r AthletealohK U ScAs I sat in a doctor’s office waitingroom last month, eavesdroppingon two older men, I piped upwhen their conversation hit a lull.“Are your triplets natural?” I askedthe man who referred to his 30-year-olddaughter (a triplet).“Yes,” he replied, a little surprised bythe question.“Were they once Scholar Athletes forLexington Family Magazine?”A big grin creased his face as Phil Heinksaid yes again.Bingo. How could I forget our onlyScholar Athlete triplets? As we celebrate the 20th anniversaryof the Scholar Athlete feature, which issponsored by Kentucky Utilities, I’ve beenbusy tracking down past honorees. That day in the doctor’s office, I wasfeeling lucky because that morning I readin a local paper about the new releases byLexington musician Ben Sollee. His other claim to fame? He was ourfirst ever Scholar Athlete, a cello-playingcatcher/outfielder at Winburn Middle.Back to Phil Heink and his threedaughters. Anna, Eleanora and Jeannawere Scholar Athletes in August 1999when they were soccer-playing seventhgraders at Mary Queen of the HolyRosary. The day after re-connecting with theHeinks, I was driving to work on a hotAugust morning when I spotted a youngman with a giant Army knapsackstrapped to his back.It was so heavyhe couldbarely stand up. Still, he was runningon the sidewalk, sweat pouring from hisbody.I pulled over, rolled down the windowand the runner bounded over to the cargreeting me with a big smile. Say hello toNathan Gillespie. Scholar Athlete, July2014. Star tennis player at LafayetteHigh.Well, you never know where you’llbump into a former Scholar Athlete.I have interviewed and written thestories for all 240 of these exceptionalteens. (Actually counting siblings, twinsand triplets in 240 installments we havehad 211 Scholar Athletes).Meeting these young people has beenan exciting project – and my favorite jobeach month for the magazine.I have so many fond memories of theseinterviews. Here are two – 13 years apart.Sam Bowie and Landon Young. In February 2003, our Scholar Athletewas Samantha Bowie, a seventh gradebasketball player at Sayre and thedaughter of the former UK and NBA star.In the middle of the interview, Sam, allseven-foot-something, draped himselfacross the kitchen island and spoke withpassion, insight and sensitivity about asubject close to all of our hearts. No, notthe Wildcats – parenting. That was a memorable moment.Another came in 2016 at Landon Young’shouse. At Lafayette High, Landon was a statewrestling, discus andshot putNathanGillespie18 www.lexingtonfamily.comchampion, and also a 6-foot-7, 305-poundAll-American offensive tackle now at UK.Landon was wearing boots, jeans and ahuge belt buckle, and spoke with a deepdrawl that screamed masculinity. In the middle of the interview, theconversation turned to knitting.Landon excels at that too – hisgrandmother taught him – and he poppedout of his chair, grabbed his latest effort(a scarf) and placed it in the center of thetable where he and his parents marveledat the stitching and his handiwork. That too was a memorable moment. When it comes to memorablemoments, my reporter’snotepad runneth over.Month after month, I arrive at a newhome and the front door swings open asI’m ushered inside where families sharetheir stories and express feelings theyhold dear. We laugh a lot and more thanonce a parent choked up.When I leave I have a bounce in mystep because of the compelling material Igleaned for a good story and because Ijust enjoyed another fun interview. So for all those families who havewelcomed me into their homes, thankyou. Twenty years has been a great ride and the trip isn’t over yet.The next 20 years starts this monthwith a new Scholar Athlete, Amina ElAmin, on Page 46.The Triplets:Eleanora HeinkDenning, Jeanna HeinkPanella & Anna Heink
