Understanding our Edexcel GCSE grade boundariesThis document shows the grade boundaries for our Edexcel GCSE qualifications.For each set of grade boundaries, the maximum number of available marks isalso shown.For our Edexcel GCSE Mathematics A specification, the maximum mark and rawmark grade boundaries are shown for the overall qualification. This means thatthe grade boundaries are for the combined performance across the calculatorand non-calculator papers.For all other Edexcel GCSE subjects, the maximum mark and grade boundariesfor individual units are shown for both the raw and uniform (UMS) mark scales.Maximum marks and grade boundaries for the overall qualification (the ‘cashin’) are only shown in UMS marks.For the Speaking and Listening Endorsement for our Edexcel GCSEs in Englishand English Language, the maximum mark and grade boundaries are shown inraw marks. The endorsement is awarded a stand-alone grade and does notcontribute to the overall grade for the qualification.Definition of termsAll of our Edexcel GCSEs have a ‘raw’ mark grade boundary. A raw mark is theactual mark awarded by the teacher or examiner for an assessment. Raw markscores can be downloaded by Exams Officers from Edexcel Online.Most subjects also have a UMS grade boundary. The Uniform Mark Scale (UMS)was traditionally used to take into account variations in the difficulty ofassessments when calculating the overall grade for qualifications wherecomponents could be taken at different points throughout the course. This is nolonger possible for GCSEs, but the Certifying Statement of Provisional Results(results slip) will always show a UMS mark where the subject traditionally useduniform marks.You can find out more about raw and UMS marks at www.edexcel.com/results
