Message from the Vice-ChancellorThe University is always concentrating on improving the academic standards and Introducing newneed based courses and thus involving in fruitful interaction with the society. Not with standing with thesewe are now marching towards establishing our interaction with the corporate world in a big way. Universityhas already established “Department of Statistics: Consultancy Activity Cell” as a part of “University andIndustry Interaction Cell”. Through this cell the Department of Statistics is carrying out consultancy activitieswith industries and research organizations. The Department has set an objective to revise/change the coursesand syllabi, from time to time, to meet the statistical and computational needs of corporate world. The M.ScProgramme offered by the Department of Statistics is with this purpose. It seeks to shape, nurture, and developpotential statisticians with well-equipped statistical and computational skills. Moreover, they are also trainedin hardworking, pro-active behaviour and positive thinking and action.I expect from all our students to devote their time and energy to create awareness in the society atlarge about valuable work being done in our University.I am glad to know that last two years students were recruited in different establishments giving goodresponse to the placement brochure. I am confident that with continued support of various Industries andInstitutes the Department will achieve greater heights in its pursuit of excellence. I wish all the students ofthis batch every success in their lives. I am sure they are well equipped to face the challenges that lie ahead intheir lives in general and in the statistical consultancy activities, in particular.Vallabh VidyanagarMarch 20, 2010Bharatbhai G.PatelVice Chancellor3

Message from Head’s Desk .Dr. Ashok ShanubhogueProfessor and HeadDepartment of StatisticsSardar Patel UniversityValabh Vidyanagar- 388120Email : a shanubhogue@yahoo.com(M) 09879535433(O) 02692- 226871, 226881It gives me immense pleasure to release the students’ placement brochure for the Batch 2009-10. At the outsetlet me express my gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all those who responded positively for our placement brochures’, since2004, and showed faith and confidence in our students, by providing suitable recruitments.I am happy to state that our M.Sc. programme is finding necessary changes and improvements by consideringthe suggestions that we received from the experts in corporate sector and in academics from time to time.In today’s fast computational environment, training the statisticians in computational as well as statisticalskills is a challenging task. Moreover, providing expertise in using simultaneously several statistical techniques based oncomplex data sets to meet a set of objectives effectively is an exigent job. The rapidly progressing globalization, fast paceof technological changes and competitive corporate world has made corporate bodies to acquire world reputed qualitystandards certificates. This has resulted in increased use of statistics at every sphere of corporate activities. We hope thatour trained statisticians will be able to meet such demands of the Industry and thus encouraging us to progress byincorporating necessary changes in our academic activities as and when we receive feedbacks.I am confident that our young boys and girls who have track record of accomplishment anddemonstrated potential will make useful contributions to whichever organizations they join.I do look forward to your favorable response by way of recruiting our students and for forging a mutuallybeneficial relationship with your organization.Vallabh VidyanagarMarch 20, 2010Ashok ShanubhogueProfessor and Head4

Brief Outline of Department of Statistics .The Department of Statistics was established in the year 1961. Since its establishment thedepartment made its name as one of the best teaching and research department in thewestern region. At present the department is having seven faculty members activelyengaged in teaching and research.About M.Sc. Programme:The M.Sc course of the department is a four-semester programme spread over two years. In the programme the students study 18 subjects along with practicals and a project. Thecurriculum and course work of the M.Sc Programme have been carefully designed by takinginto account the UGC recommendations, availability of the staff with relevant specializationsand need of government and the corporate sectors in and around the township. Students areoffered two specializations :(i) Biostatistics and (ii) Financial Statistics. Along with the M.Scprogramme students are also allowed to take certificate courses in (i) SPSS (ii) Biostatistics and(iii) Financial Statistics. The objective of these add-on courses is to provide opportunity to thestudents to enhance their knowledge base to meet any statistical need of the employer. The teaching method comprises of lectures, case studies, presentations, seminars, quizzes, programming, software handling, and consultancy training and practical. The emphasis of theteaching is on both learning the fundamentals and application of the techniques, by suitablyselecting from the statistical tool kit, for the data obtained through statistical consultancyactivities. The students’ also carryout project work as a part of their study. In the project studentusually take up the problems assigned by the projects guides. At the end of the work theysubmit a detailed report of the project for which they are evaluated for 100 marks. Theemphasis on the project is giving training from the collection of the data till the preparation ofthe final report.5

ASSEMBLY HALLWell furnished assembly hall with thecapacity of 300 students.Training Received Through M.Sc Programme. The students of M.Sc programme are given rigorous training both in theoreticaldevelopments and applied statistics. They study most of the applied or application orientedsubjects like Stochastic Process, Multivariate Analysis, Sampling, Design of Experiments, LinearModels, Reliability and life testing, Statistical Quality Control, Linear Programming andEconometrics. This year we have opened up a Statistical Consultancy Cell. The cell approachesthe prospective customers and, through its wide publicity, it gets work related to statisticalanalysis. These works are assigned to interested students with a teacher-in-charge for necessaryguidance. Thus, students get on hand training of data analysis. Apart from this, we have madeproject work as compulsory in M. Sc. final.9

Abrasive water jet (AWJ) machining has been known for over 40 years. It was introduced, described and presented by Hashish [1]. It is often used to cut either semi-finished products or even final products, namely from plan-parallel plates of material. Nevertheless, applications of abrasive water jets for milling [2], turning [3], grinding [4] or polishing [5] are tested more and more often .
