RCS4640NPETROL CHAINSAWImportant! It is essential that you read the instructions in this manual beforeassembling, maintaining and operating this machine.

English (Original Instructions)Thank you for buying a Ryobi chainsaw.Your chainsaw has been engineered and manufactured toRyobi’s high standard for dependability, ease of operation, and operator safety. Properly cared for, it will give youyears of rugged, trouble-free performance. Some regions have regulations that restrict the use ofthe product to some operations. Check with your localauthority for advice.Be sure that the saw chain stops moving when thethrottle control trigger is released.GENERAL PRECAUTIONS Know your tool. Read the operator’s manual carefully.Learn the saw’s applications and limitations as well asthe specific potential hazards related to this tool. Do not operate a chainsaw with one hand. Seriousinjury to the operator, helpers, and/or bystandersmay result from one-handed operation. A chainsaw isintended for two-handed use. Do not operate a chainsaw when you are fatigued.Never operate a chainsaw when you are tired or underthe influence of medication, drugs, or alcohol. Keep all parts of your body away from the saw chainwhen the engine is running. Always carry the chainsaw with the engine stoppedand the brake engaged, the guide bar and saw chainto the rear, and the silencer away from your body. When transporting the chainsaw, use the appropriateguide bar scabbard. Turn off the engine before putting the chainsaw down.Do not leave the engine running unattended. As anadditional safety precaution, apply the chain brakebefore putting down the saw. Do not cut vines and/or small undergrowth (less than76 mm (3 inch) in diameter). Silencer surfaces are very hot during and afteroperation of the chainsaw; keep all body parts awayfrom the silencer. Serious burns may occur if contactis made with the silencer. Always hold the chainsaw with both hands when theengine is running. Use a firm grip with thumbs andfingers encircling the chainsaw handles. Never let anyone use your chainsaw who has notreceived adequate instructions in its proper use. Thisapplies to rentals as well as privately owned saws. Before you start the engine, make sure the saw chainis not contacting any object. Operate the chainsaw only in well ventilated areas. Always have a fire extinguisher available when usingchainsaw. Use guide bar cover during transport and storage. The chainsaw should always be used with correctlymounted spiked bumper. Do not adapt your powerhead to a bow guide or useit to power any attachments or devices not listed foryour saw.READ ALL INSTRUCTIONSIntended useThis chainsaw is designed for cutting branches, trunks, logs and beams of a diameter determined by the cuttinglength of the guide bar. It is only designed to cut wood. Itis only to be used outdoors, by adults.Do not use the chainsaw for any purpose not listed above. This chainsaw is not to be used for professional treeservices. It is not to be used by children or by personsnot wearing adequate personal protective equipment andclothing.Residual risksEven when using the chainsaw as intended, there remainsa residual risk of harm which cannot be fully prevented. The following list of potential hazards should be read andunderstood. You should pay extra attention and care tothese items to reduce the risk of occurrence or injury. Contact with exposed cutting teeth and saw chain. Access to rotating parts (the saw chain). Unexpected, abrupt movement (kick back) of theguide bar. Flying chain parts (thrown off or broken). Flying material (cut from the work piece). Inhalation of saw dust and particles or emissions fromthe petrol engine. Skin contact with petrol/oil. Loss of hearing if no hearing protective equipmentworn during use.GENERAL SAFETY RULESWARNINGThe warnings, labels, and instructions found in thissection of the operator’s manual are for your safety.Failure to follow all instructions may result in seriouspersonal injury. Safe operation of this tool requires thatyou read and understand this operator’s manual andall labels affixed to the tool. Safety is a combination ofusing common sense, staying alert, and knowing howyour saw works.PROPER CLOTHING FOR SAFETY Clothing must be sturdy and snug-fitting but allowcomplete freedom of movement. Always wear longpants made of heavy material to help protect yourlegs from contact with branches and brush. To reduce Do not operate a chainsaw that is damaged, improperlyadjusted, or not completely and securely assembled.1

