Second Sunday in Ordinary TimeJanuary 17, 2021A Time to Gather Stones.A Time to Cast AwayPRAYER of Barry Black,Chaplain of the U.S.Senate, following thetragic siege on the U.S.Capitol and the vote toconfirm the election ofJoseph Biden Jr. aspresident of theUnited States."There is a time for everything under the heavens."The beginning of a new term in our nation's leadership should be a moment of hope for people. Afterall that has happened in the first weeks of this newyear, we need to believe in what we the people cando if we give it our collective best. Despite whateverreservations and disappointment and fears we have ifone or more of those elected were not the persons wechose, still if we believe in democracy we shouldhave confidence that the wisdom of many of our fellow citizens will eventually lead us to a better placeif we choose to live and grow side by side with oneanother, not in ghettos of distrust.Lord of our lives and sovereign of our belovednation, we deplore the desecration of theUnited States Capitol building, the sheddingof innocent blood, the loss of life, and thequagmire of dysfunction that threatenour democracy. As a country we find our shared vision of who weare in our US Constitution. This great documentgives us and those we elect a direction. It sets forthinalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We need to shape and support the good efforts of those who promote the rights of all. We needto correct those laws and behaviors that diminish thevalue and dignity of human life. These tragedies have reminded us that wordsmatter and that the power of life and deathis in the tongue. We have been warned that eternal vigilancecontinues to be freedom's price. No laws are perfect. Nor are the people who draftthem or enforce them. But our future depends ongiving our leaders and civil servants the support andcorrection they need. Let us pray for those in theWhite House, the Capitol and the Supreme Court thatthey do their part to bring more and more of us together in the great work of building a just, peacefuland honorable society.Lord, you have helped us remember that weneed to see in each other a common humanitythat reflects your image. You have strengthened our resolve to protectand defend the Constitution of the United Statesagainst all enemies domestic as well as foreign.Use us to bring healing and unity to our hurtingand divided nation and world. We find our vision as believers in God's word. Ittells of "a time to gather stones, and a time to castthem away.(Eccl. 3:5)" May 2021 be for us a time togather the dreams we have for our country, thestones with which we can build health, growth inlearning, happiness in living and caring and believing what truly matters. May it be or us a time to castaway our nightmares, the stones of hatred that shattered our city streets, our sacred spaces of worshipand government, the stones of violent words or actions. It's time to use our hands and minds to rebuildcommunities, to shape our world in the image of theKingdom of God. This is God's grace and dream forus. Our gift back to Him will be what we do now asstewards of His creation.God bless!Thank you for what you have blessed ourlawmakers to accomplish in spite ofthreats to liberty.Bless and keep us.Drive far from us all wrong desires, inclineour hearts to do your will and guide ourfeet on the path of peace. And God bless America. We pray in your sovereign name. Amen.Fr John3

Second Sunday in Ordinary TimeJanuary 17, 2021St. Thomas Aquinas NovenaStarts:January 19thIntro Prayer Grant me grace, O merciful God,to desire ardently all that is pleasing to Thee,to examine it prudently,to acknowledge it truthfully, and to accomplish it perfectly, for the praise and glory of Thy name.In particular, please obtain the favor I ask duringthis novena:(Make you request here)Grant me, O Lord my God,a mind to know you,a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance inwaiting for you,and a hope of finallyembracing you.Amen.Daily Prayer God Himself is the rule and mode ofvirtue. Our faith is measured by divine truth, ourhope by the greatness of His power and faithfulaffection, our charity by His goodness. His truth, power and goodness outreach any measure ofreason. We can certainly never believe, trust orlove God more than, or even as much as, weshould. Extravagance is impossible. Here is novirtuous moderation, no measurable mean; themore extreme our activity, the better we are.Concluding Prayer Creator of all things, truesource of light and wisdom, origin of all being, graciously let a ray of your light penetrate thedarkness of my understanding. Take from me thedouble darkness in which I have been born, anobscurity of sin and ignorance.Give me a keen understanding, a retentivememory, and the ability to grasp things correctlyand fundamentally. Grant me the talent of beingexact in my explanations and the ability to expressmyself with thoroughness and charm.Point out the beginning, direct the progress, andhelp in the completion. I ask this through JesusChrist our Lord. Amen.10

Here weare in January and we at St. John’s school have begunanother semester in school, in person! Our God is anamazing miracle worker and we rely on His protectioneach and every day.The two other reasons we are able to accomplish thisfeat are due to our amazing teachers and families.Walking through the doors of our school one trulyfeels part of a community, united in purpose: to enableour precious children to receive an excellent Catholiceducation, in person, is first and foremost on ourminds and in our hearts. This would not be possiblewithout the dedicated faculty and staff we have beenblessed to obtain. They serve our students selflesslyeach and every day, putting in many extra hours to becertain that each person, whether attending virtually orin person, is connected to their classmates, as well asachieving as a scholar. Our faculty and staff could not achieve these goals ifit were not for the involvement and participation ofour families. The past year has been a strain for all ofus in many ways, yet many families are making hugesacrifices in putting off travel, or gathering with relatives and friends, in order to keep our students, facultyand staff safe and in school. Families who receive thedreaded positive result are quick to inform the schooland remain in quarantine to keep everyone else safe. The attitude of others before self is the gold standardof our faith and the driving ideal of our Catholic beliefs. This is what sets us apart and propels us forwardas a community. We have the promise of every goodthing to look forward to in 2021 and invite you to continue praying for us as we make that journey.“For I know the plans I have for you, declares theLord, plans for welfare and not for evil,to give you a future and a hope.” —Jeremiah 29:11Peace of Christ in all things,Valerie Shippen, PrincipalInstagram: sjspeabody@sjspeabody Twitter: sjspeabody11

Each Parish should host their own Eucharistic Holy Hour. Where there are two or more Parishes that are linked, it is desirable to have the Holy Hour at each individual Parish. Where there is one Parish with multiple worship sites, a specific site should be selected for the Holy Hour, perhaps on a rotating basis.
