Transform Cityscapes with Energy-Efficient LightCN TowerToronto, CanadaPhotography Jerrold LitwinenkoTransforming the CN TowerFor nearly a decade, the 553 m (1,815 ft) CN Tower was minimally lit in aneffort to conserve energy while awaiting a better long-term lighting solution.Following extensive evaluation, a Color Kinetics lighting system was chosento visually transform the Tower’s appearance while also reducing energyconsumption and maintenance requirements. According to the CN Tower’scalculation, the entire LED installation consumes 60% less energy than the fullyilluminated Tower of the 1990s, and 10% less energy than the previous system.Lighting Control and ConfigurationWith its scalable design, Light System Manager offers the ideal controllersolution for the CN Tower project. Installed with standard Ethernet cablingand network hardware, Light System Manager manages the 1,300 highperformance lighting luminaires mounted within the Tower’s elevator shaftsand antenna tower.E For full details on using thesoftware modules to design yourlighting installation, refer to theLight System Manager user guideavailable at www.colorkinetics.com/ls/controllers/lsm/What’s in a Light System Manager Light Show?A light show is a set of digital instructions orchestrating how and when yourlighting installation displays effects. The CN Tower lighting design team createdmood, interest, and visual impact by customizing the appearance and behaviorof standard Light System Composer effects with unique color palettes, sequences, and playback zones. Additionally, via the show scheduling feature, specifically themed light shows display automatically to coincide with nationalevents and holidays.Light System Manager   Product Guide3

Light System ManagerEnvironmentsMulti-zone InstallationHeadquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts, Color Kinetics is a global LEDlighting innovation and product design center for Color Kinetics. The 4,645m2 (50,000 ft 2) office, laboratory, and showroom space utilizes LED lightingtechnology throughout. Light System Manager manages the LED lighting zonesin the building, including the lobby, conference rooms, work spaces, exteriorsignage, and product demonstration areas.Lighting Zone DetailsThe lobby space features subtly animated light shows displayed on both RGBand white LED lighting systems. 20 unique shows ranging in duration from 10minutes to 12 hours gently scroll across the ceiling, wall surfaces, and alcoves.Additionally, the luminaires installed directly above the reception desk arecontrolled by Light System Manager as a separate region within the lobbyzone, allowing for warm white illumination focused on the receptionist workspace and visitor seating area, as needed. How it WorksLight System Manager uses two-dimensional maps to identify and control thelighting components in each lighting zone. The lobby map, for example, contains four rectangular clusters of luminaires, varying in size. The largerectangular area corresponds to the main ceiling, and the smaller rectangularareas match the wall adjacent to the elevator, the ceiling adjacent to theelevator, and the wall behind the reception desk.0 seconds60120180240300360420480540600The lobby map allows Light System Manager to accurately display light showsaccording to the position of each luminaire. Based on a schedule, LightSystem Manager continuously scrolls images across the lobby map, creatinga seamless animated effect. Because each image is configured to be largerthan the map dimensions, only a portion of the image is displayed at anygiven time.Playback ControlsOnce set up, Light System Manager functions as a standalone device thatautomatically displays one or more scheduled light shows in each lightingzone. The lobby schedule calls for unique shows each day of the week and oncertain holidays. Additionally, Antumbra Ethernet Keypads installed in multiplelocations allow users to override a scheduled lobby show at the touch of abutton and select from six additional choices.4Light System Manager   Product GuideColor Kinetics Headquarters and Showroom

Architectural ExteriorA popular Philadelphia landmark, Boathouse Row comprises twelveboating clubs in ten architecturally distinct buildings along a half-milestretch of the Schuylkill River. The lighting system from Color Kineticsreplaces a 30-year-old incandescent system that required frequentand costly maintenance.Boathouse RowPhiladelphia, PennsylvaniaPhotography Jacques-Jean TiziouLike the CN Tower, Boathouse Row uses LED lighting to transform awell-known but static exterior scene into an expressive canvas. Thelighting design team envisioned a primary display of white light withthe capability to punctuate the boathouses with vibrant color andvisual effects for special occasions. The designers accomplished theirgoal by creating shows with the Show Designer module in Light SystemComposer. The straightforward and easy-to-use software interfaceenabled the team to focus on the creative aspects of the project ratherthan configuration. New users were able to program and submit lightshows for conceptual approval in a matter of minutes, with limitedprior experience using Light System Manager.Architectural InteriorThe restored Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi opened its doors onlucky 7.7.07 (July 7, 2007) after suffering extensive damage fromHurricane Katrina. About Light System Composer SoftwareManagement ToolLight System Composer is a full-featured software package containing thefollowing modules:Management Tool—When connected to a lighting network, the Management Toolmodule automatically discovers all lighting system components, allowing you tocreate a map of the installation. The map identifies all hardware so that the LightSystem Engine controller can send accurate light output instructions. Additionally,Management Tool allows you to create groups of luminaires that can have colorsor effects applied to them using Show Designer or the Web Interface.Show DesignerShow Designer—The Show Designer module enables you to author and refinedynamic light shows using eight fixed color and chasing color effects, twoanimated image effects, and two geometric effects. You can apply pre-definedeffects to groups of luminaires, and then modify those effects by modifyingtheir parameters. Show Designer also allows you to simulate your show via theLive Play simulation feature, which displays the light shows on the luminaires inyour installation.Workflow: Creating and Displaying a Light Show1. Create a MapThe first step in creating a light show is to map the installation. The map links alllighting luminaires and interfaces (power/data supplies) to the Light System Enginecontroller, and acts as a virtual representation of the installation. The ManagementTool module enables you to automatically discover all lighting system componentsand build the map. When new luminaires are added to an existing installation, orwhen working off site, the Management Tool module also allows you to manuallybuild a fully functional virtual map.Static Color Scene2. Create a ZoneAccess the Web Interface, and click the Config tab. Click Zones, and upload yourmap file to create a new zone.3. Create a Dynamic Light Show or Static Color SceneAfter the zone is created, create a dynamic light show or static color scene.Dynamic Light ShowUse Show Designer to create dynamic lighting effects. Show Designer lets you addeffects to each group of luminaires in the installation and then modify the effectparameters to create unique results. Use the Live Play feature to test and refineyour show. Once your show is created, use the built-in Web Interface to uploadyour show file and any related image assets. Each animation effect requires a zipfile containing the animation images. Each image scroll effect requires an image file(.png, .jpg, or .bmp)Static Color SceneUse the Web Interface to create static color scenes. Colors can be applied togroups of lights in your installation. These groups are created in Management Tool, and are assigned to point-and-click areas through the group map editor, which islocated in the Configuration tab of the Web Interface. You can use the scene editorto select colors live on your installation while the selected scene is actively playing.4.
