Sri Lanka and the Ramayana The Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit epicattributed to the poet Valmiki and animportant part of the Hindu canon. According to the Ramayana, king Rāvanabrought Sita Devi from India in a “PushpakaVimana” Ramayana has had a profound impact on artand culture in the Indian subcontinent andSoutheast Asia. Sri Lanka shares a special bond with Indiageographically, historically, culturally andspiritually. The Ramayana begins with Ayodhya in Indiaand climaxes at Lankapura (Sri Lanka).3

Thiru Konneshwaram TempleThiru Koneshwaram was built by sage Agasthyar as per the instructions of LordShiva who was impressed by the devotion of King Ravana. Thiru Koneshwaram Temple (37)Thiru Koneshwaram wasbuilt by sage Agasthyaras per the instructions ofLord Shiva who wasimpressed by thedevotion of KingRavana. Lord Rama alsooffered his prayers onhis return to get himselfrid of the BrahmaasthiDosham.

Kanniya (40) The place where King Ravana carried out thelast rites for his mother. When he was not able tofind water to perform his rites, he in sheer angerpierced his trishul on the ground seven times,and water started gushing out immediately. It isbelieved that the anger of the king subsided onseeing the water and similarly the warmth of thewater also reduced. The temperature of thewater is different in all the seven wells.

King Ravana Ravana was a King of Sri Lanka.A devotee of God SivaHe was son of Saint VisrarvasaRavana's father was also reported to be a Brahmin sagecalled Visravasa, which makes him a Brahmin, Because of his penance and devotion to the godBrahma, he was granted a boon: it was impossible foranything to kill him, except man Ravana – eight brothers and one sisiter (Surpanakha) Ravana was a very powerful Emperor.

UssangodaIn battle with the Rakshasas, Lord Hanuman’s tail was set on fire which he used totorch parts of Ravana’s empire. Ussangoda is one such barren area where the soilcontinues to have a blackened and scorched effect. Gurulupotha (3) Access: Gurulupotha is on theKandy – Mahiyangana, road atthe 63 km post, 4 km fromHasalaka town. Trek down 2km (approx 4 km both ways)from Gurulupotha Rest House.The trek will take 1 ½ hoursboth ways. Legend: Aircraft repair centerin the capital city of KingRavana. In Valmiki’s depictionKing Ravana’s Vimanaresembled a huge peacock.,The name Gurulupotha meansparts of birds.

Ravana Cave (13) Access – from Bandarawela on A16 route, passKumawella, take A23 route, pass Ella town, close to 26km post. Turn off 3 Km from Ella on Wellawaya Road.Go up 2 km to Ravana Ella Temple. Trek up hill for about2 Km (45 mts one way).

Ravana Cave These tunnels prove beyonddoubt the architecturalbrilliance of King Ravana. These tunnels served as aquick means of transportthrough the hills and also as asecret passage. These tunnels networked allthe important cities, airportsand dairy farms. A close lookat these tunnels indicates thatthey are man-made and notnatural formation.

Gavagala(Ghoushala) This is situated atHarasbedda on NuweraEliya - Walapane Road. King Ravana dairy farmwas here. Milk was air lifted to thecapital of Lankapura fromhere using Vimana’s. Thestone pillars here has theworn out marks cast byconstant use of tyingropes on them.

Sita Eliya temple The stream by the side ofthe temple. Sitadevi saidto have bathed in thisstream. The foot prints of LordHanuman’s are found.Some are of small sizeand some are of largesize, which tells us of theimmense powers ofhanuman transforminghimself into any size.

Frotoft estate,Ramboda In this area, there are many large trees whose bright red blooms addcolour to the scenery. These flowers are called Sita flowers. Thepeculiarity of these flowers is the configuration of the petal’s, stamenand pistil’s, which resemble a human figure carrying a bow and is said torepresent Lord Rama. These flowers are unique only to this area in thewhole of Sri Lanka.

Sita Pond There is a pond foundon the en route, isbelieved to have beenformed by the tears ofSitadevi and has notdried up even duringsevere droughts whenthe adjoining riversdry up.

Mani Kattuther(9) On top of Labukalleestate. Lord Hanuman metSitadevi, then on his wayto announce the happyinformation to LordRama, rested on this hilltop. An open temple withstatues of Lord Rama ,Sitadevi, Lakshmanaand Lord hanumanstands on top of it. Locals very often visitthis temple.

Ishtripura / Konda Kattu Gala (11) Access:Welimada town /Udapussalawa Roard/ Lunuwatt/Thrivangama temple (about 17.5km).Proceed on Udapussalawa road fromWelimada town. Turn off to LunuwatteRoad. Pass Lunuwatte Town and proceedto Kirivanagama (13 km from Welimada).From Kiriwanagama temple, trek approx. 1hour to Isthripura caves (about 3 km oneway).

IsthripuraIshtripura means an area of women in Sinhalese. This was one of the places towhich King Ravana shifted Sitadevi as a precautionary measure which he wasforced to take by Lord Hanuman’s advent. Isthirppura Cave Ishtripura means an areaof women in Sinhalese. This was one of theplaces to which KingRavana shifted Sitadevias a precautionarymeasure which he wasforced to take by LordHanuman’s advent. There are lots of tunnelsand caves in this area. Itis interconnected to allthe major areas of KingRavana’s city.