English (Original Instructions)the risk of cut injuries, wear pants or chaps thatcontain pads of cut retardant material. Never wearscarves, ties, jewellery or other items of clothing, whichmight get caught in the equipment, in brush or onbranches. Secure hair so it is above shoulder. Wear safety boots with a good tread (with non-slipsoles). Wear non-slip, heavy-duty protective gloves. Wear eye protection with side shields marked tocomply with EN 166 as well as hearing and headprotection when operating the product. Keep bystanders and animals out of the work area. Donot allow other persons to be nearby during starting orcutting with the chainsaw.NOTE: The size of the work area depends on the job beingperformed as well as the size of the tree or work pieceinvolved. For example, felling a tree requires a larger workarea than making other cuts, i.e., bucking cuts etc.PUSH AND PULLThe reaction force is always opposite to the direction thechain is moving. Thus, the operator must be ready tocontrol the pull when cutting on the bottom edge of the barand the push when cutting along the top edge.NOTE: Your chainsaw has been fully factory tested. It isnormal to find some slight lubricant residue on the saw.REFUELLING (DO NOT SMOKE!) To reduce the risk of fire and burn injury, handle fuelwith care. It is highly flammable. Mix and store fuel in a container approved for petrol. Mix fuel outdoors where there are no sparks or flames. Select bare ground, stop the engine, and allow it tocool before refuelling. Loosen the fuel cap slowly to release pressure and tokeep fuel from escaping around the cap. Tighten the fuel cap securely after refuelling. Wipe spilled fuel from the unit. Move 9 m away fromrefuelling site before starting engine. Never attempt to burn off spilled fuel under anycircumstances.MAINTENANCE PRECAUTIONS Never operate a chainsaw that is damaged, improperlyadjusted, or is not completely and securely assembled. Be sure that the saw chain stops moving when thethrottle control trigger is released. If the saw chainmoves at idling speed, the carburettor may needadjusting. Refer to “Operation-adjusting idling speed”later in this manual. If the saw chain still moves atidling speed after adjustment has been made, contacta service dealer for adjustment and discontinue useuntil the repair is made. Keep the handles dry, clean, and free of lubricant orfuel mixture. Follow the sharpening and maintenance instructionsfor the saw chain. Use only the replacement guide bars and low kickbackchains specified for your saw. You must never modifyor remove parts from this product or use parts notrecommended by Ryobi. This will increase the risk ofinjury.BASIC PRECAUTIONS IN THE CUTTING/WORK AREA Do not stand on any unstable surface while using yourchainsaw, that includes ladders, scaffolds, trees, etc. Do not start cutting until you have a clear work area, secure footing, and a planned retreat path from thefalling tree. Do not cut from a ladder, this is extremely dangerous. Use extreme caution when cutting small-size brushand saplings because slender material may catch thesaw chain and be whipped toward you or pull you offbalance. When cutting a limb under tension, be alert for springback so that you will not be struck when the tension inthe wood fibres is released. Do not operate a chainsaw in a tree unless you havebeen specifically trained to do so. Beware of the emission of exhaust gases, lubricantmist and saw dust. This product is very noisy when operating, to preventlong term hearing damage, wear hearing protectionand keep other persons 15 m away from the workarea. Operating similar tools nearby increases risk ofinjury. Take frequent breaks. Use of hearing protection reduces the ability to hearwarnings (shouts or alarms). The operator must payextra attention to what is going on in the work area.WARNINGThe risk of kickback may increase if non-approvedguide bar and chain combinations are used. Refer tospecifications table for qualified replacement guide barand chain combinations.WARNINGAll chainsaw service, other than the items in theoperator’s manual maintenance instructions, should beperformed by competent chainsaw service personnel. If improper tools are used to remove the flywheel orclutch, or if an improper tool is used to hold the flywheelin order to remove the clutch, structural damage to theflywheel could occur which could subsequently causethe flywheel to burst and serious injury could result.2

English (Original Instructions)KICK-BACKHereditary factors, exposure to cold and dampness, diet, smoking and work practices are all thought to contribute tothe development of these symptoms. There are measuresthat can be taken by the operator to possibly reduce theeffects of vibration: Kick-back may occur when the nose of the guide bartouches an object or when the wood closes in andpinches the saw chain in the cut. The nose of guidebar contact in some cases may cause a lightning-fastreverse reaction kicking the guide bar up and backtoward the operator. Pinching the saw chain along thetop of the guide bar may push the guide bar rapidlyback toward the operator. Either of these reactionsmay cause you to lose control of the saw which couldresult in serious personal injury. Do not rely exclusivelyupon the safety devices built into your saw. As achainsaw user, you should take several steps to keepyour cutting jobs free from accident or injury.a. Keep your body warm in cold weather. When operatingthe unit wear gloves to keep the hands and wristswarm. It is reported that cold weather is a major factorcontributing to Raynaud’s Syndrome.b. After each period of operation, exercise to increaseblood circulation.c. Take frequent work breaks. Limit the amount ofexposure per day.d. Injuries may be caused, or aggravated by prolongeduse of a tool. When using any tool for prolongedperiods, ensure you take regular breaks.1. With a basic understanding of kick-back, you canreduce or eliminate the element of surprise. Suddensurprise