Now PlayingIntroductory Pack 1:FPITV Genre: Occult ThrillerIntroductionThis is Roleplaying“ Freeze! Police!’ I shout, then charge after the suspect, and try to tackle him.” Both the Director and the actor rollsome dice, then the Director says, “You both run hard, andjust as he starts to pull ahead, he trips on a tree root andstumbles. You grab his shirt and you both tumble onto theground.”Welcome to the demo kit for the Now Playing roleplaying game from Carnivore Games. Here you will find everything you need to begin playing the game that turns anyTV show into a roleplaying game. This kit contains onecomplete playable episode of a TV “show” that was createdspecifically for Now Playing, and all of the rules that youneed to play it. Just read through this kit, scrape up fourFudge dice or four six-sided dice, and you are ready to play.A roleplaying game is much like the old “cops and robbers” game that we used to play as children. However, instead of running around outside with toy guns, we takethe game inside and sit around a table. One person is chosen to describe the setting to everyone, and to act out allthe roles that no one else is playing. I’ll call this person theDirector. Everyone else acts out the role of one of the leading characters. The acting is done verbally and with whatbody language can be used while sitting at a table. Theactor simply tells the Director about any physical actionthat his character wants to make. The Director determinesthe outcomes. For this, a set system of rules is introducedto keep the game balanced and to provide continuity. Theserules govern how a character can perform physical actionswhile his player is sitting at a table. This often involvesrolling dice. All roleplaying games work in this way. This demo represents the Occult Thriller, which is onlyone of the many genres of television shows that you canplay with Now Playing. Demos of other genres will soon beavailable for you to try.We hope you enjoy this introduction to Now Playing. You can find more information about Now Playing at theCarnivore Games web site on the World Wide Web athttp://www.carnivoregames.com/.This is TelevisionTwo police detectives track down a serial killer. Thecrew of a starship encounters a derelict ship adrift inspace. A team of superheroes matches wits and brawn witha new villain. A reporter from a local tabloid investigatesthe story of people being bitten by vampires, only to findout that it may be true!As you can see, roleplaying games have their own set ofcommonalities and standards, just like television showshave. The details may differ from game to game, but thebasic structure always remains the same. What do all these story ideas have in common? They allsound like episodes of some TV shows. The fact is that alltelevision shows have a lot in common. They have to; it'sthe nature of television. They all must be shown on thesame networks during a very rigid schedule. All showsmust fit in either a half-hour or a full hour time slot. Oneepisode must air every week. Each episode must take a certain number of commercial breaks. They must be episodic, which means that every episode must be a complete storyin itself, but must also maintain continuity with everyother episode that has aired. There are other standardsthat shows typically follow, but you get the idea. Now PlayingPermission to photcopyThis is Now PlayingNow Playing is a game that blends the rules and structure of both television and roleplaying into a game thatplays like a roleplaying game, but feels like a TV show. Ithas the same basic structure as all roleplaying games. Italso follows the same formats and standards that all TVshows adhere to. With Now Playing, you will be able totake the setting of any television show that you alreadyknow a lot about, and create and run your own episodes ofthe show as a roleplaying game. As you play your games, you will feel as though you are in a TV show.1www.carnivoregames.comIntroductory Pack 1Copyright 2003 Carnivore Games

tionnd a f oThe TV show that you will be playinghere is called FPI. This is not a real showthat you can see on TV, but has beendesigned specifically for Now Playing, and is included in the Now Playing rulebook.fpiFPI stands for Foundation forParanormal Investigation. The leading cast(the roles you all play) is made up of members ofone chapter of this foundation. As members, you allhave a stake in some aspect of the paranormal, whether itis ghosts, Bigfoot, UFOs, or psychic phenomena. Some ofyou are scientific people, trying to prove or disprove theevents you investigate. Others have psychic powers, perform magic or in one way or another, exhibit paranormalbehavior. Still others embrace the phenomena and simplytry to learn as much about it as possible. The FPI is not ajust a group of ghost busters. It is a large, internationalcivilian organization dedicated to the study of these phenomena in an effort to uncover their mysteries.are ready to play. These are the stars of theshow. Offer these characters to the players.Let them choose the character they want toportray. Most of them are members of anFPI chapter. Two of them are guest starsthat play an important role in thisepisode, but will most likely not appear inany subsequent episodes.veal In stigrParanorma ti oFPIEach character has a number of traitsthat help to define who he is, and how he canbe played. These traits include Attributes, skills, gifts and faults.n