Isthripura CaveSitadevi took bath in this very stream and dried her hair sittingon a rock and put clips to her hair hence this rock is knownas Konda Kattu Gala.

Ravana GodaA network of man-made tunnels and caves, Ravanagoda served as a hiding place forRavana to keep Sita. The tunnels connected all the important cities, airports anddairy farms. Ravana Goda (12) The place where Sitadevi stayed duringher transit. This area is also linked with tunnels andcaves, which runs through to other parts ofKing Ravana’s kingdom. This is situated in the Kotmala areaopposite to Ramboda rock.

YudhaganawaYudhaganawa was the primary battlefield of the Ramayana. Yudhuganawa (18) Location: situated in the midst of thejungle Wasgamuwa. Legend : It is said that this particular pieceof land can never bear any vegetation asthis served as the battlefield. World’s end or Pathala Lok (19) Location : This is situated atHorton Plains close to NuweraEliya. Legend : World’s end orPathala Lok is the place whereMahi Ravanan had hidden bothLord Rama and Lakshmana whowere later rescued by LordHanuman and brought themback carrying them on his broadshoulders. Minimum time needed at thesite : 3 hours Special mention: Involve 8 km

Sanjeevani drops (21) At different points of time during thewar, both Lord Rama andLakshmana were hit by powerfularrows, fell unconscious and tobring them back to life LordHanuman was instructed to fetchthe life saving herbs fromHimalaya. The places identified in Sri Lankaare all in one line.

Hanuman went to the hill,lifted the whole hill andbrought it, as he was notable to identify the lifesaving herbs alone. Parts from the hill fell onfive places in Sri Lanka,Rumasala in Galle,Dolu Kanda in HiripitiyaRitigala on the HabaranaAnuradhapura road,Thalladi in MannarKachchativu in the north.

Dolu Kanda, Sanjeevani drops (25) Location: Hiripitiya Access : 15 kmsfrom Wariyapola.Minimum timeneeded at the site :one hour

HiripitiyaAccess 1 - through Wariyapola ;1km from Wariyapola junctiontowards Kurunegala isHorambewa junction. Turn righttowards Ganewatte which isanother 12.7 Km. From there toHitripitiya is another 13 Km(approx 27 Km from Wariyapolatown). The turn off to HiripitiyaMountain is near the 13Km post,turn towards the Makulwewaschool. It’s another 8km to thebase of the mountain. (total 35 Kmto Dolukanda base fromWariyapola).Access 2 – through Kurunegala: Proceed along Dambulla road,2.2 Km from Kurunegala town isthe turn off to Hiripitiya. Its 20.8Km to Hiripitiya from the turn off.

Dondra/ Seenigama/ Hikkaduwa (16) Location: By the side of Colombo toMatara main road. The southern most partof Sri Lanka is called Dondra and furtherup towards west is called SeenigamaHikkaduwa. Legend: These are the places from whereSugreeva king of the Vanara’s started hisonslaught on King Ravana’s forces. Access: Colombo-Matara main road

Sita Waka (17) Location : situated close to Avissawella. Legend : An interesting as well as shocking episodetook place here. To shatter Lord Rama’s confidence andhalt his progress during the war, Indrajith eldest son ofKing Ravana played a trick, with Sitadevi’s look alike.Indrajith beheaded the look alike in front of LordHanuman thinking that it will stop the advancing forces ofLord Rama. There is a stone in this area called“Rampathagala” with one foot mark which is traditionallybelieved by the people as Lord Rama’s foot mark. Thisplace is known as Sita Waka

Dunuvila (19) Legend : Dunuwilla is the placefrom where Lord Rama fired thebrahmaastharam at KingRavana, which eventually killedhim. Minimum time needed at thesite : 20 minutes

Dunuvila Dhunu means arrowand Vila Means Lake.This place got itsname because LordRama fired his arrowfrom this lake.

DunuvilaDunuvila is the area from which Lord Rama fired the Brahmaasthram at King Ravanawho was directing the war from Laggala meaning target rock. Dunuvilla One of the access:Kandy / Matale / Rattota/ Rivestone /Illukkumbura /Pallegama / Hettipola Location : In the Mataledistrict on the out skirtsof Wasgamuwa NationalPark. Located near the40km post on theHasalaka –Wasgamuwa road.

Laggala The cartels behind the Dunuvila lakeare called Laggala which whentranslated into English gives us themeaning target rock. Laggala served as a sentry point tothe King Ravana’s army. This hill is geographically thehighest part of the northern region ofKing Ravana’s city and on a clearday the north east side that is ThiruKoneshwaran and north west sidethat is Talai mannar could be seeneven today. King Ravana is believed to havedone meditation on this rock andprayed to Lord Shiva at ThiruKoneshwaran from this point.

YehangalaYehangala or bedrock is the rock upon which Ravana’s body was kept afterhis death. This was done to allow his countrymen to pay their last respectsto him. Yehangala This is situated in the Mahiyanganaya –Wasgamuwa road. King Ravana’s body after his death was keptupon this rock. Yehangala meaning bedrock. His body was kept here for his countrymen topay their last respects to their dear departedking. Geographically this rock is visible from milesaway on its 3 sides