contributes to accidents.2. Keep a good firm grip on the saw with both handswhen the engine is running. Place your right hand onthe rear handle and your left hand on the front handlewith your thumbs and fingers encircling the chainsawhandles. A firm grip together with a stiff left arm willhelp you maintain control of the saw if kick-backoccurs.3. Make sure that the area in which you are cutting is freefrom obstructions. Do not let the nose of the guide barcontact a log, branch, fence, or any other obstructionthat could be hit while you are operating the saw.4. Cut at high engine speeds. Always cut with the enginerunning at full speed. Fully squeeze the throttle triggerand maintain a steady cutting speed.5. Do not overreach or cut above chest height.6. Followthemanufacturer’ssharpeningandmaintenance instructions for the saw chain.7. Use only replacement bars and chains specified by themanufacturer or the equivalent.NOTE: Refer to “Operation” in this manual for informationon kick-back and how to avoid serious personal injury. If you experience any of the symptoms of this condition, immediately discontinue use and see your doctor aboutthese symptoms.SYMBOLSome of the following symbols may be used on thisproduct. Please study them and learn their meaning.Proper interpretation of these symbols will allow you tooperate the product better and safer.Indicates a potential personal injuryhazard. To reduce the risk of injury, user must readand understand operator’s manual beforeusing this product.Wear eye, hearing and head protectionwhen operating this equipment.Beware of chain saw kickback and avoidcontact with bar tip.WHITE FINGER RISKSHold and operate the saw properly withboth hands.Prolonged use of chainsaws expose operators to harmfulvibration that may lead to white finger risks. Symptomsinclude episodic blanching of fingers in response to cold, numbness and tingling. In extreme cases, it will cause lossof touch sensation.Anti-vibration system does not guarantee that you willnot suffer white finger risks. Operators should observetheir hands and fingers. If the above symptoms occur, operators should seek medical advice immediately. It has been reported that vibrations from hand-held toolsmay contribute to a condition called Raynaud’s Syndromein certain individuals. Symptoms may include tingling, numbness and blanching of the Fingers, usually apparentupon exposure to cold.Do not operate the saw using only onehand.Engines produce carbon monoxide whichis an odorless, deadly poison. Do notoperate in an enclosed area.Wear non-slip, heavy-duty protectivegloves when handling the chainsaw.3

English (Original Instructions)OPERATIONWARNINGFor your safety, study this entire manual before operatingthe saw. Pay particular attention to the precautions andinstructions listed in the operator’s manual.Kick-back occurs when the moving chain contactsan object at the upper portion of the tip of the guidebar or when the wood closes in and pinches the sawchain in the cut. Contact at the upper portion of the tipof the guide bar may cause the chain to dig into theobject and stop the chain for an instant. The result isa lightning-fast, reverse reaction which kicks the guidebar up and back towards the operator. If the saw chainis pinched along the top of the guide bar, the guide barcan be driven rapidly back towards the operator. Eitherof these reactions may cause you to lose control of thesaw, which could result in serious injury.WARNINGThe warnings and instructions in this section of theoperator’s manual are for your safety and to preventserious personal injury.UNDERSTANDINGDEVICESYOURCHAINSAWSAFETYLow kick-back saw chainA low-kick-back saw chain is a chain which has met thekickback performance requirements. The rakers (depth gauges) ahead of each cutter canminimise the force of a kick-back reaction by preventingthe cutters from digging in too deeply at the kick-backzone. Only use replacement chain that is equivalent tothe original chain or has been certified as a low kick-backchain.As saw chains are sharpened, they lose some of the lowkickback qualities and extra caution is required.Spiked bumperSee figure 1.The integral bumper spike may be used as a pivot whenmaking a cut.Guide barsGenerally, guide bars with small radius tips havesomewhat lower kick-back potentials.Chain brakeSee figure 3.Chain brakes are designed to quickly stop the chain fromrotating. When the chain brake lever/hand guard is pushedtowards the bar, the chain should stop immediately. Achain brake does not prevent kick-back. The chain brakeshould be cleaned and tested daily. Refer to “operation”later in this manual for additional information.(A) Run position(B) Brake positionDo not rely exclusively upon the safety devices built intoyour saw. As a chainsaw user, you should take severalsteps to keep your cutting jobs free from accident or injury.KICK-BACK PRECAUTIONSSee figure 4 - 5.Rotational kick-back occurs when the moving chaincontacts an object at the kick-back danger zone of theguide bar. The result is a lightning-fast, reverse reactionwhich kicks the guide bar up and back towards theoperator. This reaction can cause loss of control whichmay result in serious injury.WARNINGSkating - when the chainsaw fails to dig i