FouAttributes represent physical and mental abilitiesthat help define who your character is. Attributes are generally not traits that you can increase quickly throughpractice, but instead increase gradually as you mature.Skills are learned abilities that your character canimprove through practice. Most require conscious effort toperform, such as Computer Use or Brawl. Others can beskills that the character has been trained to use almost byinstinct, such as Notice.Gifts are special qualities possessed by your characterthat can give him an advantage in the game. Some have adirect impact on the game system, and others simply addspice to the roleplaying. For instance, the Keen Eyesightgift will add a bonus to certain skill tests, where thePerfect Timing gift simply gives the Director the chance toadd some theatrics to the scenes.FPI takes place in the world of today. However, whether the cast believes it or not, some elements of theparanormal do indeed exist. There may actually be anancient aquatic reptile swimming about in the depths ofLoch Ness. A bizarre creature may indeed be terrorizingpeople and animals in the woods of New Jersey, and theSasquatch may be living and breeding in the wilds of NorthAmerica.Faults are like negative gifts. They are traits that helpdescribe the character, physically, mentally or socially. Some may have concrete effects on the game system, whileothers will make the role fun and challenging to play. Allfaults limit the character in one way or another. Forinstance, the Impulsive fault prevents the character frombeing cautious, and Handicap means that there is a physi-It is up to you to find out what is truth and what is fantasy. The Leading Castcal problem that limits what he can do or how he can do it.The next few pages include premade characters thatABOUT FUDGEFudge is a role-playing game written by Steffan O'Sullivan, with extensive input from the Usenet community of rec.games.design. Mike tends to try to take the lead in any situation, sometimes even when he does not have the right to do so.He’ll just automatically assume the lead and start blurtingout orders.Christina Mariani: Mike likes Christina and hasgreat respect for her talents. Like him, she’s a person ofaction, ready and willing to jump in and get things done. She’s also very smart, and very attractive. Although hetries to keep a professional relationship with her, he isquite taken with her. After all, an attractive woman who’spersonality fits his own is a hard woman to resist. But,since he has to work with her, he tries to keep things cool.Mike feels he has to watch out for Christina. She isquite impulsive, and although she’s intelligent, she hasmanaged to get herself into deep trouble by taking unnecessary risks. He could not bear to see anything bad happento her, and he can’t prevent her from entering into dangerous situations, so he keeps close to her and acts as her protector.Dr. David Walker: Walker’s a doctor; a man of medicine and research. He has a mellow attitude, and is notquite the active person that he and Christina are. This hassometimes slowed down their investigations, but his skillshave nevertheless proven quite useful.Mike Malone, Private EyeBrawn: GoodReasoning: FairAgility: FairPerception: GreatStamina: FairWill: GoodLuck: 3Income: MediocreRobert Dunn: He is familiar with Detective Dunnthrough his work as a private investigator. He's a down-toearth man, which makes him a good detective. Although hetends to a bit a bit gruff, he's a good man. Actually, Mikewould always prefer to work with him than with any othercop in Boston.Skills: Bluff (Mediocre), Brawl (Great), Criminology(Fair), Gun (Great), Stealth (Good), Gather Information(Great), Interrogate (Good), Intimidate (Good), Research(Fair), Run (Fair), Notice (Great), Sense Motive (Fair),Shadow (Good). The Big Dig: Mike knows only what he has seen on thenews and read in the paper. The Central Artery/TunnelProject, or the Big Dig, as it is usually called, is a big project that is meant to relieve much of the traffic on the current highways that run through the city. The projectincludes the construction of large bridges, and the diggingof several highway tunnels. A couple of these tunnelsextend partly under Boston Harbor. The project has beenin progress for many years, and is still years from completion. According to the news, the project is far behind schedule, and has greatly exceeded its budget. There have beenpeople who have lobbied to have the project terminated, but at this point, it just doesn't make sense to stop.Gifts: Keen Eyesight ( 1 to all sight-based Noticetests).Faults: Bossy, Decreased Income.Props: Flashlight, Revolver (Strength 2), Box of 50rounds, cell phone, Swiss Army knife, pocket notebook &pen, investigation kit (fingerprinting kit, rubber gloves,etc.).He was once a tough-as-nails police detective whoworked in the homicide division of the New York PoliceDepartment. He was trying to catch a serial killer. Hefound the killer, but what he saw shook him to the core. The killer turned out to be some kind of bizarre creature. He shot the thing three times in the chest and back, but itran away.Back plot: Mike has had no cases for weeks now whenan old client, a fisherman, called Mike out to the wharf tosee something he had found. It turned out to be a fish. Theold fisherman claimed that he had never seen anythinglike it, thought that it was a prehistoric fish that