ENGINE SERVICE MANUALSafety Information Wear appropriate hearing protection.This manual provides general and specific serviceprocedures essential for reliable engine operationand your safety. Since many variations in procedures,tools, and service parts are involved, advice for allpossible safety conditions and hazards cannot bestated. Wear correct work clothing. Do not wear rings, watches, or other jewelry. Restrain long hair.Read safety instructions before doing any service andtest procedures for the engine or vehicle. See relatedapplication manuals for more information.Disregard for Safety Instructions, Warnings, Cautions,and Notes in this manual can lead to injury, death ordamage to the engine or vehicle.3Fire prevention Make sure charged fire extinguishers are in thework area.NOTE: Check the classification of each fireextinguisher to ensure that the following firetypes can be extinguished.1. Type A — Wood, paper, textiles, and rubbish2. Type B — Flammable liquidsSAFETY TERMINOLOGYThree terms are used to stress your safety and safeoperation of the engine: Warning, Caution, and NoteWarning: A warning describes actions necessary toprevent or eliminate conditions, hazards, and unsafepractices that can cause personal injury or death.3. Type C — Electrical equipmentBatteriesBatteries produce highly flammable gas during andafter charging. Caution: A caution describes actions necessaryto prevent or eliminate conditions that can causedamage to the engine or vehicle.Always disconnect the main negative batterycable first. Always connect the main negative battery cablelast.Note: A note describes actions necessary for correct,efficient engine operation. Avoid leaning over batteries. Protect your eyes.SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Do not expose batteries to open flames or sparks.Vehicle Do not smoke in workplace. Compressed airMake sure the vehicle is in neutral, the parkingbrake is set, and the wheels are blocked beforedoing any work or diagnostic procedures on theengine or vehicle. Limit shop air pressure for blow gun to 207 kPa(30 psi).Work area Use approved equipment. Keep work area clean, dry, and organized. Do not direct air at body or clothing. Keep tools and parts off the floor. Wear safety glasses or goggles. Make sure the work area is ventilated and well lit. Wear hearing protection. Make sure a First Aid Kit is available. Use shielding to protect others in the work area.Safety equipmentTools Use correct lifting devices. Make sure all tools are in good condition. Use safety blocks and stands. Make sure all standard electrical tools aregrounded.Protective measures Wear protective glasses and safety shoes.

4 ENGINE SERVICE MANUALCheck for frayed power cords before using powertools.Fluids under pressure Use extreme caution when working on systemsunder pressure. Follow approved procedures only.Fuel Do not over fill the fuel tank. Over fill creates a firehazard. Do not smoke in the work area. Do not refuel the tank when the engine is running.Removal of tools, parts, and equipment Reinstall all safety guards, shields, and coversafter servicing the engine. Make sure all tools, parts, and service equipmentare removed from the engine and vehicle after allwork is done.
