werecoming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son ofMan has been raised from the dead.”Meditation with Pope Francis:“At the end of the stunning experience of the Transfiguration, the disciples came down the mountain(ref. v. 9) with eyes and hearts transfigured by their encounter with the Lord. It is the journey that we toocan make. The ever more vibrant rediscovery of Jesus is not the aim in itself, but spurs us to ‘come downthe mountain,’ energized by the power of the divine Spirit, so as to decide on new paths of conversionand to constantly witness to charity, as the law of daily life.”(Angelus, August 6, 2017)5. The Institution of the Eucharist(Matthew 26:26–29)While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said theblessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said,“Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink fromit, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, from now on I shall not drinkthis fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father.”Meditation with Pope Francis:Jesus poured out his Blood as the price and the laver, so that we might be purified of all sin: not to losehope, let us look to Him, drink at his font, to be shielded from the risk of corruption. Then we will feelthe grace of transformation: we will always be poor sinners, but the Blood of Christ will free us from oursins and restore our dignity. It will free us from corruption. Not by our merit, with sincere humility,we will be able to bring our brothers the love of our Lord and Saviour. We will be his eyes whichgo in search of Zacchaeus and Mary Magdalene; we will be his hand which soothes those who aresick in body and spirit; we will be his heart which loves those in need of reconciliation, mercy andunderstanding.(Homily for the Solemnity of the most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, June 4, 2015)

Prayer for Missionary Month to Our Lady of the MissionsMary, when you said “yes”at the Annunciation,God sent his Soninto the world,as the bearer of Mission!Mary full of grace, you set outin haste at the Visitation,as a model for allmissionary disciples.Mother of the Church, let us discover our callin order to respond:“Here I am!”Guided by the Spirit, sent by Jesus Christ,we will proclaim, with your help, the Good News to all Creation! Our Lady of the Missions, pray for us!AmenFr. Yoland Ouellet, o.m.i.GLORIOUS MYSTERIES1. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ(1 Corinthians 15: 14; 19–20)And if Christ has not been raised, then empty too is our preaching; empty, too, your faith. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are the mostpitiable people of all. But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.Meditation with Pope Francis:“Dear brothers and sisters, let us point out the Risen Christ to those who askus to account for the hope that is in us (ref. 1 Pet 3:15). Let us point him out with the proclamation ofthe word, but above all with our lives as people who have been raised. Let us show the joy of beingchildren of God, the freedom that living in Christ gives us which is true freedom, the freedom that savesus from the slavery of evil, of sin and of death! Looking at the heavenly homeland, we shall receive newlight and fresh strength, both in our commitment and in our daily efforts. This is a precious service thatwe must give to this world of ours which all too often no longer succeeds in raising its gaze on high, nolonger succeeds in raising its gaze to God.” (General Audience, April 10, 2013)

2. The Ascension of Jesus(Matthew 28:16–20)The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus hadordered them. When they saw him, they worshipped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and onearth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of allnations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, andof the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with youalways, until the end of the age.”Meditation with Pope Francis:“Jesus’s Ascension into heaven thus constitutes the end of the mission that the Son received from theFather and the beginning of the continuation of this mission on the part of the Church. From this moment, from the moment of the Ascension, in fact, Christ’s presence in the world is mediated by his disciples,by those who believe in him and proclaim him. This mission will last until the end of history and everyday will have the assistance of the Risen Lord, who assures: ‘I am with you always, to the close of theage’ (v. 20). His presence brings strength during per