somehowescaped extinction. He knew that Mike is involved with theFPI, so he gave him a call. The fish was big and pale andugly, and did have a prehistoric look to it. But it was deadand half eaten, and Mike didn't think there was much hecould do. However, it made him think of Christina, and thethought of seeing her again lifted his spirits. He agreed tohave it looked at, and brought the fish to Christina's lab atthe Aquarium. In the aftermath, Internal Affairs walked all over him.Although he was not fired, he was fed up with the processand quit. He went into business for himself as a privateinvestigator, and soon found out about the FPI. He joinedup right away. The more he could learn about this stuff, hereasoned, the better prepared he would be when he wentup against another one!Now PlayingPermission to photcopy3www.carnivoregames.comIntroductory Pack 1Copyright 2003 Carnivore Games

ers the field practice he has gotten in the FPI to be a goodexperience. His training has been strictly in hospitals, andperforming field medicine like a paramedic is rather invigorating.Christina Mariani: As a capable scientist, Davidrespects her. She is also quite pleasant and helpful. However, she has a tendency to being bold and daring, andin his opinion, she spends too much time in the field, andnot enough in the lab. A good scientist is grounded inresearch and experimentation, not in gallivanting aroundthe globe to play with fish! Science, however intriguing, isnot an adventure. David has lost count of the times that hehas treated her as a result of some brave, but foolhardyadventure that she had undertaken. He just hopes thatsome day she'll learn to tone down the excitement, andfocus on what's important.Mike Malone: He's a cop, and there's no mistakingthat. Sure, he's a private investigator now, but he used tobe a cop, and he still acts it. Whenever they get into a tightsituation, he always takes charge. Not that there's anything wrong with it. This team needs leadership, and sofar, he's been quite good at it. Mike's a tough man, and notone to cross. David has had to treat several poor souls whogot in his way; of course, each one had gotten on the wrongside of the law, and the violence was justified.Dr. David Walker, Medical DoctorBrawn: FairReasoning: GreatAgility: GoodPerception: FairStamina: FairWill: FairLuck: 3Income: FairMike seems to have special feelings for Christina, although David doesn't think that she realizes it. ButDavid doesn't mind. In fact, it means that Mike is alwaysthere to keep her out of trouble when things get bad.Robert Dunn: David has met him once or twice whileinvestigating cases for the FPI, but does not know himwell. He's very gruff and serious, but seems to be a fairman, even though he has opposed them on occasion, heusually had good reason.Skills: Autopsy (Great), Computer Use (Fair),Diagnosis (Good), First Aid (Great), Notice (Good),Parapsychology (Mediocre), Research (Good), Treat Injury(Great). The Big Dig: David knows only what he has seen onthe news and read in the paper. He is veryrational and clear thinking. However, he has seen things inhis years as a doctor that cannot be explained by science. He became passionate about understanding these bizarrephenomena, and when he learned of the FPI he joinedright away. His primary interest in the FPI lies in medical phenomena. However, he is interested in just about any case thathis chapter investigates. The more he learns about theparanormal in general, the more knowledge he will have toapply to the cases that directly concern him.Back plot: Just this morning, David had gotten a callfrom Christina. Mike had brought a specimen to her andshe said that there was something about it that she needed his opinion on. Since it was his day off, he agreed. Shewas in a biology lab in the Aquarium, so he drove there tosee what she had for him. She and Mike were alreadythere, looking at the specimen, which turned out to ratherinteresting indeed David feels a moral obligation to help those who areinjured. This has caused him to miss out on importantaspects of a case simply because he had chosen to staybehind to look after an injured person. proof, and therefore never went public about them. Shejoined the FPI so that she can attempt to learn more aboutthese creatures and to have access to the resources sheneeds to gather proof. If anyone can find adventure in the field of marine biology, it is Christina. She is bold and daring, and is notsqueemish in the least. This mix tends to make her impulsive, and she will often walk right into dangerous situations without thinking about the consequences.Whenever she feels there is something that needs to besaid, she will just come right out and say it. She pays littleheed to ettiquette, and will come straight to the point, nomatter how rude. This is not intentional, and in fact, shewill never think that she said anything wrong.Mike Malone: He's an ex-cop that still thinks he isone. He now works as a private eye, and does a good job ofit. Christina mainly sees him through work with the FPI.He is every bit a man of action, and so they're always theones to go first into danger, which happens all too oftenwith the FPI. She knows that he likes her, but in whatway, she's not sure. He obviously respects her for her skillsand her active nature, but she's not certain if there's anything more to it.Dr. David Walker: Walker's a doctor; a man of medicine and research.
